this is Salem, a land filled with magic and maladies. It is a place where witches and their elemental familiars gather, a home to legend and
lore that predates time itself. Yet of all the wicked and wonderful stories the past can tell us of, the most magical are the ones yet to happen.
This is Salem - this is the start of your very own journey. Welcome to starfall
Starfall is an animaga witch roleplay set in mostly modern times. Members play as witches in a world plagued by monsters, where the only safe spots are walled cities. Starfall strives to be a character-driven roleplay with expansive lore and a highly interactive plotline. We want to allow members to
create and look back on a magical journey, and mold the site and its plot as their characters grow.
He thought he was safe. That his nightmare was over. But it was only just beginning.
Sybil firstly smiled upon seeing the strange goo halt to a stop. The acidic substance no longer making its way towards them and instead solidifying, becoming a hard substance like a black metal. But then there were sounds, cracking sounds. The earth was splitting underneath the weight of this material, the centre of the park was the first to fall through. Earth tumbling into the abyss like it had never been there in the first place.
"Oh no." Sybil whispered, his hands gripping so tight around the branches that they were starting to cramp. Like an explosion, the earth fell from the inside and making its way to the edges. For a moment, Sybil thought the trees roots would suffice in supporting them.
Once again, he was wrong.
Barely unable to scream, he fell silently. His anxiety making it hard to breathe. What made it even more hard to breathe was this heavy feeling weighing down on him. And then, a pain shot through his body. Rocks scraping against his skin and tearing his clothes apart. Along his forehead was a nasty gash and his left shoulder was now covered in bruises.
The witch lay motionless on a ledge, opposite sides of the crater to evanora galestorm and other people he had never met before. For a few moments, he lay there motionless. After gathering himself, he'd let out a pained groan while he pushed himself up. The very sight of the darkness below made him lose balance slightly. Little legs would scramble towards the edge of the crater, his back pressed close against the stone wall. He was panicking.
Sybil tried to speak, let others know he was there. All he could let out was a measly whimper, like a stray dog kicked out in the rain. Then he saw Nora jump. Was it intended? He was unsure. But an instinct made him reach forwards. His arm outstretched as if he could grab her. Sybil wasn't exactly going to dive in after her, that would be silly. After all, it seemed someone else had grabbed hold of her wrist.
But the sudden jolt that Sybil made was enough to cause the loose earth he was sat on crumble. It was only a few rocks, he held his breath, hoping it would hold up. Then another few rocks. Sybil looked up at the others, his eyes wide with fear as he knew this wasn't going to hold. He tried to scream, but it was too late.
your group has failed the win condition of the previous round. because of this, evanora galestorm has died. they are no longer allowed to participate in the group event. (the sub event will be going up within 24hrs of this death.) [break][break] the previous win condition was a group effort. the condition was to climb up at least three ledges. my condolences, may you have more luck in the next round.

group a round 2
"You cannot write these [....] off as unsolved cases. This is the systematic slaughter of our citizens. And there will be justice."[break] -Brice Fervon, 168th leader of the Order of the Helios Knights[break][break] No warning is given. The rumbling of the earth resumes shortly after, the entire fissure like structure starts to sink into the darkness below, and the bottom sections are swallowed whole by the darkness. evanora galestorm slips into the chasm during the rumbling, and those that do not hold on tightly are likely to fall in after her. All around, they can feel the structure falling into the ground, coming closer and closer to the end. Yet the end of the canyon is nowhere in sight.[break][break]
The rumbling stops. Long moments crawl by. Nothing is heard from the lost members of their group. In place of the sounds of the groaning of the earth, there is cold and deathly silence.[break][break]
The bottom of the fissure that had seemed black then cracks open-- a single white slit at first, like the light at the end of the tunnel... But then the whole thing cracks open to reveal a gigantic eye staring at them from below. It looks like an average human eye with dark black irises but spans the whole of the ‘ground’ beneath them. Who knew the most terrifying could be the most every day?[break][break]
And then hands- ghostly white yet humanoid all the same, jut out from random points across the single eye. They race higher and higher until they come level with the characters and they attempt to grab and drag the players down.
Everyone was to scared to even attempt an answer to anything he had asked. Right now was time for action. Breath in... breath out. It was hero time. He could do this. He couldn't just be the damsal in distress and hope the others would be kind enough to save him. Not even Percy. He couldn't just put all that weight on the boy again. He had to help. He had too.
There was the boy on an unstable ledge. There was little he could do about that. He'd just have to hope it held long enough for the guy to move... well until the falling thing with him and the girl. He gasped audibly at that but they seemed to be working together at least to... well not fall to their death. The other boy near him wasn't so lucky. He could hear his heart pounding in his ears. It hurt so much. It was deafening. His body just moved on its own. He turned his body around, the small ledge he was on crumbling a little at his movement. He didn't have time to think. Only act.
His feet dug into the dirt and jumped. He could feel his body flying through the air as he reached his hand out, trying to grab Sybil's hand in the process. Honestly he wasn't sure how successful he would be. He reached for a ledge with his other hand. The strain on his arm from catching himself was unbearable. Honestly if he'd managed to grab sybil by some miracle his arm was probably torn out of its socket in pain. That was okay though. It would be worth the pain. He could be just for a second like Percy. Like that beautiful ball of sunshine with surprisingly soft lips and kind of rough fingers. He could be a hero to someone. Hopefully this didn't hinder them on the climb out... assuming this was still possible even.
"F***!" he shouted up towards the other people around himself. HIs arm was in pain. It hurt like someone was pulling on it constantly. If only he wasn't stronger this would have been easier. The freak is going on. His body was just screaming at him for doing so much. He had to do it though. He just had too.
Then came the strange eye and the white hands. F*** this was not good. They had to move. They had to move quick. Shiz things were not going well.
Sybil frantically flailed about, still unable to let out so much as a whisper. the attempt of Charani Petrov had failed. Sybil was no longer in arms reach. But suddenly, it was like a flash of light had enveloped his mind. The air around him felt like it had turned into syrup. He had... actually managed to use a spell? When he needed it! The pause scroll he had was finally being put to good use. But for how long exactly?
Not wanting to push his luck, he'd grab hold of the first thing that was near him. Something sharp and hard. A large jagged stone had cut deeply into his hand, flesh splitting open as blood instantly started to trickle down his arm.
At first, he was stunned into silence. He could only look up at the source of the pain. And then, a deafening scream. Tears were now rolling down his eyes, and to make matters worse. Evanora was nowhere to be seen. Had she also fallen when Sybil did? The poor boy was distraught, sobbing and wailing while his arm was felt like lava was flowing through his veins.
Feet scrambled against the edge of the crater, trying desperately to find a place to put his feet to stop his hand from being sliced up any further. Still crying like the baby that he is, he'd find a suitable enough place to wedge his foot in, and then used his other hand to grab another mound of earth sticking out.
There was quite a bit of distance between him and the top of the crater. And right now, he was in no position to sit around and wait for help. Sybil had to do something.
Of course, now was the perfect time for something else sinister to appear. Naturally. Earth started to shake again and Sybil had to hold on as tightly as ever, the cut becoming deeper and deeper. The darkness below them opened up like a door, revealing a large single eyeball staring up at them. These witches had fallen into its trap, and now, it was trying to bring them down even closer. Ghostly hands would shoot upwards, attempting to grip hold of Sybil as best as it could.
"E- Everyone! Climb!" Sybil would suddenly scream, the panic finally encouraging him to take action. His feet would occasionally kick out, sometimes kicking one of the strange hands. But they were quick, they kept trying to grab hold of him and pull him down. Sybil was still crying and screaming, absolutely terrified of this nightmare. He had to get out.
He had to..

The girl was gone. That isn't good. He missed the boy too but at least he'd managed to grab onto a ledge of some sort so it wasn't in total vain. Both the boys were alive thus far so that was a good sign for them at least. The arms were slowly rising up towards them and had already almost reached Sybil Chime by the time there was shouting to hurry up and get the heck outta there.
He had to climb. They all had to climb. He pulled himself up onto the ledge as best as he could. Honestly he wasn't going to be fast...especially not with that arm of his. He was certain he had sprained something or possibly even broken something with how much it hurt every time he reached out with it. You could hear him grunt with pain every time he was moving upwards. He was grabbing onto the rocks and trying desperately to move himself upwards.
His feet dug into the chasm walls as he reached for small crevices and rocks to propel himself upwards. If Sybil tried hard enough he could probably beat the boy to the top which wasn't a good sign. He felt a rock give way and felt himself dangle for a few seconds as he held on with one arm. F*** it hurt so bad. It was like his arm was on fire. He could feel pain shooting down his shoulder into his bicep. He had to keep going though.
"You can do this," he said to himself, barely staying ahead of those freaky white hands. He had to go faster. Be more agile. It wasn't working though as they nipped at his feet. He felt himself kick back towards them as they slowly started rising towards his level. He hadn't been that far down the chasm at least even after falling trying to save Sybil. If he'd been as far down as the other boy he probably wouldn't make it. Thank you for small victories. Just a few more feet and he'd be at the ledge. Climb mother effer climb!
Sometimes it's hard to learn from all your mistakes
Percy was twitching in the tree. He could feel his throat closing up, looked frantically at Cha for reassurance, he wasn't being very heroic now was he? But then the tree broke, crashed down into the pit.
The tree ripped from the fucking roots.
Percy felt his vision blur for a terrifying few moments, felt time stop as his blood rushed in his ears. He crashed down, down down, and managed to catch himself on a ledge by pure instinct. How he managed it he'd never know, never would figure it out except by pure fear and the will to live.
Then everything seemed to go wrong in a flash.
He seemed to finally pull himself together, assessed the situation and remembered all his minor training he'd done in preparation for moments like this. He bit his lip harshly, feeling the blood and pain in his arms and legs as he hung on a ledge, watching the people around him slipping and falling.
The girl fell into the chasm and his heart clenched.
He couldn't save her, but he could save the rest.
He flew into action, quickly summoning the one scroll technique he had that could help in this situation.
"Cha stay right there! I'll be right there don't try anymore heroics okay!?"
He watched everything in slow motion, and he knew he had to save this boy who jumped for the girl, who was in the most danger first. So he augmented himself, made himself stronger and more resilient. Turns out Augete: Claustra was super useful in this situation.
Then he let go.
He plummeted a good few yards toward the boy, then dug his fingers into the wall. He slid to a stop, leaving deep grooves in the rock, and panted with shaking arms. But he could do this, he could at least try.
"Let me help you."
Without waiting for a response, he grabbed the boy and began to help hauling him up faster, digging his feet into the rock and pushing the kid up further toward footholds and sections of rock jutting out. They seemed to be making headway somewhat at least, toward Cha specifically. Hopefully they could make headway further, toward the other boy too.
"Keep climbing!"
Part of him wondered.....
If he sacrificed himself, would they be satisfied?
He paused climbing for a moment, allowing one of the hands to grab hold of his leg. He had a pensive look on his face, fingers almost going lax....

ashes to ashes.
Evanora stares into the stranger's deep emerald eyes. She calls out to the void in her head, and when she pushes away from the rocks, she seeks to welcome its dark touch. For a moment, she's freefalling--but suddenly her shoulder nearly jolts out of its joint again, and she feels someone clutch at her wrist.
He screams in pain, and Evanora can't help but feel guilty for causing him such pain. He struggles to hold her from the ledge, and she can see more of the earth crumbling beneath him. And yet, the ledge holds, and she's surprisingly not dead. He pulls, and she snaps out of her awe. She reaches for the rock with her other hand, and settles herself on the ledge.
Why? He asks.
She can not give him an answer.
But she can be grateful.
"Thank you. I--" She starts before the earth behind her finally falls from under her. Rocks tumble into the abyss, and she soon follows, not making any effort to save herself. There's no more space. Her hands grip into the rocks before she tumbles. Fingers slicked in blood not her own, a slight smile on her lips, she looks around at the people around her before she finally releases the earth from her grasp.

and i won't feel a thing
reality is a lovely place, but i wouldn’t want to live there
pain like burning white knives lance through his arm, his shoulder, and he knows with the certainty of one having experienced this injury before that it will take a while to recover. but the blond haired woman is safe, and so, it is worth it. he struggles to even his breath, willing his racing heart to slow down, to calm from where it hammers against his sternum; 'why', he had asked, and he holds the blonde's gaze, willing her to answer.
"thank you," she says instead, and her eyes are blue and soft like the clearest skies; but no, that is not what he had asked-
without warning, the earth begins to tremble again, shuddering and screaming as it is twisted and crumbled into sienna dust; their ledge warps and shifts and breaks, disintegrating, fragmenting, collapsing under their combined weight. he is fine - kasimir is fine, pressed against the rock face in the most stable place was he is - but the blonde- the blonde witch looks to him with a expression of beautiful resignation, and he knows, he knows-
"i'm sorry," she says, and falls, and this time, he cannot catch her.
"no!" the cry is torn from his lips, uncharacteristic horror and denial spearing his lungs for this person he has only just met, for this witch he knows nothing of. but he could have saved her had he been faster, smarter, less idiotic and better at the magic that runs through his veins. his fingers dig deep into the stone of the wall, his expression twisting in a agony of furious sadness he had not known he could feel for a stranger; kasimir watches the glimmer of her pale hair disappear into the void with a cold finality that burrows into his very bones.
as if her demise had been the awaited sacrifice the inhuman deities above hungered for, the rumbling reverberations... stop. still. the air hangs heavy, heavy like lead, heavy like the scent of death; something awaits in the dark. the abyss grows eyes, grows old, grows hungry.
ghost white, long-fingered and inhuman, hands reach out from the monstrous eye, grasping, greedy, clawing for their souls. there is nowhere to run. nowhere to evade them. fire and fury like swollen summer thunderstorms roar in his blood - in his mind's eye, the image of the blond witch falling, vanishing, being swallowed by the endless abyss plays on repeat - he all but bares his teeth, arming himself with the wicked steel of his daggers and slashing at the attacking monstrosity with a vicious vindictiveness powered by the inferno in his soul.
( he has always been more proficient at physical fighting than the magic that is his birthright due to the experiences of his life, and today he puts that aptitude to full use, for once using his despised skills without a shred of reluctance )
a flash of silver through his blood-stained fingers, kasimir smiles in grim satisfaction as throws a dagger down towards the giant eye with all his strength. and the hand- the hand he turns back to with renewed fury, lashing out with his remaining dagger.
All he could do was go up. Which was incredibly difficult with the hands grabbing his ankles or tugging on his already torn clothing. For a moment, the witch thought that he was going to join Envanora, plummet towards that milky white eyeball staring up at them from below. Sybil was only going to cause more concern, he was the one slacking behind after all. All he was doing was putting himself through pain, and for what? Only to reach the top and fall? Sybil grit his teeth, relying on one strong hand wasn't going to get him anywhere.
Until...
"Let me help you."
It was the sun kissed blonde he had seen at the top of the park. Sybil wasn't sure if he was brave or stupid, but he wanted to help. That's all Sybil could ask for. This kid had some kind of boost in his strength which let him grab Sybil's weaker arm, picking up the speed. But Sybil was no rock climber, all he did was claw at the wall like he was some kind of insect, his fingernails bleeding and knees covered in cuts.
"Umf!" a hand grabbed Sybil around the neck, locking him in place as he gripped tightly onto whatever he could. Another one coiled around his mouth, trying to push him down from the top. Sybil, holding onto Perseus, would use his other arm to rip away the hand around his neck, and by opening his mouth, he'd chomp down on the other hand, releasing him from the ghastly grip.
"Qu- Quickly!" Sybil was still sobbing, almost his whole body was covered in cuts and bruises. "H - Help your friend!" he'd shout at the boy, slipping his hand free so he could help the other boy, it was obvious they knew each other. Now it was just Sybil, there was only a few more feet to go. If he was successful, he'd be able to climb up towards the edge and claw his way to the surface. It literally felt like he had climbed out of Hell.

your group completed the win condition of the previous round. no particular deaths have occurred, though injuries may occur/continue to occur at your own discretion. [break][break] the previous win condition was a group effort. the condition was to destroy at least three hands. congratulations, and good luck once again! you'll be needing it.

group a round 2
"Dreams in some sense, are about demand and supply. All desires are fulfilled within dreams, even ones that do not yet make their voices heard."[break] - Unknown, Untitled Grimoire [break][break]If you pay attention, you will realize that the hands have served their purpose as a distraction. On the wall behind them, you will see that dark red spheres have formed on the wall. They quickly start to blacken, the viscosity of blood increasing as the time goes by.[break][break]
They bear a sharp resemblance to the spheres you saw at the park. You remember that when the spheres turned black, they collapsed and left giant holes in it's wake, practically sentient in their decision to hover and destroy. The fissure is still collapsing, and the earth they stand on remains unstable. They've scaled a decent portion of the cliff -enough for the surface to be within their sights-, but the spheres have dotted the entirety of the wall. You can see the hints of red in these spheres, but you are running out of time. [break][break]
The eye calls to you from beneath, unblinking and ominous.
It was no use. Sybil couldn't find anywhere suitable enough to climb out of. But luckily, the hands were no longer trying to get them all. It was still too dark and hazy to make out if they were still here or not, but now, a new problem arises. Or was it a problem? He was unsure.
Small spheres were starting to form on the wall opposite to them. Of course the witches had their back to them, but if Sybil turned his head he could see it all clearly. Like iron cannonballs with flecks of red, resembling blood. In fact, they looked similar to that strange gooey substance at the beginning of this 'nightmare'.
As time went by, Sybil grew more and more anxious. It was like they're preparing for something. Ready to fire at them like bullets. If they didn't leave soon, this could end up being a gory mess.
"W- We need to get out! N- Now!" Sybil winced at the pain in his hand, but it was starting to fade, numb almost. Sybil was certain the pain was still there, but his mind was choosing to ignore it now.
The surface was in his grasp, he just had to get out! Tears rolling down his face, Sybil would once again try to climb out, avoiding any of the spheres as if they were acid. If he was successful, he'd be on the surface before anything else bad happened. If he did get to the top, he'd get as far away from the edge as possible. Everything was still collapsing. Sybil was starting to wonder if all their struggle was pointless...

They had to leave quickly. Every muscle, every bone, every nerve was screaming at him to get out. He had to get out. They all had to leave.
He had to climb. They all had to climb. He pulled himself upwards. His arm had pretty much gone numb from the strain, little pricks with each movement. It was better than the pain he felt earlier but it didn't seem to aid him in speed. He saw the other boy climb below him as that weird fluid came back. This was not good. Not good at all.
His feet dug into the chasm walls as he reached for small crevices and rocks to propel himself upwards. He had been closest to the top thanks to Percy rushing to aid Sybil. Even with this arm he had a better chance of getting out. He could see the ledge.
"I'll meet you up top," he yelled down to Percy and the other two boys. Percy could take care of himself. They'd make it out and get lots of kisses and maybe a smack for trying to be cool hero guy again. He had to go faster. Be more agile. He places his hand on the edge of the chasm. He could do this. Pull himself up. It hurt like hell but he could taste the ground. Could feel it in his very soul. With one fell swoop he was out. But were they ever really out? Who knew with this strange place.
In the process of this though he lost a shoe. In all the climbing hijinx it came loose and was currently falling towards that damn eye. Maybe it was justice for it to get a kick in the face... even if by accident. He liked those shoes too. Damn.
Sometimes it's hard to learn from all your mistakes
The more Sybil started to freak out, the more determined Percy felt. There was still two people in the chasm, still two people to save as he looked up and saw Cha pull himself free. He smiled, his shoulders sagging with relief for a moment before a tenseness and determination came back.
This kid was going to die if Percy didn't do something.
Percy took a deep breath and clambered up next to him, tapping his shoulder and looking him in the eye. There was a smile there, attempting to be comforting, and Percy grabbed him around the waist.
"I'm gonna get you out of here."
With no further words, he hauled the boy closer to him and began to climb, digging his augmented fingers and feet into the wall. He eyed the redhead, determined to come back for him, but shifting his grip on the boy in his arms first before heading the last few yards to the ledge.
"Okay Cha help him up if you can! I know you're arm is kind of awful right now so don't strain too much and both of you stay away from the ledge!!!"
Then he went freefalling again.
He managed to slide to a stop next to Kasi and grinned shakily, feeling his spell start to waver. He couldn't do this for much longer.
"Here to help, if you have any plans do them now please."
He reached forward and grabbed Kasi by the waist, and pulled him close.

and i won't feel a thing
reality is a lovely place, but i wouldn’t want to live there
his breath shatters like lightning shards down his oesophagus, biting and silver and sharp as broken glass. the grasping, ghost-like hands vanish under the unforgiving edge of his blades, melting back into the oblivion from which they had come, but the heartbeat after arrives with the realisation, cold as mid-winter ice, that they were but a distraction, a diversion from the sanguine pools forming inside the rock walls that tower over them on all sides. and he had fallen for it like a complete amateur, had given into the glacial rage of watching an innocent needlessly die and been blinded by his uncharacteristic bloodlust in that moment.
if only he could shake himself for his utter foolishness.
but there is no time for thoughts of what had been and what could have been; the rapidly darkening spheres are of almost the exact same composition as the lava that had so decimated the park, and he can only image the absolute lethality of what he infers will soon happen. he has to get out of the abyss. but not before attempting to buy some time - if he is to die either way, he may as well try.
mouth knitted in a hard, grim line, kasimir takes a slow, deep breath and starts pooling mana in his palms, gathering a focus and visualising a spell he cannot afford to miscast. he has cast this countless times before, knows it almost as well as the patterns of his own breathing - he can do this, even with the oddness of whatever is twisting the magic in the air currently.
an exhale, a realisation, and a shadowy clone of himself slides into existence. kasimir could cry with relief, if it were not for the completely unsuitable situation. he has not the time for such displays though; the clone hurries to the wall, scoops up as large a portion of the viscous substance as it can, then flings itself over the edge and spilling towards the centre of the monstrous eye.
kasimir, meanwhile, turns his attention to the wall and begins panning out how best to scale it - his fingertips are shredded and his shoulder is sending while-hot flickers of pain down his entire side, but he has been in worse situations before. he can make it.
and then... a blond haired boy slides down to land beside him, a witch he recognises from the branches of the tree before the earth had collapsed. ( had it only been a moment ago? it feels so much longer, a lifetime longer. ) he grins at kasimir, grabbing him by the wrist when he is too stunned to react, and says, "hurry, going up in t-minus 3."
it is foolishness, utter foolishness - why is the boy not climbing? kasimir wrenches his wrist from the blond's grasp, eyes flashing and a combination of fear and incredulity flashing through green irises. he has no wish to see another die today, and he refuses to be the cause of another demise. "are you insane?" he hisses, and shoves the blond towards the wall. "climb! do you want to die?"
without saying any more, kasimir wheels around and launches himself at the wall, scaling it as fast and as quick as he can manage around the bloody stains. if the boy will not listen to reason, perhaps he will act to save himself and act as any rational person would if kasimir takes away the possibility of 'assisting' himself.
Sometimes it's hard to learn from all your mistakes
The redhead pulled away and a slightly hysterical laugh bubbled from Percy's lips. Did he want to die? It escaped him before he could help himself, his lips parting in a reply that was entirely inappropriate for the situation.
"Sometimes yeah."
The muscles in his arms and legs burned, everywhere was starting to hurt and the spell was.....it was almost done.
"Can I just launch you up please? At this rate you won't make it up."
He scrambled up next to Kasi, peering at him curiously.
"Why are you refusing my help? You better hurry."
He eyed the balls and the clone still falling, thinking the idea was either stupid or clever, he couldn't decide. Either way the ledge was almost within reach, but he stayed behind the redhead in order to make sure he made it to the ledge. The moment those fingers clapsed the ledge and he saw Kasi start to pull himself up, the exhaustion crashed over him in a wave.
The spell broke.
He slid.
"Shit shit shit shit shit."
He cursed in two languages, speaking to himself in Varga to try and console himself. He squeezed his eyes shut as his limbs shook with strain. He rest his head against the stone wall and felt one tear squeeze out of his eyes, and sucked in a few shuddering breaths. The small footholds he was standing on weren't stable, he could feel that much, but the ledge was within sight, just a few yards up.
He looked up, felt his stomach bottom out, and tried to climb.
But his limbs wouldn't move.
He was locked in place, with no place to go up or down.
"Hey uh, Cha? I just kinda want you to know that I uh, I really really like you okay? Like I kinda wanna date you type of like. Just saying. U-uhm...."
