before cassidy wolfe leaves to go to university, her mother brandishes a sword she's often seen perched on top of the alter, blade sharpened, the hilt newly wrapped in a silk. her mother, as solemn as ever, murmurs this under a hushed voice, as if the walls had been listening to their conversation. she lays the sword horizontally, and presents it as a gift.

she does not know what it means, but she is certain that she will find out eventually.

she takes the blade from its wooden case and brandishes it out in front of her. cleaned and without imperfections. she pricks a finger on the edge and runs it down its length, drawing blood against metal. a fine red line stark against the brightest silver.

she hands it back to her mother, who, with the finesse of a master, plunges it back into the earth.
