Alastor is a white-bellied muskdeer. Not that Ambrose knew of this until he was far older and able to read the books in the library. The muskdeer is larger than those of his species, being nearly the size of an elk, and his coat is of a smoky-gray color, with darker undertones. There's a white blaze on his forehead, set directly between his ivory horns which are about one-foot in length, elegantly carved, and stretch behind him in an arc. There's also some slight differences in his shape - his forelegs are longer, thus giving his form both the ability to bound and to run. Elegant cloven hooves are adorned with intricate carvings, though it seems those are mainly for decor. The underside of the deer is snowy white, and if one looks closely, the same intricate markings on his hooves are present on the white, in the faintest of grays. [break][break]
The deer's hide tends to change color depending on mood, turning from near cloud-white to storm gray. In very strange periods of time, his coat takes on a more golden hue, though this is only in moments of great courage or great happiness. Ambrose has often joked that Alastor's coat matches the sky in its tempestivity. His underbelly remains stark white, however. The deer has a sort of radiance to his fur and his clear gold eyes, attributing to the light element that he retains. One might notice that Alastor's fur smells of cedar, pine, and musk - all the smells of the forest.[break][break]
Other decorations consist of two pure gold bands at the base of his horns, which gleam in the proper light. A swathe of black cloth that resembles a large handkerchief is tied around his neck, its edges adorned with gold thread and peppered to look like stars in the sky. A gold tassel hangs at the centre, with other smaller charms - a clear crystal, several white feathers, and a small silver flower - adorning the small rope that connects it.[break][break]
Though it's not happened often, in times of battle, Alastor's outfit changes completely, to one of armor. An adorned helmet, black shoulder pads, and generally enough protection for himself to charge at enemies. This outfit, by contrast, is simpler, though the designs are no less ornate.[break][break]
Alastor himself is very much like Ambrose, and the two get along amicably. The buck is slightly more serious than Ambrose, more focused to on-hand tasks, and also very patient. Alastor's deep baritone is often a counsel to Ambrose in his decision making - the deer has very good instincts, and Ambrose has come to trust Alastor whole-heartedly. The muskdeer is also extremely sharp and intuitive, and has a knack for reading body language. He has a sense of humor, though it's often dark, and jokes the buck tends to make often fall flat. [break][break]
The deer can be stubborn as a mule, and his tastes can be extremely picky - Alastor sometimes expects the royal treatment, and he always demands respect before all else. He thinks little of the weak, and if there's something or someone he doesn't like, he will snub them or most likely ignore them. Alastor very much follows the rule of the wild - only the strong survive. Despite his selfish and rude tendencies, Alastor will offer at least a single chance to allow you to prove your worth, and he will wait patiently until he sees it.[break][break]
The two have a strong bond, and Ambrose trusts Alastor to be able to take care of himself, even if the two are separated for some reason. The buck can be a little vain, as shown by the delicate care he takes in his outfit, and also the general dislike for people riding his back. However, he's extremely cautious, tenacious, and will fight viciously if it depends on his survival. Alastor, same as Ambrose, will not go down without a fight.
