In this world, it is killed or be killed.[break][break]
That was the first lesson my father instilled within me while he still drew breath on this earth. At the time, I was under the impression that he was being his usual self. Untrusting and unwavering to back down from his ideas but also paranoid over something that would never come. My mother told me that my father couldn't function in society and the presence of other people would only serve to drive him mad. Because of that, nature was my friend and teh animals were my family.[break][break]
My father would busy himself with his studies while my mother would tend to her garden. Sometimes, we wouldn't speak to one another and I'd be left to my own devices unless given a task by my father. These 'tasks' were often objectives pertaining to his research. I was to venture into the forests and deliver items to him through a small slot in the door. To be fair, I couldn't remember the last time that my father sat down to eat a meal with my mother and I. And after some time, he refused to speak to either of us and instead communicated with notes.[break][break]
Around my tenth year, I noticed that we weren't alone. I'd suspected it before and used my father's tasks as a way to venture further and further into the wilderness. I saw so many things and wrote stories in my journals to document my observations. [break][break]
My mother always told me that I was the studious type. Head always in a book rather than looking at what was in front of me, and that is how I stumbled upon them.[break][break]
People who seemed so much like me but different at the same time. They lived in groups and seemed to operate on an egalitarian lifestyle where women and men shared their duties. It was much different than the life I'd seen at home where my mother took care of herself and I while my father remained reclusive.[break][break]
They didn't notice me in the beginning as I crept away as quickly as possible. However, when I returned over the course of the next few weeks, I found little things in the place where I observed. Sometimes it was meals like a skinned rabbit or a shiny object of some sort but they never approached me.[break][break]
They never approached me and yet they showed more kindness and familiarity than my own parents had. [break][break]
I didn't understand what my father meant until I received another task for him with a quote written on the backside of the paper. [break][break]
It said, "You are nothing and I am nothing.". [break][break]
I asked my mother about the quote's meaning but she seemed despondent at the time. Around then, I noticed that we had meals less frequently. My mother would spend hours in the living room gazing out of the window as if she was waiting for someone to return. I took the chance to explore on my own and when I became hungry, I'd hunt just as I'd practiced in the years before. [break][break]
Sometimes, I wish I hadn't left my home that day. Perhaps I could've stopped the events that were soon to come and halt the misery which would befall everyone who crossed my path. But I couldn't and I didn't.[break][break]
I'll save you the dramatics because from here on in, what happens belongs to another man.[break][break]
Therefore, all you need to know is this.[break][break]
You'll hear this occasionally from an instructor or word of mouth. That a young man died at the age of twenty-three, defending his comrades from monsters on the outskirts of Sundial. He fought valiantly but was eventually overwhelmed by his injuries and succumbed. That young man was survived by two out of his twelve comrades and is known as a martyr.[break][break]
His name is Lazarus Rietveld.
