this is Salem, a land filled with magic and maladies. It is a place where witches and their elemental familiars gather, a home to legend and
lore that predates time itself. Yet of all the wicked and wonderful stories the past can tell us of, the most magical are the ones yet to happen.
This is Salem - this is the start of your very own journey. Welcome to starfall
Starfall is an animaga witch roleplay set in mostly modern times. Members play as witches in a world plagued by monsters, where the only safe spots are walled cities. Starfall strives to be a character-driven roleplay with expansive lore and a highly interactive plotline. We want to allow members to
create and look back on a magical journey, and mold the site and its plot as their characters grow.
It’s a fine day, a beautiful day. The type of day with high blue skies and just the right amount of wind and sunshine - the type of day perfect for adventures. Or a mission.
Ling bounds into the Sun Cafe searching for a particular combination of dark hair and tan skin, breezing past the visitors lounging on the first floor and up to the true heart of Jester's Den. She waves at the fellow coven members she passes but doesn't stop to talk, focused on her goal. There's very nearly a skip in her step, all but humming as she walks - she's as cheerful s the day itself, and it shows.
Second floor, sitting at a table tinkering with something as is customary, she finds him. "Matteo!" Ling bounces over to the older witch, waving a scroll at him as she does so. "It's a beautiful day, and you need a break, let's go outside! I got us a mission."sorry for the wait! and the short starter. mission info here

Matteo's brows are knotted together as he stares at his newest piece of work - it's meant to help with measuring mana output, and though it's mainly for himself, he's certain it can help in the future. So far, it's been a bust - he needs a way to measure the different power levels of mana, which he's still not sure of. After all, it's not like mana is constantly trapped in a container - it's everywhere, in everything. This is something that's been a bit too advanced for him, and he's been struggling to make it on his own. So far, he's made up a simple container that measures litres - which doesn't quite work with mana. Nope, it doesn't work at all.[break][break] He tosses aside the machine in disgust (which really just means he leans back and stares at it after giving a loud 'tch'). Maybe some other day, in the future. Machines fail, after all. This one can just be a prototype. Or something. [break][break] He hears his name being called and turns to see a dark haired girl bound up to him. He gives her a smile and a wave after wiping his hand across his brow, streaking grime across his forehead. She's holding a scroll - he doesn't know what it is, but whatever it is, it's enough to make Ling happy. He wonders what she's about to share with him.[break][break] "A mission?" he says, a grin growing over his features. He glances at his failed work, then back up at Ling, making a quick decision. "Sounds great, lemme just pack." He quickly shoves his things into a bag, places it behind the counter (he knows the manager's fine with him keeping his stuff in the cafe, as long as it's not in the way), and steps up to Ling. He stretches and yawns - how many hours has he been sitting there? He doesn't remember, but he knows it was early morning when he went, and now the sun's bright in the sky.[break][break] "Okay. Let's go."
Matteo looks up and waves at her with a smile as she calls his name, and her own cheer brightens at his easy acquiescence and good mood. "Uh huh," she nods, wandering over and plopping herself on a nearby chair as the inventor starts packing up the bits and bobs and stuff littering his workbench. She starts rambling about the mission as she watches him. "It shouldn't be too hard, it's just finding 'n catching Mrs Heatherfield's cat again - I wonder how it keeps on escaping, really - but it can't have gotten too far, right? 'N we get to be outside, so it's a win-win!"
She jumps up as the older witch finishes packing, skipping ahead to the door as she continues talking - or perhaps more accurately, thinking out aloud. "Do you have any idea where to look first?" she asks. "I know he's been caught before at Amagika Park, but also at the Docks. Hopefully he won't have escaped to the Hovels right..."
Realising she's babbling and barely allowing Matteo the time to answer, Ling slows down and twirls her braid between her fingers in embarrassment. "Sorry, I'm just excited," she says sheepishly.

"Mrs. Heatherfield's cat? Again?" Matteo sighs with exasperation, though the smile is still wide on his features. "Sooner or later, I'm gonna start thinking that cat can do magic. But yes - let's go."[break][break] Leaving through the doorway, Ling starts off positive, listing out places they could go and check. Thoughtfully, Matteo waits until Ling's done before he speaks. "Don't be sorry, a little excitement never hurt anyone," he says. And indeed, he's glad for Ling's enthusiasm - it helps him take his mind off other things. And as the saying goes, laughter is infectious.[break][break] "We could try both of those places first - perhaps he's gone back. If he's not there, I guess we'll just have to wander until we find him." Matteo laughs at his next thought, and he gives reason for it quickly after - "Too bad I don't have a cat detector. It would've helped us a lot."[break][break] Ideas fire in his mind, and he turns to Ling, a light in his eyes. "Or is there a way you can runescript something to find him?" It would help them tremendously, and though he's not sure just how much Ling knows about runescripting, if there's even a slight chance that she could, it would cut down their search time by a lot. [break][break] It's not that Matteo minds if the job takes longer, nor that he'll be walking in the hot sun the entire time. He just prefers not to idle away if it means he can get another trinket to sell or fix.
Ling huffs a laugh at Matteo's exasperation. "At this point, I'm pretty sure it does," she says, shaking her head. The cat is pretty much urban legend in Jester's Den by now, escaping its owner with such frequency that almost every fledgling in the coven will end up taking the mission at some point. Sometimes, she wonders if the cat really is that much of an escapist genius, or if Mrs Heatherfield is actually deliberately letting him go for some unknown motive of hers. She's heard of far stranger happenings, after all.
The runescripter gifts Matteo with a bright smile when the older witch does scold her or look annoyed at her babbling - not that she expected him to, but still, it's nice; she bounces on the balls of her feet as he muses over their options. As he turns to her with a light in his eyes and a challenge for her runescripting, Ling stops to actually consider, a similar light sparking within her.
"Uh... I don't have anything specific, but I might be able to use the theory behind WITCH'S INTUITION and try creating an array centered around revealing the cat's location? It might not work though - for these kinds of things, generally I'd need something from the target to focus around. Still, I could always try." She tilts her head at Matteo, silently asking him for his opinion. In her own mind though, she's already thinking of the ideas and theories and potential arrays that such a problem has instigated. If they can finish the mission quickly, maybe she'd have enough time to hit the library later today...?

[attr="class","jarburnbbrp"]
Matteo laughs at Ling's quick comment, and it's an easy one, a light, shoulder-shaking sort of burble. It's true that the cat has gone missing far too often. He wonders if Mrs. Heatherfield truly wishes for her cat to be found, or whether she's letting it run away for some other purpose.[break][break] The secondary purpose being for fledgling to go and find it, he thinks with a snort.[break][break] Ling's idea doesn't sound like a bad one, and he smiles at her suggestion. "That sounds great! Let's give it a shot." He says 'let's', but he belatedly realizes that, actually, he's not doing a single goddamn thing to help. He reddens a bit but quickly continues with what he was going to say anyway. "It's too bad we don't have some fur or something, huh?" He wonders if they could possibly find Mrs. Heatherfield and ask for her cat's toys. Wouldn't that be a strange request, he muses with amusement.[break][break] "I suppose we could track Mrs Heatherfield down and possibly ask for one of her cat's possessions? Would that help?" He asks, glancing back at the dark-haired girl. He'll wait for her opinion - she's the one who'll be executing this new cat-radar endeavor after all.
I press the button and[break]it bursts into life[break]This time nothing will escape my sight
Her eyes light up at Matteo's suggestion, brain already beginning to run with what she could do with a focus. "You are a genius," she declares. "That would definitely help." Why had she not thought of simply asking Mrs Heatherfield for one of her cat's possessions? Or even a bit of fur? Fur would work better, being organically linked with the cat in question, but one of the cat's toys would work as well. Seriously, she is an idiot for not thinking outside the box.
"C'mon, let's go find Mrs Heatherfield," she says, already a few steps ahead and all but viabrating as the excitement of potential experiments and inventing sparks like electricity in her veins.
Thankfully for them, Mrs Heatherfield doesn't actually live that far from the Sun Cafe, residing only a few streets down in a cosy house that looks like it had been plucked straight from a storybook. She greets the pair with a welcoming smile and a plate of coincidently just-finished-baking cookies - sometimes, she seems so much like a storybook grandma that it's actually terrifying - and barely even blinks at Ling's strange request. "Here you go dear," she smiles as she passes the runescripter a hairbrush and a rather chewed on stuffed mouse, then turns to Matteo with a bag her cookies. "And this is for you, dear. You growing children must be hungry. Why, I remember my son being a bottomless pit when he was your age!"
"Thank you," Ling says quickly before the old lady can start reminiscing too much about her past. "We'll bring your cat back safely as fast as we can."

Matteo grins when Ling's face lights up and he does this weird little thing where he smooths back his hair and puffs out with pride. It's all an act, and it makes him feel foolish, but that's honestly all Matteo's about - having fun. "Damn right you are," he says with a laugh, unable to keep up the pretense.[break][break] He trails after her as they find their way towards Mrs. Heatherfield's house. The house is a little worn, quite obviously of the older generation's architecture, and though it's small, it seems cozy. Her garden is very pretty, even if it's simple and well-kept. Matteo spots a few weeds poking out amongst the daisies.[break][break] "Cookies!" Matteo exclaims when the kindly lady offers them a plate. He doesn't hesitate to take one, scarf it down, and grab another. Ling, on the other hand, inquires about their request, to which Mrs. Heatherfield goes to fetch a belonging of her cat's. She returns quickly with a toy mouse and hairbrush, after which she hands Matteo a bag of cookies which make him glow like a christmas tree. Not literally, of course.[break][break] "Thank you so very much, Mrs. Heatherfield," he says sincerely before they turn about to go and look for the cat. He sticks his hand into the bag and takes out another cookie.[break][break] "So for this runescripting thing...I guess you need open space to do this, huh? Let's find a more open spot so we're not just standing on Mrs. Heatherfield's lawn." Matteo glances around quickly before pointing to an area which is more open. It's a nearby park, though it seems deserted and void of people, with green grass and one tall tree by the hill. "How about there?"
I press the button and[break]it bursts into life[break]This time nothing will escape my sight
( Matteo seems to really like cookies. Ling files this information away for future reference. Or bribary. Maybe she could invest a little time into baking after this... )
"Eh, open space isn't really necessary," she shrugs as she follows her partner out of Mrs Heatherfield's lawn. "But it's very much appreciated." She's already reaching into her pockets for the paper and ink she carries around everywhere before they've even neared their destination, and she plonks down onto the floor with absolutely no thought for social graces as soon as she finds a halfway decent spot.
A thought suddenly occurs to her: the park is quite a pretty place, all thick green grass and rolling hills. She... should probably be careful not to blow anything up. Not that she'd do that on purpose, mind you. Or, at least, not to anywhere undeserving anyways.
But her caution is swept away as she begins quickly sketching out a basic pentagonal base as reflecting the mathematical representation of WITCH'S INTUITION, her eyes light up with an almost maniac glee. Experimentation - is there anything in the world more exhilarating, more exciting? Ah, but wait. She stops, looking down at her half-drawn array with a frown. She's... probably delving too deep into this, thinking too complicated - no one creates a new runic array just like that, excepting perhaps the masters, not without a lot more research than she's done for this. Which is to say, none.
If she continues with this array... with her luck, she'll probably end up blowing them up.
Biting her lip, she quickly runs through the runescript spells she does know well enough to adapt on the fly. Barriers, support, ansuz... And then she wants to hit herself over the head. Ansuz! Of course! The revealing rune. Slapping her hands over her face, Ling groans, "ugh, I'm such an idiot," before fishing out a new sheet of paper and flashing Matteo an apologetic look. "Sorry, just realised my first idea wouldn't work. But this shouldn't take long."
It's child's play to sketch out a containment base with to a central rune - it's like, one of the first practical things any runescripter learns - and she's done in about a minute. Modifying it to focus on the chewed up toy mouse takes a little longer. Channeling mana into her index finger, Ling traces out the newly-inked lines, picturing the cat and its location in her mind as she chants out the rune verse, "the river mouth is the aim of most journeys, / but a scabbard is the sword's." For things like this, better to craft a general array with results reliant on focus and intent than on a linguistically specific array.
A flash, a whisper across the back of her mind, then it fades like morning mist in the sun's warm rays. Ling blinks, slightly disorientated as the world shifts back into focus, toppling back down to a seated position from where she'd crouched. "Owwww," she groans, covering her eyes. "Note to self: focus the array better next time." But as her dizziness fades, she can't help the wide grin that breaks out over her face. "It worked!" She laughs in exhilaration, reaching out to hug Matteo in her glee. "It really worked! Well, not quite, I only narrowed it down to somewhere near Whiskers and Wands, but it worked!"

Matteo munches happily on his cookie as he leads Ling to the open area. He's curious about this whole Runescripting affair - as far as he knows, she's the only one who knows it. It's so cool that she's got this talent of her own, one with a name and everything. It leaves the slight bitter tinge as he's got nothing. Just his machines and his hands and his theories. He's not much use at all, is he?[break][break] But he watches, fascinated, the cookie in his hand nearly forgotten as Ling concentrates on her runes and her spells. She smiles, and Matteo knows that she's gotten a clue. He smiles back. [break][break]"Whiskers and Wands, huh?" Matteo notes, opening the bag of cookies and holding it out to Ling, offering her some. "Good work, Ling!" He returns her hug warmly, her excitement amplifying his own. "Let's head over there and find Mrs. Heatherfield's cat!"
I press the button and[break]it bursts into life[break]This time nothing will escape my sight
Matteo hugs really nice, she notes as she grins in celebratory glee. She accepts the cookie with enthusiasm - sugar is always welcome, but especially when she needs to replenish some energy - and beams up at her mission partner. "Let's do this!" she agrees, leaping to her feet-
-then regretting that decision immensely as her head throbs and her vision swims and she falls back onto the ground with a pained groan. "Owwwww," she whimpers, clutching her head as she waits for the dizziness to subside. It's so much worse than the first time - probably because there's a big difference between sitting up too quickly and jumping to her feet too quickly - but thankfully doesn't take too long for the black spots over her vision to abate. She's got to be more careful with intent-focused mental arrays from now on.
Climbing to her feet more slowly this time, Ling blinks carefully and smiles when the ground doesn't collapse under her feet again. "Ok, I got this," she tells Matteo. A few rapid blinks and a couple of steps later, she's satisfied that she'll be fine; a few more steps and she realises she has no idea what direction Whiskers and Wands is in relative to here.
"Uh-" she turns around to look sheepishly at her partner. "I don't know where Whiskers and Wands is from here," she admits. "I'm really really bad with directions."
