There is something akin to admiration sparkling in Vera's eyes when Tony speaks of his family. Or, rather, of how he likes helping out by running errands for them. "That's so sweet of you," she says, as they make their way onto the next aisle and the next groceries in his list. She realizes that the lives they lived were very different, but the fact that he's shopping not because he finds it delightful, like she does, but because someone else at home isn't able to, sheds a whole new layer to the depths separating their lives.
Funny they would be shopping at the same place, though, wasn't it? Surely a matter of destiny.
"You're the responsible older brother, then," Vera muses. She wonders what that feels like. Being the youngest and only daughter out of four, she was used to being the one everyone doted on instead. "Your siblings must really look up to you. I know I would." The brunette did not know him well at all, but what little she'd learn from him so far was pretty admirable in her books.
Yes, she would be pretty proud of a brother who took the time to help her mom with their groceries—if her mom was still with them.
Eventually, she finds herself asking him about his opinion—Was anyone at home lactose intolerant? Did he prefer the taste of whole milk, low-fat milk, or filtered milk? And what about cheese?—before deciding on any one brand or presentation of each product. "Oh!" she says one time, grabbing two cans of milk rather than one, "I'll be needing one of these as well. Almost forgot."
As more and more lines were crossed off the crumpled piece of paper, so too is the mental list of ingredients Vera was there for. She's admittedly half-disappointed when the last item in Tony's list is finally crossed out, because she still has two or three things more in hers. Not to mention her chocolates! They never did get a chance to pass by those chocolates she so wanted.
"It was my pleasure, Tony," she answers, smiling back at him. She assumes that bright smile is directed at her, not dwelling on the idea that perhaps he's just happy to be rid of her. "I still have a couple of things to get, so I guess this is farewell?" She's not certain if he will want to keep her company for a few more minutes, if he even has time for it. He did sound like quite the busy person. "Unless you don't mind being a couple minutes late for your next rendezvous... Oh, it would be great if you could lead me to those bonbons, actually!"
Vera has no idea that was the worst way of selling her point.
I didn't know how to end this... It kinda went a little differently from what we were expecting LOL. Let me know if anything needs changed, though!
