gregory - affectionately dubbed "greg" by emmaline - is a member of the dictyophorus spumans species, also known as the koppie foam grasshopper. the length of his body can be measured as four feet and three inches long, although it lacks the traditionally-spotted red stripes on his legs that can be seen on other members of his species. instead, he's primarily colored black, with bright blue marking each of his abdomen's segments - and has a rather small, lopsided blue star marking located on the bottom of his thorax.

he tends to like to appear wearing thin, wire-framed glasses, although because he has no ears, gregory has to rely on rather precariously letting the ends of the frames reside on the segment between his thorax and head, or appear wearing a sort of necklace or scarf that binds the ends of the glasses down. at this point in time, he's rather fond of scarves and bandannas, although emmaline has repeatedly tried discouraging him from wearing bandannas.

his exoskeleton is oddly smooth and thicker than average, as opposed to the rather bumpy surface that most of his species sports. however, like other koppie foam grasshoppers, he is capable of producing a toxic foam from his thorax from chemicals of the plants he consumes in his diet, such as milkweed.

he is a quieter, much lazier companion in comparison to emma, and prefers to stay quiet rather than speak, communicating briefly and succinctly if at all. he refers to himself as the "brains" of the two, and always seems to emit a knowledgeable and sensible aura, even when the things he suggests are the furthest from the adjectives described. greg likes to offer her sage but often puzzling or incoherent advice even when she doesn't ask, most of which sounds rather deep and philosophical but has no real meaning at its core.

however, the two do share an interest in other people and what they have to say, a deep loyalty, and an all-encompassing desire to do what they deem as morally right. gregory tends to view himself as a sort of mentor and guardian of emmaline, but also considers her to be his guardian and mentor at the same time.
