Another day, another session of Advanced Potions, another period of failing to produce the required concoction. It was routine by now, a series of events that were slowly becoming monotonous in Vera's life. With one last formal "invitation" for them to practice the Vile Concoction again at home, many times if possible, and start reading up on the next potion stated in their syllabus, the professor dismissed the class.
Professor Hathaway was really, really nice. Too nice, under certain standards. At first, she'd actually been concerned about Vera's successive failures in her class. Eventually, though, even she gave up. Now, she didn't even bother to stare meaningfully at Vera when she made the mistake of brewing a potion counterclockwise when she was supposed to stir twice counterclockwise and once clockwise.
The brunette witch sighed. A mixture of relief that the torturous class was finally over and disappointment in herself filled her small world, dulled its colors and almost turned it grayscale. Gryffin had recently taught her the French expression la vie en rose. Vera wondered if there was a counterpart for gray: la vie en gris, perhaps?
She was almost tempted to accept this fate and roll with it, but that she could not do. She could not give in; too many things depended on her success as an alchemist.
Spotting Cyril from amongst the retreating alchemy students was no easy feat. Despite his outstanding grades, the boy seemed quite skilled at avoiding people's glances. If Vera didn't know better, she'd have thought his affinity to be illusion, rather than alchemy. But there he was—at long last. Vera closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and walked up to him with all the resolve of a young witch failing her classes.
"Cyril Björk," she called from across the lecture hall's table. "My good pal Cyril," she repeated, even though she'd never talked to him beyond a few polite lines between classes. Had she thought this over better, Vera would have realized that addressing him this way so suddenly was sure to scare the poor boy. Alas, she hadn't. "How did you find today's class?"
