this is Salem, a land filled with magic and maladies. It is a place where witches and their elemental familiars gather, a home to legend and
lore that predates time itself. Yet of all the wicked and wonderful stories the past can tell us of, the most magical are the ones yet to happen.
This is Salem - this is the start of your very own journey. Welcome to starfall
Starfall is an animaga witch roleplay set in mostly modern times. Members play as witches in a world plagued by monsters, where the only safe spots are walled cities. Starfall strives to be a character-driven roleplay with expansive lore and a highly interactive plotline. We want to allow members to
create and look back on a magical journey, and mold the site and its plot as their characters grow.
Taking a break was like pulling teeth with Valencia and she wasn't very happy at it either way. However, she couldn't deny that the amount of time that she spent researching and studying was beginning to take a toll on her. It didn't show on her face but some of her movements were becoming clumsier. Everything that she did had a certain precision to it because excess movements only lead to expending energy that she couldn't waste. Therefore, when she accidentally fumbled with making her coffee in the morning and spilled a bit of sugar on her rug, she was a little more than disappointed.
Arion implored her to take a break even if it was going somewhere new to study. Perhaps that's how she found herself in Sun Cafe among the smell of coffee beans and assorted snacks. Her fingers drummed against her thigh as she leaned back in her chair. There was a certain allure to the cafe. Although it was rather large, it had a cozy atmosphere and saying that it was lively would've been an understatement. Jester's Den knew how to make someone feel quite at home and everyone seemed well taken care of among their ranks.
Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad to take a break.
Well, that was until footsteps approached her and a voice interrupted her as she raised her tea cup to take a sip.

Tony could sure use some pick-me up right about now. After an early morning jog, followed by a grueling task of moving a lot of heavy boxes from one place to another, he felt sore, tired and hungry. And the day wasn't even half-over. Worse, he had another mission coming along later this afternoon, so he only had a few hours to rest up and gather all of his energy back before he had to work again.
On the bright side, he got paid a considerable amount for all the work he did so far. It wasn't something to drool over, but every penny counts so they say.
He dragged his heavy legs across the floor towards Sun Cafe. They trembled and wobbled slightly, muscles screaming in pain, but he held on and eventually reached the establishment. The scent of coffee reached his nose, and he took a deep breath, sighing as he thought of how good it would be to have a cup right about now. Hopefully Matteo was there to give him some free food and drink to help make his day a bit better.
As always the cafe was filled with a lot of patrons, most of which were no doubt from Jester's Den. A brief glance around revealed no sign of his tinkering friend. His table at the corner of the room was empty of any kind of papers or tools. Tony was this close to whimpering at the thought of not getting free food.
Shaking his head, he entered further. Maybe he was at the back, working on something. He picked the first person he set his eyes on - a beautiful and elegant red haired woman who was about to drink from her cup - and approached with a friendly smile on his face.
"Excuse me, do you happen to know someone named Matteo Garcia? This tall, brown hair, kinda scruffy looking. Usually has some kind of tool or gear on him and is often covered in dirt or grease."
She couldn't say that the interruption was unwarranted as many patrons in Sun Cafe were akin to striking conversation. However, having the air of someone who was unapproachable led to a rarity of impromptu social interaction. Valencia looked to the cup of tea in her hand as her newfound companion asked her about a 'Matteo Garcia'. Even though she wasn't inclined to answer his questions and could've bid him away by ignoring his plea, she wracked her brain for any image of the individual in question. None came to mind but her interest was piqued when she looked to the stranger.
He seemed tired although she'd assume that was an understatement. To be fair, she hadn't been paying attention when he approached her which was an oversight on her part. Having an interest in her surroundings was one of the lessons that her mother taught, she'd be ashamed to know that it had gone unheeded. Nonetheless he couldn't have been a danger to her in such a crowded area and she wouldn't let him anywhere near her drink without her knowledge.
Indulging in a bit of conversation wouldn't kill her, she thought. Especially if she had nothing else to do and nowhere else to go for the time being.
"I do not," she said with finality in her tone. "And who do I owe the pleasure of speaking to?"
She set her tea cup down whilst trying to make as little noise as possible.
"You seem tired, and if this Matteo Garcia isn't here, you must not have anyone else to speak to. Feel free to sit with me if you'd like."
Of course, she'd keep a close eye on him but if anything it wouldn't hurt to be a bit hospitable.

If it wasn't for the pretty lady he was talking to right now, Tony would've groaned and sank to the ground in ugly despair. His only hope for a free meal wasn't here, so he either had to spend money for something to eat and drink - and use what amount he'd earned today through his blood, sweat and tears? no way! - or leave the cafe. He'd have to look elsewhere for a place to rest. There was always his home, but with all his siblings there and his parents no doubt planning to ask him to do errands, it was the last place he'd pick. Only when there was absolutely no choice in the matter.
Scratching his head as he thought about what to do next, he nearly missed the woman's question. Tony blinked, then smiled as he made a short bow in greeting. His legs were still throbbing, but he wasn't about to waste a chance to make an impression. "How rude of me! Anthony Skies, at your service. Though I prefer Tony. And how should I address the fair, glowing beauty before me?"
After introductions have passed, he would blink at her observation and at her invitation for him to sit down with her. "I..." The woman was having a cup of tea, so she wasn't being a loiterer. If he accompanied her but didn't buy anything, then it wouldn't look as though he was staying there to simply take a rest - even though that was precisely what he planned to do.
Still, being invited out of the blue was odd - for him in particular. Usually he was the one to initiate any kind of friendly conversation. Tony began wondering if there was some kind of prank afoot, or if the woman had some ulterior motive to asking him along.
"You are uncharacteristically depressing to hear." Loki's voice entered his mind. "Isn't this what you'd call an opportunity of a lifetime? Take it then."
With a shrug, he pulled back a chair and sat down - careful not to collapse on it.
Her newfound company bowed and introduced himself which brought a little smile to her lips. He made such a show out of it that it could've been a little cute. Nonetheless, once he rose again, the smile was gone and she was occupied with taking in his attire. He seemed rather tired and conflicted about her invitation sit but eventually resigned himself to taking the seat across from her.
There wasn't much that Valencia could offer in the form of an apology for not being able to provide him with information about his contact. However, the least she could do was provide him with a meal and a chance to sit down. Even if he was going to be a bit of a problem, in his current state it could've been hard to do anything. Especially that show of a greeting that he had given to her. Valencia picked up her spoon and began to stir her tea while she kept an eye on him.
Arion muttered that she should at least try to make some conversation since she offered for him to sit down. But her mind was focused on the amount of money which would be used up to provide food for two rather than one.
"My name is Valencia Godfrey," she stated. "It's a pleasure to meet you Anthony."
With that being said, she ushered for one of the cafe workers to come towards them. It would take a moment as there were other patrons to attend to but she was satisfied with the quality of care in the Sun Cafe. Raising her cup to her lips, she took a sip and then set it down.
"So, if you don't mind me asking, would you prefer coffee or tea?"
She tilted her head to the side, one of her hands resting on the table while the other sat comfortably on her lap. Her mother told her that the character of a man could be discerned from the way they drank their coffee or tea. It was something she didn't believe in but it was an amusing thought for hte situation. Arion huffed in the back of her mind and seemed to be appeased at her attempt to be a little hospitable.
Baby steps, she reminded him. One step at a time kept someone from losing an eye.

He looked at the red haired beauty with a confident smile on his face, working not to show his exhaustion. But when she revealed her name, he couldn't help but widen his eyes and lean forward on the table. "Godfrey?! You don't mean - the Godfreys? That family of famous, powerful witches?"
The surprise wasn't just all about her family's reputation of course. His luck had already thrown him in Cain Godfrey's path. And now here was a relative of his. Given his conversation with the 'black sheep' before, he didn't think it would be a good idea to mention this to Valencia.
"Wow, it's an honor to know someone of your calibre. The pleasure's definitely all mine."
As she started to call for a staff, Tony's paranoia started planting ideas in his mind. But before he could think about running away, she turned to him with a question. In his panic, he answered honestly.
"Coffee! Wait what? I don't - you don't have to..." Her offer of free food was too tempting to resist. At the same time, he didn't want to look desperate or plebian in front of her - even though he really was.
Tony lifted his hand up and shook his head. "I really appreciate the offer, but as you said - I'm not really in the mood for anything in my stomach at the moment." He could hear his heart crying out from what he just said.
Valencia was accustomed to the reactions from hearing her family's name. The Godfreys were a fearful bunch who inspired or shook their fellow witches to the core. However, she couldn't help but wonder nowadays if the reaction was simply out of reverence for her family's feats or out of the actions of a certain missing person. Nonetheless she wouldn't let her speculations ruin their meeting and if fate proved to be in her favor she'd have a chance to ask him later.
A little smile formed as he leaned close to her and asked for confirmation. In reply, Valencia lifted her cup and took another sip. The sweetness and warmth from her favorite tea filled her and did wonders on her mood. Even Arion seemed to be pleased with the pace in which she was taking the conversation. But there were more pressing matters at hand, like the state to which he preferred his coffee or tea.
And yet to her surprise, he seemed to refuse her offer out of concern for himself. But as she gave him a quick glance, she wondered whether it was out of bravado or because he was telling the truth.
"Well, I'm sorry to hear that but I would rather not be an insufficient host by partaking in a meal while you're empty-handed."
The small smile return as she set her tea cup down and looked to the approaching staff member.
"I'll have a slice of strawberry cake if you please," she said. "My companion, Mister Skies, can order for himself."
She looked to Anthony with a quirked brow, the little smile on her lips never fading. But if someone knew her rather well, they'd liken her expression to a cat that caught the canary.

Valencia's insistence flustered Tony as she turned her gaze to the staff and ordered a cake. He leaned away from the other as she told the waiter to take his order. "Host? But you're not - I mean, I suppose you are the 'host' on this table," He airquoted the word host as he spoke. "But you don't - you can't - " Biting back on his words, he shook his head and glanced up at the waiter pleadingly.
It was probably too late to get back up and leave. Here he was, completely out of his depth, trying so hard not to offend Valencia. The only other woman who's ever been this forceful on him was his mother. He was not prepared for this so early in the morning!
Now more than ever he suspected some nefarious goals afoot. No one sane would insist on giving another person free food for no reason. Tony couldn't fathom it. Rich folks probably didn't feel any need to save money, but they wouldn't just pay for someone else's order out of the blue.
The man stared at him blankly in response, patiently waiting for him to speak. Looking from him to Valencia, Tony slumped his shoulders as he lifted a finger up. "I'll have a cup of coffee please." If it turned out he had to pay for his own order, he was making sure to pick out the cheapest thing on the menu.
After taking their orders, their server left him to face the tigress alone. Tony glanced back up at Valencia, laughing nervously. "I, uh, thanks. Hahaha...so, you come here often?" With nothing better to do, he clasped his hands together on the table.
Loki was curled up underneath the chair, his loud mental chuckles reaching Tony.
Although she'd never want to enforce her own will and status on someone else, Valencia knew what a person on their last leg looked like. Partially because she was often that person who was trying to stand upright even when they weren't able to keep going. Arion had to be pushy and forceful to get her to see that she was pushing herself too hard. And she wasn't very sure about this Anthony Skies, but she'd rather that he didn't keel over if she could do something to stop it in advance.
A little smile formed as she took another sip from her cup while he ordered coffee. Maybe he was being cautious or maybe a nice drink was all he needed. But she was happy to know that he had taken up her offer. But from the way his hands were settled and the nervousness to his laugh, she could only assume that there were some misunderstandings. Or at least a bit of uncertainty on why she would offer her assistance to a person that she barely even knew.
Mayhaps the lady was a bit too forward.
Hush Arion.
She sighed and set her tea cup down, finding that it was almost empty. She'd have to ask for a refill when the server returned but for now, her problem lied with the person in front of her.
"I do," she said. "And as much as I'd like to say that I am generous enough to offer hospitality to everyone, I don't have the most approachable aura."
Valencia settled back in her chair as she drummed her fingers against her knee.
"You seemed a little perturbed and reminded me of someone hard at work," she explained. "So I wanted to be of any help that I could instead of sending you away."
She looked up to meet his gaze.
"I apologize if I was too forceful in my attempts."

Little tiny Tony's were running in his mind, screaming danger!danger! repeatedly in blind panic. Even with his order made and the two of them sitting casually on the table, Tony couldn't feel at ease. His hands itched to fidget or tap the surface, but he held onto composure well enough to look straight at her without panicking or breaking down in anxiety. As she spoke, he listened attentively and quickly shook his head in response to her comment on herself.
"What? No! On the contrary, you look like a very friendly and kind person. Why anyone would think otherwise is a mystery." Maybe he was laying it on a little too thick there, but a lot of compliments could go a long way. Unless of course she hated flattery, then he was screwed.
At her explanation of why she invited him to her table and offered food, he blinked, smiled sheepishly, then rubbed the back of his neck. Now he felt awful for thinking horrible things about her motives. While he wasn't completely at ease yet, her words assured him that at least she wasn't about to stab him to death.
"Ah, well, thank you. I was working crates earlier this morning so excuse me if I look haggard and tired." He brushed the front of his hair with his fingers, as if that would make him appear more presentable. "And you have no need to apologize. You did nothing wrong."
Feeling a bit bolder now, he asked, "So what were you doing before I arrived? I hope I didn't interrupt anything important."
His compliment was rather jarring if she was going to be honest. Valencia was told before that most men didn't prefer women who were as bullheaded as she could be. However, it didn't seem to be in her character to kneel to someone's will or lessen herself for their benefit. Therefore although his compliment and analysis of her person was odd, it did make her smile a little. She tilted her head to the side as he rubbed the back of his neck and his smile seemed apologetic in a way.
Her eyebrow quirked and Arion mused that perhaps her presence had done a number on Mr. Anthony. She hushed him internally and listened attentively as he told her of what led him into being in such a state. Her eyebrow quirked and she couldn't help but wonder what he'd be moving crates for. It wasn't her business but the idea of someone being in trade was a little interesting. A field of work in which she'd never held an interest for until reaching her young adult years, but one of interest nonetheless.
"I was reading," she told him. "Studying to be more precise."
Arion huffed in the back of her mind and she could feel a wetness on her elbow. If her familiar had been standing next to her, he would've pressed his nose to her elbow. A sure sign that he wasn't quite satisfied with her answer.
"But, I have been overdoing it lately and needed a bit of a distraction."
She chuckled softly and gestured to him.
"And then you walked into my life," with those words she gave a light shrug. "Everything that I needed from where I'm sitting."
Their server came back with a cup of coffee and looked to Valencia when she inquired about having another cup of tea.

Oh that was a very nice smile. One that promised to steal hearts if it had been brighter and bigger. Tony smiled back, thankful that she took his flattery in a positive manner. Her expression was charming and elegant, and really put him at ease in this conversation. His shoulders lost all tension as he leaned back on his chair and slung one arm over the head.
Then he wrinkled his nose at her mention of studying. "Sounds tiring." He never went to school, nor did he learn magic in a standard manner. While Tony was no genius, he survived the streets through his own wit. His teacher eventually figured out that Tony would never understand anything even if he forced him to sit down with a book. Instead, he trained him in more unconventional, but practical means.
His eyes went wide in disbelief as Valencia spoke, throwing out such cheesy lines about him that Tony thought she was mocking him at first. Placing a hand to his chest, he smiled. "Ah, you flatter me Miss Godfrey. For a beautiful woman like you, I will be whatever kind of distraction you want me to be."
Loki groaned. "Oh god. I'm going to throw up."
He ignored his familiar's comments as the server returned with his coffee. As he picked it up, he glanced at Valencia and shook his head. "No, this is fine." If it wasn't for the fact that she was actually paying for these, or that he didn't want to spend any more money himself, he would've ordered more.
Lifting the cup to his lips, he blew on the top of the rim before taking a sip. He closed his eyes and sighed as the warmth hit him and he savored its taste. "Nothing like good coffee in the morning." Setting it back down, he looked back at Valencia.
"And what do you normally do if you're not studying?"
That much Valencia was sure of as she watched him go through the motions. Every word that he said, every gesture that he made, would've brought her to her knees if she was weak to the idea of a man who would humble themselves for her. But she had to say that it was amusing that he would do such and his smile was infectious. The smallest of smiles formed on her lips as she thanked the server and asked for another cup of tea. Once she looked back to him, she watched him carefully to make sure that the coffee was alright.
He wasn't someone that she knew very well. But anyone in her company would be treated with the utmost care. It was a rule that came with being a Godfrey but one that she'd bitterly believe had gone forgotten by her elders. Nonetheless, she was in good company and there was nothing but smile and laughter to be had between the two of them.
"I agree," she said to his comment towards the coffee.
If she was going to be honest, coffee was her lifeblood. It was one of the things that she consumed very often besides tea and water. An important aspect of her studying habits considering that pulling all-nighters was a difficult escapade. Yet just as her mind trailed back to studying, he snapped her back to reality and she thought on it.
"Anything that I am trusted with," she said. "I take my duties seriously and try to be there for anyone in need. Constant patrols of the city, maybe even taking a few requests that come here and there. Stargazing is also nice and going on walks in the park."
She hummed and looked up just as the server returned with her tea. Taking the cup, she gave a quiet thanks and took a sip.

Tony listened to Valencia give a summary of how she led her daily life, nodding from time to time. He heavily noted her 'patrols', which hinted that she associated herself more with authoritative figures - people he avoided with determination. The Godfreys were respectable folk after all, so he supposed it made sense that they were law-abiding, helpful citizens of Salem. Memories of his first mission with Cain came to mind, and he wondered how Valencia would react if she found out her brother was getting into some shady, dark business for cash.
Mentally shaking those thoughts, he chuckled and smiled as she ended with Stargazing. "That's a pretty wide range of interests there." Even though he had no interest in sitting on one spot just to stare up at stars that don't really do anything, he didn't judge others who enjoyed it.
Then he crossed his arms and hummed in thought when the question was thrown back at him. "Well first off, I never studied. I trained." A wry smirk lifted up the corner of his mouth. "The difference being I don't sit down with a book. Instead I was forced to do hard labor while performing magic at the same time. Helped with my concentration and focus." As much as he hated to admit it, those torturous sessions paid off in the end. But he'll never say that to his teacher.
"Other than that, I do all sorts of jobs. If I'm not working, I'm usually running errands for my family. And if I wanted to unwind, I usually find some unsuspecting victim and pull a harmless prank on them." He grinned as he said the last part. Then clearing his throat, he took out the medal that was awarded to him before and showed it to Valencia. "I don't know if you know, but I won the master trickster award during the Joker's Jamboree."
For a second, Valencia wondered if she should expand her interests by a margin. She was usually so wrapped up in her work and in her practices that she seemed to lack any interest in fun. It may have come with her image or it may have been because of her upbringing but she lacked the interest in 'what ifs' to ask herself whether it would be wise to deviate from her usual course. But as she listened to Anthony speak about what he did, she could feel the bubbling questions in her chest begin to rise up. There were many things that she wanted to ask him.
How did he train?
Was he awful at studying?
How large was his family?
Did they enjoy spending time with one another?
The questions were endless and would've stretched a mile long. However, they all came to a halt as he cleared his throat and displayed a medal with a grin that could rival the sun. She'd heard about the Joker's Jamboree but was out of town during the time it was being held. In truth, she didn't want to attend at all. Something like that would've had many people and many families as well. Surely, the Godfreys were in attendance and a part of her wouldn't have been able to stomach being among them without Cain at her side.
"Unable to study, pranking others, and a master trickster," she said. "I think my initial perception of you may have been askew."
She lifted her cup and took a sip.
"You seem like the kind of man most mothers warn their daughters about."
