If walking around doing nothing was boring, then standing around doing nothing was at least a million times worse. Asha felt downright stuffy in the ridiculous get up they were supposed to wear-- long, heavy cloaks as though they were some kind of master witches standing guard at a vault holding thousands on gold coins. Instead, they were fledglings assigned with guarding (if she had understood correctly) nothing, pretending to be some jacked witches wearing professional robes.[break][break]
It was practically midsummer, and if she didn't die of boredom she'd die of the heat. Her feet shuffled restlessly; she attempted to mess around with her breathing patterns to give her some form of entertainment. When that didn't work she began humming but found she'd forgotten every single song that had existed. Argh.[break][break]
She stole a glance at the person standing beside her-- he seemed either extremely serious or so lost in his own world that his eyes were seeing straight through the wall of the hallway. Maybe he was a statue? Asha was certain she hadn't seen him move. She frowned and her violet eyes moved to the actual statues-- grand creations of stone and marble.[break][break]
Transfiguration experts could probably make these things come to life, she realized, her heart filling with a sense of longing and dread all at once. The boy beside her stirred once and her eyes snapped back to him once again. She knew they weren't supposed to talk, but...[break][break]
"Psst." She called over to him. They were standing on either side of a larger than average door, but they weren't all the far away. "Hi there!" she tried her million dollar smile. "I'm Asha, and you are?"

It's supposed to be an easy mission; to stand in front of a vault wearing professional robes, and look important. It's boring, but Elijah reasons that it's what fledglings are supposed to do before getting a name for themselves. He supposes that it's better than putting themselves in a situation and being in over their heads about it.
It's Summer, and the relenting heat doesn't help his mood, but he has to finish this mission. He stares in front of him, thoughts drifting into space, ignoring the way the girls shuffles constantly. He rolls his shoulders back and sighs, relenting to his fate.
That is, until he hears the girl again. Elijah turns his head, eyes questioning. It must be important if she's trying to speak.
But she's just trying to socialize, and introduces herself with her name and an offering of his. "..." He huffs, somewhat irritated, and looks back into the wall, message clear. She can talk all she wants, but Elijah would much rather focus on the mission at the moment.

Did he just huff and ignore her? Of all the reactions she'd gotten that would have to be the worse. Her eyes narrowed as she glared at the man, but he seemed too busy staring holes into the wall. "Hello?" she asked angrily, wondering what the hell his deal was. [break][break]
Boredom made quick way for frustration and then to anger. "And they told me the Helios Knights were uptight," she said, mood turning sour as she went to glare holes in her own portion of the wall. Just who did the boy think he was? Her violet eyes rapidly scanned the hallway as a crowd of people pushed on by, ignoring them or casting them wary glances. [break][break]
"Well at least it's a nice spot to people-watch, right?" she tried, turning back again before rolling her eyes. Why did she have to get stuck with the weirdo. Asha looked to the statues that were, in some way, guarding the vault along with them. She tried to read the label, but found herself unable to decipher the runes. "Hello there," she proclaimed, staring at the statue's name tag with a frustrated face. "At least you'd give a pretty lady your name after she gives hers, right, Bjurnn Keelk."[break][break]
Probably not the best reading she'd ever done, but how else were you supposed to pronounce it?[break][break]
Post by elijah silverwood on Apr 10, 2017 6:36:30 GMT
He should've known that someone like her wouldn't give up even if she were ignored; that she would continue to talk anyways despite his silence. He sighs again, hoping that maybe that she'll stop if he tries hard enough.
"..."
Perhapss she's right? Vesuvia says, her voice prodding. He's not uptight...He's being serious. And he conveys these thoughts to his familiar. Far from it. I'm getting the mission done. He says, shifting around. If he were in his usually garb, he'd have rolled his shoulders back and straightened his jacket for emphasis.
The girl doesn't stop talking either--in fact, she turns to the statue next to her an pronounces her name in a completely wrong fashion. At this rate, it won't stop, and he wouldn't want her to desecrate such a high figure in history.
"It's Bjurnn Keelk." He says, stressing the right syllables and enunciation. He's done some research before partaking in this mission, and he would hate for such knowledge to go to waste. At this, he glances back at Ashe, looking down his nose at her.
"And before you ask, it's Elijah. If you're going to act crazy, at least do it with the right pronunciation."

"So you can speak," Asha snaps, turning her head immediately to see that he took the bait. Not exactly in the 'I'm sorry I was being a loser' way that she had hoped, but this would have to do. While years of talking to people had taught her that angry voices was not the fastest way to make friends, the idea of befriending this person had long since gone out of the window.
Oh no he didn't.
"Before I ask?" she said, her voice rising above the angry whisper of the dedicated guard and into something much more confrontational. "But I did ask you, like three minutes ago." His face is full of disdain, and she hears Polaris grumble in her mind, but ignores him for the most part.
Her eyes narrow harshly. "Or were you too busy ignoring me to hear?" Her arms are folded, and she's turned to face him semi-abandoning her post at the right side of the door. Let him be, Asha, Polaris said, lazily into her mind like he'd just woken up. I will not, she snapped right back, seconds before she heard the bear yawn.
She wasn't budging from her offensive stance until she heard a response from the boy.

As if he didn't hate this mission enough--Asha seemed to be one of those people who attracted trouble, no matter where they went. He rolls his eyes, making his disdain clear. Because he didn't have to like who he worked with, even if they were supposed to be 'partners'. It's not like he'll ever work with her again. In a town so big, it's easy to get pass by someone and never see them again.
At least, one could hope.
He huffs angrily, looking away to avoid his discontent. Eli's hard pressed to admit that he hadn't been listening--even though it was true. He'd been too busy in his own thoughts to remember that she'd even asked for his name. Embarrassing. He thinks, but pushes that thought to the back of his mind, behind all the other times he'd made a fool of himself, locked and shoved under a corner.
She'd moved from her post, turning to face him, arms folded angrily, as if she could intimidate him from such looks. He scoffs, slightly turning to face her. It is with contempt and annoyance when he turns to her, coupled with a side glare.
"It's a job, not a social event. I'd rather just get this over with."

That...positively didn't answer anything, but somehow changed Asha's tone and she looked at him with scrunched eyebrows and a sudden shift in attitude. "Yeah, not with that attitude." She felt like this guy was surely the type with either zero friends or an obsession with something so obscure you couldn't learn it if you wanted to. As much as the fact softened her reach, it did not change her stance or overall viewing of this person.[break][break]
"So you don't even want anything interesting to happen?" The boredom and mundanity that radiated off this person were enough to make Asha nauseous. Already it felt like she was going to be having a conversation against a brick, but she was determined to try.[break][break]
Everyone had something interesting about them, and Asha never considered herself the type to take no for an answer. It wasn't like the vault had anything in particular they had to pay attention too, and this mission was basically killing time. Right?[break][break]

For a moment, he thinks that his quip had finally shut her up--her eyes narrow, and she looks as displeased as he's been feeling this whole night. She may dislike him, but Eli doesn't care enough to do anything about it. No friends needed; what's important is the mission, and Eli seeks to do it with as little grief as possible.
Unfortunately, she doesn't stop. He scoffs at such questions, his eyes flicking up to the ceiling, annoyance clear. Interesting. Sure, if he wanted to fail the mission. It seems like Ashe can't accept such responsibility.
"That would risk the integrity of the mission." He states in a matter-of-fact tone. If people see the guards talking casually, that implies that the vault holds nothing important--and it doesn't, but people shouldn't know about it. Ashe jsut doesn't understand, and he wouldn't have expected someone like her to.

She didn't have any real way to counter that statement because it was true. Yet, how crazy did you have to be to take something like this with the severity of a eulogy? There seemed to be no way around this person, and so she had to slow down and think for a bit on how to approach them, the gears in her mind churning in an attempt to understand or reach out.[break][break]
"It doesn't have to be life threatening or majorly distracting to be interesting," she tried to reason with a softening voice --trying a more neutral approach instead of the more direct and abrasive one that had come to her mind mere minutes ago. She knew when to push and when to lean back, of course.[break][break]
Okay. Maybe he was serious because he wanted to be noticed and grow stronger as a witch? She could come up with something to say for that. "Of course I want something interesting to happen. Do you really want this to go through uneventful so you can keep doing uneventful things like this?"
[break][break] She'd keep shooting in the dark until she hit the right answer.

It seems like his logic has won over the conversation for once; she grows quiet, her voice softer and calmer. He supposes that she's not wrong; but there's a time and place for everything, isn't there? He doesn't think of himself as a boring person; the world is full of wonders he has yet to explore, but in such a mission, he doesn't seek for something interesting to happen.
Perhaps she just needs a little explaining. He shifts, feeling the heavy cloth move against his sweaty skin, unwilling to wilt under the heat, and looks in her direction. "Of course I'd like for something interesting to happen..." He says, lips twisting into a frown. "but if something happens in this mission...we fail."
He sighs. She's trying to reason with him, and he appreciates that, so he can reluctantly try to reason back. Elijah's not the best as appeasing people, but he shouldn't be. There's no use in trying to make everyone happy, much less a random stranger.
"I'll save the eventful moments for some other day."

Asha listened to him-- she was a great listener, it was just that this Elijah hadn't been doing much talking. He sounded a lot more reasonable and personable, and she seemed to settle in quietly as she listened, eyes moving to the hallways every once in a while [break][break]
She frowns at what this reveals about the boy. He's not boring, no that deduction had been somewhat off the mark. But he's a pessimist, and for Asha those two are somehow interconnected. Where was the fun in doubting everything? She never really understood. Ashanti counters his frown with a daring smile of her own. Maybe she was overanalyzing, but she'd take the risk (as always) of misunderstanding. Because that was the first step to understanding, so it was worth it.[break][break] "Do you doubt yourself that much?" she asked carefully, trying to keep her tone in between playful and accusing. She let the statement linger for as long as she thought it could, before hurriedly cutting off anything he had to say beyond a certain point with a huff. "Well, you shouldn't!" And just like that she spun angrily back to her post, looking into the hallway with her arms folded over her chest. [break][break] And then there was the sound of hurried, loud footsteps. And it grew louder and louder.

eye for an eye.
It seemed as if they'd found a medium. They're talking instead of arguing, and no longer are there glares--just reasonable glances devoid of anger. He supposes that talking isn't terrible, that people who pass couldn't care any less unless they really wanted something from that vault. He just doesn't like to talk. Or listen, for that matter.
He makes his own argument, using his own logic to counter hers. It should make sense, right? Elijah squints in confusion at her smile, wry and daring. He raises an eyebrow, wondering whether if he should even ask--because considering Ashe so far, he can tell that she's about to answer that very question.
And she does. In the most unexpected way.
Elijah reels slightly, head tilted to the side, face blank until he's left with only confusion. "I-I don't --" He stutters, before she suddenly spins, arms folded in her chest, hair rustling from the movement. To say that she's unpredictable is a gross understatement. He can't tell what she's going to say or do next, and that's somewhat off putting.
It's then that he hears loud footsteps, pattering against the marble that lined their hall. If this girl wanted something interesting, she'd gotten it--an obvious thief who had an arm curled around the stolen item. The victims had given chase, but they were far too behind to be able to do anything.
Elijah glances at the small of her back, wondering idly if she would live up to her words.
"There's something interesting. Are we going to do something about it?"

She wonders briefly if her deduction had much merit. Who else but a pessimist would assume that a distraction or an event meant a failed mission? She shakes off doubt without even shifting her stance- it's something she has a natural immunity to, it seems. If not self-doubt, though, she is starting to feel some of his perspective. And it's something worthy to be explored further. [break][break] But not right now. Right now she'll just keep quiet as she ponders the next-- [break][break] What was that? Violet eyes dart towards the edge of the hallway, seeing something come running up. [break][break] "There's something interesting. Are we going to do something about it?"
[break][break] But Asha isn't even listening. Well, her ears might be working but her mind is far from able to really translate words to meanings because she's already stepped away from the door and into the open hallway. The large, arching hallways of the newly constructed security company. [break][break] Oh, she's always wanted to do this. Asha smiles a childish, excited smile. "Freeze!" [break][break] Right behind her, a gigantic (albeit, slumbering) polar bear materializes, covered in semi-bronze armor and radiating a chill throughout the room. One of his eyes blinks open lazily and an ear offers a twitch, but it does not stir beyond that, instead preferring to watch from behind. [break][break] The ground before Asha freezes up-- and it's hardly more than a line or two of solid ice. It's nothing enough to cause serious injury. But unfortunately, the robber is running and only gaining momentum. He slides into the ice and crashes comically into the ground, rolling hard enough to make even Asha wince. [break][break] Caught in the sudden appearance of a polar bear and a puddle of ice, even some of the people in pursuit stumble (either forward or backward attempting to avoid the robber's fate). [break][break] Asha bites her lip, supposedly from embarrassment. [break][break] In reality, she's just holding a laugh back.

eye for an eye.
She's already starting to move before he gets a response, her gaze focused on the thief and only the thief. The corners of her mouth curl into a satisfying smile as she yells, her familiar materializing before her. Elijah's eyes widen in slight surprise. A giant white bear covered in armor. The mere presence of such a large animal makes the room colder, and Elijah nearly has to step back from how much space it takes up.
Before them the ground freezes, and the robber slides across the ice before he slips and falls forward, item making an arc in the air. He's far too slow to save it, but he reaches out a hand, fingertips brushing against the smooth glass texture before it shatters into many, many pieces. The few people around scream, and when he glances at her she's biting her lip, eyes twinkling despite looking somewhat embarassed.
Now or never. He thinks. Elijah moves from his place, standing in front of the robber--who's nursing a wrist on his hand. The ice is still slippery, so he doubts that the robber would make any other moves.
"Let me see." He says, kneeling next to him. Reluctant, the robber flips his hand over. Upon inspection Elijah can see that it's at least severely fractured if not broken; he sees no visible bone but it's malformed and starting to swell. They need to see a doctor.
"You should--" He starts, but it's then that the chasers had finally caught up, angry yells echoing in the tiny chamber. He takes an exasperated glance, hoping that the girl will step in and talk for them. Elijah sighs. It's his luck that he'll have to start cleaning up the mess, a situation he was trying to avoid in the first place, and he's already accepted it.

"What were you thinking, Asha?" Polaris asks, eyes lazily regarding the situation. Asha argues without thinking, exclaiming that she's made the right choice...until she hears the shattering of the glass and her eyes flash open. She sees Elijah's hand reached out, touching the air where it undoubtedly was. [break][break] Oh, no. [break][break] All sorts of emotions make her freeze up, from distress to panic to fear for herself and Elijah's position, to the overwhelming thought of where did I go so wrong? Polaris mumbles something behind her, frosty breath chilling the room further as the people approach. The polar bear's ice blue eyes dart to the people, and had he been a snake he would have hissed in displeasure. [break][break] They begin shouting at Asha. [break][break] "What have you done? How could you break it? How could you let this happen! Who do you think you are?" [break][break] Her twinkling eyes harden as she tries to sputter out a response. Was she supposed to have let the robber get away? She opens her mouth, but the words don't form. "I- I'm--That was---" No, she'd messed up. But in reality, what was better? A broken glass piece that could be magically restored-- or the same piece being stolen and lost forever? She wants to convey it but she's a mess. [break][break] Polaris, in the background, stirs slowly, eyes trained on the nuisances before him. [break][break] "I'll fix it!" she boldly declares, never mind the fact that transfiguration has never been her strong suit. [break][break] The people, to their credit, just look at her, completely confused.
