It's so cold, the winter chills me
that cool breath, clinging to me like a monster
'oh, my dearie, how are you faring? good?'
"i'm alright ma'am," your voice carries you as you look indifferent towards the older woman. she wasn't old, but old enough to be considered your grandmother.
the older woman took out her coin purse, and you simply shake your head. "my mother would have wanted you to have this for free, please take care ma'am."
you've done this before, giving a basket full of goodies away - but it's only towards people she knew who had lost someone recently, or someone who is celebrating the death of someone they so cherished.
she smiled at you and took the basket, you offered earlier if you could assist her, but she smiles tiredly at you. through the door and the chiming of the bell, she disappeared into the town. it's tough for some people, but you're not one of them. you haven't shed a tear since the death of your mother, and your father, well, he was elsewhere in the world. far away from here.
your employees work hard, and your customers enjoy the breath-taking smell of the freshly baked goods and the coffee. except, you hate the smell of coffee, and sometimes, you just wished you could take it off the menu for now. like that would ever happen, most of the coffee are signatures of the cafe.
moving away from your position at the cashier, you wave over one of your waiters to take the position.
putting on a white apron wrapped around your waist, you walk out with your hair tied into a bun. reading glasses and a pad with pen. jeong the lynx look up and rubs his head against your leg as you walk, you worry he's too affectionate.
"how are you ma'am?" you ask, this was someone who's unfamiliar. "ready to order or shall i explain our specials for today?"
Vera had heard about La Rue some time ago, now. She was certain she'd visited the cozy café sometime when she was smaller and sweeter and concerned more about playing than filling in her family's shoes. With her late mother, maybe? It was quite possible, considering the feeling that overwhelmed her as soon as she set foot inside—a feeling like coming back home. It was either that, or the place was just very well decorated to make her feel snug as a bug in a rug.
At any rate, she had heard about the café some time ago, but didn't get the chance to visit, busy as she was with her education. When she heard, later, that there was a new manager, she made sure to put it on top of her list of cafés to visit, but time and time again she got distracted. Not today. Today, at last, she was inside the establishment.
It smells good, comments her agouti familiar as she finds an empty table to sit in, and the fire elemental climbs up to rest comfortably on her lap. His rodent face peeks out from where he lies, alert.
A waitress approaches.
Both Vera's and her familiar's, Fondue's, ears perk up at the mention of the day's specials. No conversation between them is needed before deciding what they'd be ordering. "I'd love to hear about the specials," the brunette witch answers almost immediately. She was planning to ask for a bit of everything, really, but they could easily start with those specials.
"Oh, and by the way, Fondue here wants me to say that the smell of coffee in this shop is divine. He's sure to want a cup or three of latte." Vera nods at the figure resting on her lap, calmly, solemnly, as if she weren't about to tease him, before adding an extra "He's always had a soft spot for coffee beans, you see, which has bewildered the whole family ever since we found out. I mean, an agouti feeding on coffee beans, really?"
A small giggle escapes Vera's lips as the agouti complains in her mind and mentions the many desserts she downs on a daily basis and how she's sure to get fat. The sobriety she was striving for quickly evaporates. "Of course, we don't want him to drink too much coffee and become hyperactive, so he's to be served nothing stronger than latte. Not even cappuccino."
She turns to eye the other witch's lynx appreciatively. "I don't suppose yours is as picky as he is, am I right?"
YOUR POST IS LOVELY AND MINE IS SUBPAR. But there's dorky teasing, dorky everything.
it hasn't been that bad so far. and you were quite comfortable with the current situation. the air around her is much different than the others, and your guard goes all the way up. when you took over the cafe you knew that something had to happen. when you took ownership of the cafe, you weren't sure you were up to the task to run a business that has been in the family for many generations since you've always seemed to be by your lonesome looking out of your apartment window with a book in your hand and your familiar on your lap.
yet, here you are, taking orders from a customer and with the days you've been in charge, it's been pleasant. the customers are kind and always look for someone to talk to, so idly you take your time and sit to chat with them. you have no interest in their topic, and it passes the time when you want the world to end faster.
"our specials for drinks," like clockwork, you remember the different specials. "creamy toffee frappe is our specials. i recommend it if you have a sweet tooth, as it's with toffee sauce with Coffee frappe, topped with our home made whipped cream and butterscotch."
you're not a fan of coffee, it sticks too much to your clothes and the smell becomes repulsive after some time. "for our food, we have our cream roasted basil tomato soup to counteract the sweetness of the creamy toffee frappe. "
from sandwiches to drinks so sweet and unhealthy, you're extremely surprised most of the people in eclipse town are still fit. however, despite their appearances, you're interested in the girl. she looks young, perhaps late teens early adult. "a cup of coffee and a bag of chocolate covered coffee beans for the travel back home if you like."
jeong rubbed his face against your leg, looking up at you for a bit before jumping on your back and climbing up to your shoulder. the weight would be too much for an average person, however, you've grown accustomed to it too easily. "this one," as you point to your familiar. "loves to eat the buttered scones we serve, and sometimes would complain if the smell of coffee is stuck on his fur."
'hey, my fur is silk soft and i can prove to anyone that my fur is worth millions.'
if you ask me, i would have shaved you and sold you already to hire another staff.
'never mind, please ignore what i said.'
"is there anything else you would like other than your orders? at la rue we aim to help our customers as best as possible."
Vera's mouth was already watering at the mention of the drinks offered in La Rue. Whipped cream, butterscotch, a touch of coffee? And that tomato soup? It sounded heavenly, all of it. "Yes," she immediately declared, not even waiting for the waitress to finish. "I'll have everything you said, including the chocolate-covered coffee beans to go." She really couldn't wait to savor the delicacies already.
She was glad she'd finally taken the time to visit Eclipse Town, however long it had taken her to do so. She was glad to finally get to relish in these goodies.
Staring unabashedly at the lynx climb onto his witch's shoulder wasn't a planned course of action, for obvious reasons. It was pretty far from planned, or even expected. Vera was understandably surprised that the woman didn't crumble instantly at the feline's sheer weight. She's even more surprised that she doesn't seem to mind; she's so calm about the ordeal Vera would have been inclined to think it a common occurrence, had the thought not been so preposterous.
"I'm sure Fondue would love to rid your boy of any and all coffee he may find in his way," she laughs, despite everything. Maybe it really wasn't all that strange in Eclipse Town. Nobody else seemed to notice. She was in a strange town, with its own culture and customs—and, like they say, while in Rome, do as the Romans do. Hopefully that didn't include letting Fondue himself climb onto her back.
Vera is glad about the topic change bringing her back to what she truly wanted. The thought of carrying her familiar around wasn't one she was particularly comforted by. "Actually," she begins, "Do you have any sandwiches? A club sandwich, perhaps, or anything similar you could recommend?"
The young alchemist didn't want to be rude and tell the waitress how to run the business. Not until she'd tried both goodies, at least, in which case it would become constructive criticism and nor nagging complaints. But she thought that, no matter how thick and creamy the soup, it would hardly provide the consistency of a piece of chicken and bread.
your lips quiver just a bit, the thought of this young one telling her how to run her cafe. it was a start, however, it wasn't something you're not used to. some of the people in this town were particular with their foods, and you're no stranger to having those certain people request particulars to fill their stomach. written on your pad, you made sure to put in extra coffee beans in case they would prefer more than the standard ten.
"if you turn to the sandwiches, we have those too, i can always give you our chicken sandwich with tomato and lettuce if that is your preference?"
jeong leaned a bit forward and then back, your footing came abruptly as you fell backwards. eyes darting to your familiar, he quickly hid behind the customer. standing up, careful of your back. you give off a friendly smile.
"would that be all?"
+ Vera Lindt asdfareqw i changed temp again uvu;;; also this is short i cry
The young brunette's fingers leaf through the menu at the waitress' cue. Sure enough, there is a whole list of sandwiches to choose from, but Vera trusts the woman's judgement enough to let her choose the one to order. "Yes, please, that'd be lovely!"
Vera continues shifting through the pages distractedly, already picking out what she wants to try the next time she comes to the café. Realistically speaking, such an order would be comprised of perhaps two or three, maybe even four items, but she finds then that she really wants to try most of the menu.
Her musings are interrupted when she feels an unfamiliar presence behind her—the waitress' lynx. Smiling, she removes her unoccupied hand and reaches out to pet him. She's inches from coming into contact with the lynx's fur when she looks up at his witch and asks, "May I?"
She notices a strange look in the pale-haired witch's face when she looks up, but as she'd failed to notice the little stunt from just seconds ago, Vera is caught unaware about its origin. "Oh, I think that's all, yes. Is it okay if I keep the menu for a little while longer, though? I can always call you back if I think of anything else, right, um...?"
The untold question for the waitress' name hangs in the air.
if only the situation was a bit better than before. you're only in the right place of mind as jeong moves towards the woman's hand, wanting the attention and love. the affection he has been neglected for the past couple of days. knowing how he was acting, he rubbed his head against the woman's hand, liking how warm she was. "well, you should ask jeong if he wanted it," a smile came to your lips.
looking over the pad of paper with the order, you scribble down a few more notes before looking to her. "nike, the owner of the establishment, if you have any critiques for the cafe, please feel free to say and voice it out."
with that, you left, giving off the order by the kitchen and attend the other customers -- allowing the other waiter at the counter go back to their job. the lynx, already in tune to his desire jeong continued to adore the affection and likeness of vera. if only his owner was just as kind as her.
Vera smiles in response to the witch's own smile. "Jeong, huh?" she asks the lynx, happy to provide the attention he seeks. "I'm going to assume that means you don't mind, then," she says, laughing lightly at how he's already rubbing his head against her hand. "You've got a lovely nickname."
Surprise washes over her entire demeanor when she hears that Nike, the woman before her, is indeed the café's owner. Heat doesn't take its time to rise to her cheeks, and her mouth hangs open. "Y-you are? O-oh, oh my Merlin, I-I'm, um, I had no idea, I'm sorry!" Did she think she was already criticizing her business? Oh Merlin.
As soon as the first wave of surprise recedes, a new one of sheer admiration hits. "You're the owner, but you actually come and take your clients' orders like any other waitress," she voices out her thoughts, amazed. She's still not totally sure this is happening, and is waiting for someone to suddenly come out and announce she's just been pranked.
"You're amazing," she finally breathes out. It's honestly inspirational. "I-I mean, what you're doing is amazing," the brunette then corrects. She's certain that Jeong can feel the embarrassed heat that's overcome her from just her fingertips.

she wasn't amused, or even interested -- a whole lie.
"no, it's alright, i was told i don't look old enough to own a cafe," icy blues shone as she smirked. the girl is young, and despite her age, nike could let this pass. her surprised look was more than enough for nike to understand where she's coming from.
nike remembered her first time -- the way her mother told her that she soon would be the owner of la rue. she was excited and ecstatic from the idea of wearing all the cute clothing her parents provided her and help serve the customers. now? now it was simply a dream come true. her mother gave her ownership of the cafe, much like in its hay day, the cafe is always bustling. enriched with life.
broken from her fond memory, she plucked a chair from an unoccupied table and sat across from vera. jeong immediately jumped onto the woman's lap, purring loudly as he felt nike's fingers scratch behind his ear. "thank you for the compliment," she nodded just a bit.
"though, if i may ask, you seem to know about some basic necessities for cafe's, do you work in one?"
Vera was still blushing madly at the little display, but Nike's words comfort her. At least it didn't seem like she was offended or anything. She hoped so, very fervently, because of two reasons: 1) She'd hate to make such a bad impression so soon after arriving at a new town, and 2) This would mean she probably wouldn't be very welcome the next time she came over, and Vera did want to come over again to get a taste of literally everything else in the menu.
"I'm sorry," she repeats one more time, although already she's felt the atmosphere become a little lighter. Vera hadn't meant her blabbering to come out as a compliment, but if it did and the café's owner was flattered by it, then it was all the better for her situation. Even if Jeong abandoned her, and with him a bit of comforting warmth also left her.
She's shaking her head at Nike's question—Did she really seem knowledgeable about café matters? "I don't, no," she answers quickly. The brunette would have basked in learning she gave off such an impression, but right now she was too busy trying to stop Nike from hating her. "Um... my family is into the confectionery business, but we don't own any cafés, I'm afraid. Again, I'm really sorry if my actions reflected otherwise."
The young witch does hope Nike can see the sincerity in her words.
Before she can help herself, her tongue's already blabbering some more, "You do look very young, though! I really do think it amazing, to be this passionate and knowledgeable about own's business while being so young."
