Vani is excited. He is in full-size, unrestrained by Sundial's magic, and so he easily towers over Claire. He keeps flopping on his belly, then standing up, then pawing at the ground. His eyes are focused on the movements of the monsters half a kilometer from where they are standing. "Why can't we go there already? Let's trash them! They're basically asking for it, just look at their murderous gazes!" Vani whines, a complaint Claire shushes. "Quiet, Vani. The other one hasn't arrived yet. It would be easier when we're two in the game."
Vani huffs then, unconvinced. "But we're two! You and me!"
Claire just rolls her eyes and finished stretching. In preparation for the monster feast, Claire wears her dainty armor atop of her body, only protecting the vitals while being light enough for easy dodging. She has her short white hair down, her eyes intent and serious as she gazes at the monsters already pooling at their direction but never quite getting there.
Instead, they are stuck--kept at bay by an invisible force. That's the maze, Claire thinks. It's designed to keep the monsters at the actual site and prevent entry from the outside.
Vani and Claire is already resting at a relatively empty area on the ruins. The duo is already at the ruins, and Claire could tell from this distance that the area of the maze... actually looks more intact than the rest of the ancient city. The bunch of grueling, drooling, sabertoothed monsters easily the size of an average human with scales as hides and hooves as feet, is the only thing keeping the archaeologists from fully excavating the site.
Vani is alerted then of an approaching creature... "Creatures," Claire corrects, and she turns around to see a familiar mop of black hair and muscular build.
"Oh," Claire says, raising an eyebrow. "I didn't expect to see you here... What was your name again?"
"Maddox," Vani helpfully supplies his witch's moment of doubt.
"That's right, Maddison."

magical mazes and knight enchanters – the more he considers the job, the more he doesn’t like how it sounds. it isn’t that magical mazes daunt him ( the challenge is always appreciated ), but the thought of working with a knight, particularly one of significant rank and status and thus, and by definition of their alignment and loyalty very much his enemy, is one that is daunting, if not straight up abhorrent.
he finds himself making his way towards their meeting point nonetheless, persuading himself with every step that business is business, the bills are bills, and he really doesn't want to simply be a constant drain on aeris' resources without giving back anything in return.
they approach at a gentle lope, moosely easily spotting their mission partners for the night and beelining his way across open terrain. maddox is more concerned about the vague shadows in the distance. monsters, he knows, their shapes faded and curled in ways unnatural for normal wildlife; they move in motions odd and disjointed, even from this distance.
maddox offers raises a hand in greeting, a wan smile polite and uncertain. "that's, uh. maddox, actually," he pauses. frowns, shakes his head, and lifts a shoulder in a shrug. "or, whatever floats your boat, i guess."
he nods towards the creatures in the distance, nudging moosely closer as he raises a hand to meet an invisible barrier in the air. the aforementioned maze, then. "right. this is it, yeah? do you have any plan so far, or are we just winging it as we go along?"
Post by claire fermont on Apr 22, 2018 1:11:27 GMT
To be honest... it sounds the same to Claire. She can't quite grasp names correctly, it seems. It should be bothering her, instead she just shrugs her shoulders and calls it a day. Maddison it is. Vani is the only one affected by this, as he harrumphs in embarrassment for this witch.
Claire gazes at the monsters at the entrance. Further into the maze there are many more monsters lurking. They have a lot to worry about, that is sure. Claire scratches the tip of his nose. She sniffs, and makes a disgusted face. Enchantment is her magic, and that also means she is aware of how dangerous they are if placed correctly. That place is reeking of enchanted traps. She remembers the fated day of the wolf girl, and remembers how they utilized the enchantment to their aid. Perhaps they could also do it today... though.
"What's your magic?" Claire asks conventionally. As she waits for him to answer, she fishes out her little container of assorted pendants and pocket watches she got from the thrift store. She then pulls out two watches and sets the others aside. The Knight presses her thumb on the back of each watch, engraving a complicated snowflake pattern onto each. The symbol spreads through like frosted ice. Claire throws one watch to her partner. "Just in case we get separated. I reckon that maze is pretty big. It's a communication and tracking device. Don't lose it."
Claire puts the mana-marked watch at her satchel, and once again regards Maddox and his moose. She's not sure how two familiars of a larger size would fare into the maze, but oh well. "As for the plan... I don't know. Think we should defeat the monsters at the entrance first. As for the rest of the maze... I'm not sure."

"i'm a purifier," he says, lowering to observe as she pulls the watches out and enchants them with something yet unknown. he nods at the offer appreciatively and snatches the watch out of midair, turning it over in his hand to examine the symbols etched into it. begrudgingly, he admits, "this is pretty cool."
moosely paws the ground, dark eyes fixed on the monsters shrouded in unnatural mist. his head is lowered, poised for a charge on a moment's notice. for the most part, the moose always holds the opinion that charging straight into any situation is the only course of action at all times; to plan and wait is wholly unknown to him. maddox, on the other hand, could possibly be considered marginally better.
focusing on the air before him, he conjures up a detection spell to get a better gauge for the maze. it is overwhelming at first, and despite him bracing for it, maddox finds himself momentarily disoriented at the onset; he swivels around, eyes wide, trying to narrow down the scope of the spell until he is no longer being bombarded by information at every corner.
the air itself is saturated heavily with mana manipulation, layered with enchantments and illusions and other things he should have studied better. between the crumbling ruins and several invisible walls, to discern any details is trying to find a needle in a haystack. he can, however, feel more than he can see the barrier that keeps them from the monsters, or the monsters from them. "alright, sounds about as solid a plan as we're gonna get. whenever you're ready, i'll open a gap in the barrier and we can go on in."
Post by claire fermont on Apr 22, 2018 7:31:47 GMT
The mention of the affinity has Claire glancing at Maddox. A purifier... Claire stops herself from asking him right away if he could help with the training. But, she will keep it in mind.
Once the mana-marked item has been given and tucked away by the both of them, it's time to get to the mission. Claire watches as Maddox blanks out. Claire is concerned for about a second when she realizes that his familiar has not been reacting to any of it. It dawns on her that he is probably just working with his magic. It's unnerving to observe.
So that is purification, interesting.
Meanwhile Vani and Claire starts their preparations as well. Vani starts pawing at the ground with anticipation, while Claire psyches herself up for the upcoming battle. Once Maddox is done, Claire holds out her hand in front of him. "Stay still," she says, as she casts a reinforcing augment on him. He would feel invigorated and much stronger after the augment. She also does the same thing Vani. It kind of drains her, but it's better to safe than sorry... considering the amount of the monsters waiting for them. It would be a bloodbath. "Another precautionary measure. You're indestructible."
"All right, I think that's about it. Do your thing," Claire says. She then hops onto Vani, pulling his leash, ready to charge in at any moment. Vani rears and thumps at the ground, all too excited for this battle.
"I kind of want to take that monster out first. He's the ugliest of them all," Vani says, sniffing the air. The aforementioned monster struggles against the invisible barrier, perhaps sensing Vani's agitation. "All right, all right. I'm counting on you."

he doesn't quite dispel the scroll just yet, but lets it fade to a background hum, his focus drifting to claire as she begins to speak. there is a surge of energy, a rush of adrenaline, the air between them flashing vibrant with traces of mana manipulation as she casts the augment. he quirks an eyebrow and sits up a little straighter, gaze naturally inquisitive. what an interesting affinity. he makes a mental note to look into it at a later date. "that's useful," he remarks, experimentally stretching out his fingers. "indestructible is a nice word."
( in retrospect, the augment will do little to affect his modus operandi; maddox rothscus has a tendency to fight as though he were indestructible anyway, mortal fallibility be damned. )
moosely paces forwards a few steps, nudged onwards by maddox, until his antlers bump against the barrier itself, then he simply presses stubbornly against it and glares at the monsters beyond. the moose is picking out his next target, no doubt about it; the witch, at this point, is but a passenger dragged along for the ride.
there is a pause; maddox does not breathe; then he leans forward and lets his hands hover lightly above the invisible barrier. he feels for the threads of mana forming the barrier, eyes pale and blank, curls his fingers around the stubborn meshwork of ancient enchantments and pulls-
the barrier pulses, then the air before them shimmers slightly as it sighs and parts, just wide enough for the two of them to charge in side by side. snarls fill the air as the monsters whirl around, sensing a disturbance.
Post by claire fermont on Apr 22, 2018 13:03:09 GMT
Claire looks away with Maddox's compliment with smug satisfaction. She isn't used to compliments, but she does appreciate them. At the very least, she's glad to have helped. The Knight and the boar would wait patiently as Maddox yet again falls eerily silent, just staring across the invisible barrier. A tense heartbeat, two, three--
His words seems to spill the bucket of blood.
The invisible barrier shimmers until it is no more, and Claire apprehends the wideness of the new entry point. Vani does not hesitate and barges in straight ahead, head lowered, tusks angled, ready for the kill. Claire relaxes her hold on the leash. The ice beneath the boar's feet turns into ice and he skates forward until he barrels into the monster he's eyeing earlier.
His tusks pierce the wispy body, and he tears right through. The monster dissipates, without as much doing any damage to the boar. Claire meanwhile triples the strength of her right limb, closes her fist, and upon contact to a monster--she punches it right into its face.
Ah, it's so satisfying to see them disappear right before her eyes. At one instant Claire picks up a monster from its neck... and snaps the said part until her hand closes into a fist. Blood spurts into her hand, but it is easy. Claire notices that the monsters... are not exactly like the other. Though it might take a while before they could do a proper monster inventory.
Though can they even do it? It's looks like most of them would be disappearing even before they could take a closer look.
"This is the easy part," Claire says amidst the battle. "Very much like the portion of the maze's true horrors." Another snap, blood, and a surprisingly solid monster flung to the air, and Claire says, "I reckon that our real enemy are not the monsters inside the maze, but the maze itself."

it takes only a few words to shatter the silence of the mist-shrouded ruins. several things happen in quick succession: the barrier opens, claire and her familiar charge in, then moosely and maddox slip behind them hot on their heels. the hooves of the two familiars are loud enough for an entire cavalry -- it is an incessant wardrum beat that reverberates in his bones, and between the augment from before and the sudden shriek of monsters as the air becomes tinged with a familiar iron scent, he has never quite felt more alive.
the air behind him coalesces into wings, wispy and immaterial, sloping edges catching and distorting the light that filters through. the hoofbeats lighten, and they are not quite flying but they are close, whirling around the battlefield with unnatural speed; there is an axe suddenly in his hand and he drags this through the nearest monster to cleave it in half. momentum carries him forward. moosely kicks one square in the head with a sharp-edged cloven hoof. the monster staggers, stunned, and maddox leans down to sweep its head clean off its shoulders.
swing, slash, rinse and repeat. moosely trumpets a cry both triumphant and furious, spinning on his haunches to barrel into a monster with his head lowered and antlers forward. the creature snarls, struggles, finds itself inevitably scooped up by the moose's antlers and tossed into the air; maddox twists in his seat and raises the axe; the monster falls in two solid thumps behind them. tha-thump.
"sounds like it's gonna be quite a pain," maddox calls back over the din of the fighting. for another brief second, he calls back the magic previously cast and lets his gaze wander. his eyes are quick to focus this time, knife-steel grey and sharp sharp sharp. "there's another mass of magic interference further northwards, as soon as we're done with-" a monster leaps towards him, and he pauses to bat it away. moosely follows up the attack with a series of well-aimed kicks. "-this."

She seems to be in a trance, a bliss, and fighting seems completely natural to her. She weaves through the enemy without as much flinching, destroying whatever comes into contact with her. With no weapon to speak of, Claire grabs, punches, and swipes enemies all across while Vani charges and thrashes all around. This time the boar decides to just... run in a straight path. It works for Claire as well. A particularly lithe monster has the guts to jump up high and ambush Claire from above. Claire knocks it away, making sure to break some of its bones before Vani tramples it.
"HAH!" the boar exults, and Claire smiles wickedly. Amidst the battle she stretches her arms and shoulders, making sure to flex her joints. The sign of complacency seems to agitate the monsters, and Claire wouldn't have it any other way.
"There's an awful lot of them, though," Claire notes. "But most of them are weak." More keeps coming... And Claire and Vani continue to put their miserable existence to an end. Eventually, their numbers dwindle until there is only one huge wispy monster left.
The augments would all fade by this time. Claire pulls Vani's leash as they stand before the creature. She looks at Maddox and the moose... they should also be finished with their share of monsters around this time. Claire gazes at the monster, taking note of its size and wondering why it isn't attacking them.
Suddenly the creature shifts and backs away. It continues to do so until it reaches another invisible barrier... and melts right through it. The barrier sizzles visibly as the creature passes through.
"A one-way enchant," Claire says gravely. "I've seen that one. It would let the monsters pass, but not us." She then would look at Maddox, wondering what he has to say.

there are a lot of monsters, without a doubt. but compared to the ones he's faced on the mountainside with sirius, these are remarkably more fragile. they burst into wisps of shadow after a good hit or two, and if they do score any hits on him, he does not feel it just yet. the battlefield is bisected into two: one side is his, and the other is claire's. his gaze darts about, eager and rapid, always seeking a new target.
it is in battle that maddox and moosely work best in tandem, their disagreements minimal, the bicker never detracting from a simple mission of seeking and destroying. the air-crafted wings spin a halo of fractured light around them, the axe a devilish whirlwind that trails ink-dark monster blood in its path.
eventually, the horde slows to a stop, just as he feels the augment-granted strength slowly trickle away. there is an ache in his shoulder that slowly pulses, a sting on his cheek where a stray claw had caught him unawares, but nothing demands his attention just yet. instead, he looks to claire, then to their single remaining foe, a hulking form that lurks on the fringes of the barriers as he sees it. it does not approach, and that in itself puzzles him -- a glance at the knight tells him she isn't doing anything quite yet either, so he nudges moosely over to close the distance between them and contemplate the next course of action.
"do you think we should follow it?" in a maze like this, the walls exist to be broken down, yes? "i should be able to open this one too, if we want. unless, of course, you think we should find another way around."
if claire does not object, maddox moves forward, the axe dissipating as he concentrates on resetting the enchantment once more, just enough to break it so that they are able to pass through.
Post by claire fermont on Apr 28, 2018 15:29:01 GMT
Claire isn't too sure about being too straightforward in this. The monster's brooding is a telltale sign that it could be so much more dangerous than the horde of monsters the duo turned to dust a while ago. However she also agrees with Maddox that the only way is forward. He is ready to break the enchantment once more, as to remove the one-way entry.
She would freeze any other entrances (LARGE SPREAD) around the monster before Maddox does his magic. Again, the eeriely silent monster does not show any sign of agitation. It would be a pain if they would have to give it a cat and mouse chase across the vibrant maze, so at some point Claire is fine with that. She would then nod at the purifier, staying close to him as he once more tampers with the enchantment.
Maddox would succeed, and Claire grits her teeth. They are about to enter when suddenly, the find themselves unable to move. Claire's eyes widens as she takes in what's happening--it's too fast and smooth and quiet. Vani and Moosely would also find their legs wrapped in tendrils of their own shadows. Above them, the huge monster blocks the sun out as it swipes a clawed arm aimed at the witches.
Claire's right arm glows briefly as she pumps mana into it. A split second later, she dodges narrowly, then grips the the monster's wrist as to not reach Vani, Maddox, or Moosely. She then twists, making the monster yell it utter pain, and then with a powerful downward motion of her augmented arm--forcefully slams the monster's mangled hand and wrist into the ground.
Vani, meanwhile, trashes and shakes the tendrils off his body. They are surprisingly tough and sturdy, and holds so tight the leave red marks on the skin. Claire pries herself out, leaving her ankles stinging with pain.
"Stupid monster," Claire says disdainfully. But before she or Maddox could launch an offensive, their sights dim, and suddenly, they couldn't see.
Darkness.
'This is your first trial,' a voice would boom from all around. Tiny speckles of light suddenly flicker all around them. Five lights, at seemingly random locations. Nothing is making sense anymore... what is happening?'Choose correctly, and you shall be freed.'

if it were simply left to him, maddox likes to approach things in the simplest and most straightforward of ways. the maze that they are in, however, isn't quite the place for that. still, he cannot see any other way to progress other than going straight forward. so he does. he watches as claire seals off the potential exits, letting the axe in hand fade to mere air once more before he advances, palm against the barrier as the mana unravels.
but with his attention turned to the purification of the barrier, he notices the shadows too late -- they wrap around his legs, cold and unwelcome, just as they do with moosely. the moose trumpets a cry, furious and indignant. darkness falls across them, the silhouette of the monster outlined in dim sunlight. he braces for impact. it doesn't come.
instead, he sees claire reach out, her arm encased in a gauntlet of soft light, moving swift and ferocious as she grasps the monster and slams it to the ground effortlessly. he'd be lying if he said he wasn't incredibly impressed. "that was pretty damn cool," he ends up saying, the shadowy tendrils around him and moosely falling limp as he works another quick purification spell.
and again, the scene changes before they can proceed any further. one moment, he sees the maze stretched out before them, and then the next, he is blind, save for five dancing lights.
"what happens if we're wrong?" he muses, an eyebrow quirked. probably nothing good. then he shrugs, says brightly, "fuck it," and strides towards the middle light.

For the love of Merlin... The hoard of monsters from before pales in comparison to this grisly beast, who holds enough power to launch an offensive and at the same perform this witchcraft. It's more solid than the usual monsters, and it even possesses the intelligence to perform such feat. Claire can't even see Vani, not a wisp of Maddox's or Moosely's presence, just their voices.
Claire can only hear and feel and smell at this point of time, and she strains to hear the footsteps of the purifier. He seems to be going for the middle light... Claire, of course, follows. It may not be the right choice, but they won't get separated at this point. Claire scrambles behind Maddox, her ankles stinging from the vice grip before.
They walk and walk and walk... it seems forever--maybe even their sense of time is distorted by the void--until a booming laughter echoes all around them. Claire freezes, fear engulfing her chest, making it harder to breath.
"Excellent choice," says the booming voice. "But I didn't say get close to it."
Claire holds her breath for one millisecond... before she's swiping her arm in a wide arc and hurtling a sharp blade of ice towards the middle light. "Fiends like you aren't to be trusted," Claire spits. But before she blades touch the lights, they shimmer out of existence. But they could hear the blade hit something--a dull slicing of wispy monster flesh. Claire waits for the darkness to dissipate, but it remains, persistently, and that is only when Claire realizes they would have to deal with this monster without their sight.
The only thing they know now, is that Maddox made the right choice--middle. But what now?

for a moment, he takes a mental step back and evaluates his situation: surrounded by absolute darkness, striding towards a shining beacon of light. metaphorically, he can think of walking towards his own death, and he prays that this isn't the case. he cannot see his familiar, only feel his indignant presence in his mind, nor can he sense claire or vani. their voices float, disembodied, the sounds of footsteps strange in the dark.
for a long moment, they simply walk in silence. the darkness presses in somehow, and maddox finds himself straightening up, tensing as he continues forward. discomfort builds, until there is a laugh echoing throughout the void, the sound all-encompassing. he is no longer sure if the sound is truly something he hears, or the voice is inside his head. he does not like it. ( he does not breathe. )
the monster speaks, then, and maddox thinks that this is the most he has come to hate a voice he has only heard for so long. he feels, more than he sees, the flicker of mana as claire unleashes an attack, her voice sharp; he does the same. the wind howls into a frenzy, surges forward. it dies down abruptly and without ceremony, but not before the gale impacts something shortly after what he thinks to be a slice.
the darkness remains. ( he closes his eyes. opens them. no effect. )
"well," he says, voice tight and strained, "this sucks."
robbed temporarily of sight, he lets his senses drift, the detection spell taking hold once more. there is an opening, flickering and unsteady, some distance ahead. but even that seems to be odd and distorted. more clearly, he senses the presence of more creatures, slowly beginning to press closer on their flanks. he has no idea where claire is, but calls out nonetheless. "have you ever fought blind before?"
"there's a bunch more of the smaller monster types coming in, and maybe something like an opening up ahead. we can try and fight them, or sprint and beat them to the exit." he toes the ground beneath his feet; it seems solid, and identical to the one before. hopefully that meant that they had simply been temporarily blinded, and not wholly transported somewhere else. "your call."
Claire knows the ice blade hits something else. She could only hope it's the huge monster. The creature does not react to any of their attacks, instead silence envelopes the place except for a shudder of footsteps. Light, at first, and increasingly becoming louder. She blinks, but even she can only feel her body. Vani is out of sight (heh, touche) and she can't even sense Maddox's presence if not for his strong aura.
She tries to make sense of the direction Maddox's voice is coming from... and fails miserably at that. "No, I haven't," Claire replies. "And you?"
She hobbles forward, and stops abruptly. So more monsters this time? "If we attack we might hurt each other... I'm sure we would be unfazed, even if, but I'd like to refrain that from happening." The choice is simple. She takes a deep breath and swipes two blades in front before sprinting forward. "Run for it!"
It's just their sense of sight. Nothing major, it seems. They could easily survive this. The ground is still solid and they can still breathe. They are not restrained in any way, only their sight disappears, and Claire is sure they would get it back after they turn the hideous creature back to dusp, reduce him to a mere black, toxic whisp.
Claire can sense Vani following closely behind her. The boar pours on speed as he overtakes Claire, lowering his tusks and sending the hoarde of monsters in the air. It effectively clears Claire's path.
Claire runs. Stinging arise mysteriously in every part of the Knight's body, but even then she does not stop. A monster tacklez her and she staggers, catching herself on her knees. She then proceeds to augment her strength and throw the filthy creature off of her.
Then she keeps running.
So close, they are so close, she can feel it.
