Roland Druune was a high-ranking mage of Leviathan. Not openly, of course, but to those who knew him, it was an unspoken understanding. He lived in a manor with his wife, Rebecca. Most of his manor was stuffed to the brim with old books of monsters, nightmares, and secrets. It was not advised that he adopt a month-old child, but he did. Roland and Rebecca gave their child the unusual name "Abris," no doubt for some unknowable, or at least unthinkable, reasoning.
Still, it's not like was a bad father. When Abris was younger, he gave what little time he had to playing with her. For a long period of time, he could sometimes be found pretending to be a horse, or a princess. As Abris got older, their time together shifted toward magic, riddles, and puzzles. Their relationship became a friendly competition to outsmart the other. These moments were rare, though, as Roland was usually busy.
It seemed almost a given that Abris would join her father in the ranks of Leviathan, but as the years went by, she came to resent her father's coven. While she loved riddles and secrets, there was always a grave seriousness about her father's work. He did things every day, that he couldn't tell her or mother about. What good was a secret if it was never found out? Abris could only watch as the coven slowly drew a wedge between her father and the rest her family.
Roland may have driven the decision that altered the rest of her life, but other people played a large influence as well. She loved to help her mother tend to the garden behind the manor. It was patient, quiet work, but the kind that instilled a sense of appreciation for little things. Abris's great aunt, Yvaine, would visit often. She was a veteran of a particularly brutal conflict, and she would tell Abris war stories for hours. Abris had a few childhood friends growing up. Even if she realized that she usually the weird one of the group, they respected her anyway. It was a gesture she promised to keep in mind as she moved forward.
