her entire life, leonis has always been about being one step ahead. school, work, sports; if you could name it, she excelled in it. perhaps it was the influence of society, the ceaseless existential fear of being forgotten, of dying unknown. perhaps it was her parents, names and achievements and personifications of triumph to a young leonis' eyes. but they weren't warmth, and they certainly weren't home. nonetheless--that is an aside, and unimportant. where was i? ah, yes. leonis and her ascendency. but success can breed boredom as it quickly becomes the same drudgery each day, and that boredom can feed an anxious thought, a noxious tendril burrowing in the back of her head saying "you are not enough, leonis. why are you not enough?".

so, that thought festers, and leonis strives. first middle-school drama, then high-school swimming, her room draped with awards that were never quite adequate. and now she turns her face to magic, chasing rumours of ancestors past who were skilled in the art of witchcraft. if they were great, why not her?
