this is Salem, a land filled with magic and maladies. It is a place where witches and their elemental familiars gather, a home to legend and
lore that predates time itself. Yet of all the wicked and wonderful stories the past can tell us of, the most magical are the ones yet to happen.
This is Salem - this is the start of your very own journey. Welcome to starfall
Starfall is an animaga witch roleplay set in mostly modern times. Members play as witches in a world plagued by monsters, where the only safe spots are walled cities. Starfall strives to be a character-driven roleplay with expansive lore and a highly interactive plotline. We want to allow members to
create and look back on a magical journey, and mold the site and its plot as their characters grow.

lightning crackles past her head as it impacts the undead thing again, but iolani's a little bit too occupied wondering what the fuck is going on to pay it much mind ( though, that doesn't stop her from gaining a little respect for his aim - little knight might be someone to look out for ). this time, as she darts closer while it spasms on the floor, her kill isn't as clean as she stabs it in the skull. hard. and leaves the dagger there, pinning it to the ground in case it decided to try and attack her again.
"well. this just got interesting," she says softly, eyes blade-sharp and narrowed. for a moment, there is nothing of the obnoxiously cheerful girl of earlier; in her place is a witch of blue-edged steel and the ominous potential of a thunderstorm, hard and soft and lethal as the kiss of a knife. then she blinks, and the moment is gone; a devil-may-care smirk back on her lips as she relaxes and looks up at charani.
"i'm going further in," she says, motioning towards the rest of the cave. "you coming?"
'hey,' comes her familiar's voice suddenly, a note of gruff caution and wariness in nir otherwise crass tone. 'shithead. weird as fuck fox thing wandering this way. looks half dead. your drone's going in for a closer look.'
oh? how very interesting.

Another quick stab into the skull... blade brimming from the head as it pins the thing into the ground. The body spasms before laying still with the knife still embeded inside the cranium. Thirty seconds go by and it makes no movement. It's dead for sure this time. They should figure this out. Something was very very unsettling about all of this. Maybe someone experimenting on creatures? Something wasn't right.
"Couldn't be necromancy... maybe a parasite or some kind of homunculi..." he said trying to figure it out in his mind. With limited materials and maybe using corpses as a medium for the alchemy it could be a poorly created homunculi. It'd explain the strange behavior and aggressiveness of all the creatures so far. That means there is a witch somewhere here though. On the other hand a parasite would explain the half dead state as well as the aggression. Well they'd have to delve further in to find out.
"Yes. I'm coming." He quietly followed the young woman, his familiar at his heels on high alert. These creatures could be anywhere and there was no telling how many of them were out there. No telling what they were protecting either. They'd find out though... even if it was technically a little more than the mission required.
The entrance was very close to them so it wouldn't take long to go down the hall. It looked fairly tight compared to the part of the entrance where they were currently. Charani didn't mind since he is... well a small young man. He made his way to go down with his familiar right by him. What would they find in this weird cave?

well, at least this time the zombie bat doesn't jump up and try to kill her again. it actually stays dead - though, to be perfectly honest, that's kinda disappointing given that she was just getting her hopes up for an undying pet bat. whatever. huginn/muninn would probably have torn it apart due to jealousy anyways.
"couldn't be necromancy," the kid knight mutters, and yeah, hey, iolani's not so ready to discount that possibility. with the shit she's been involved in, with the world she's born to, there are some really fucking desperate people out there who would do anything to reach their goals. but no, necromancy is some dark shit even for her - not that she hasn't seen a few attempts - this, no matter how weird and creepy and unnatural, is probably not the reanimated and raised dead.
"a fucked up homunculi is my guess," she says, flashing charani a bright smile, back to being airy and inappropriately cheerful. pulling out another dagger and twirling it as she saunters past, her casual stance belies nothing of the quicksilver cogs whirling behind her eyes.
given the undead bat, and now presumably the undead fox her familiar is tailing, there's probably gonna be more zombie animals in their near future. probably gonna be a crazy mad scientist witch too, or whatever's making the ( presumed ) homunculi. now, see, iolani isn't opposed to killing a madman or two, but with the little knight here....
the hallway-tunnel thing leading deeper into the cave is suspiciously absent of ambushes and more critters. the further they go, the more tense she becomes, though she's very careful not to display any of that nervousness to the little knight. now that'd just be embarressing. "whaddya think?" she muses casually as they walk. "mad scientist, evil ruler wannabe, or idiot who takes the cake for most fucked up spell attempt?"

A homunculus seemed likely he had to agree with the young woman. It was the easiest option of the three. Creating some kind of creature to infect another was more difficult than just creating or modifying a creature slightly. Necromancy was not something he was aware had been done for centuries or... even if it could be done. He'd never had dreams of that kind but... then again he'd only been having his dreams for maybe a year now. A lot happened before and after this point in time. A lot would or could happen. It was a strange feeling. It was a feeling.
The creature remained on the ground. There was no sign of life... nothing. It was like a piece of rock or a wooden table. Lifeless. Inanimate. The woman was very much leading the way from there. The hallway tunnel thing was moist but relatively quiet. There were no ambushes... no signs of life. There were some crystals growing along their path that gave off a faint shimmer but that was all. There was nothing. It felt like a graveyard it was so quiet... even the faint drips of water were quiet.
"Perhaps super villain? Like you know in the comics... or a cult leader... whoever it is... they aren't right... everything here feels wrong..." he said with a shiver. He was right. Something felt very cold... very off and wrong. It was like some kind of evil permeated this place and it was not a good feeling. Who knows perhaps it as just him? It was like some black aura was enveloping this place.
They had been going for a while before they reached what had to be the main room of the cave. There was shuffling and some kind of voice. Mumbling to themselves maybe? Whoever or whatever it was had their back to the two. There was a sharp turn from the hall into the room. Peering into the room looked to be a lot of man made objects. Tables... cages... lots of animal noises. There were what looked like warding symbols painted all around the main room. Whoever this was... they were probably dangerous.

"a supervillain?" she pauses solely so she can raise a judgemental eyebrow at the little knight, even though the blood-red smirk doesn't waver one inch. not that iolani cares, or really even judges the kid for his tastes in entertainment, but it's the point of the matter really. no one has ever accused her of being nice after all ( unless she's been playing around with them and seeing how long she can fool them for, maybe, or using a sweet and innocent persona as a cover, or something like that ). "somehow, i very much doubt there are many supervillains here, much less in some cave in the middle of bug-fuck nowhere on the outskirts of sundial."
the little knight shivers, and okay, yeah, iolani totally feels that, though she's hardly going to show it. 'everything feels wrong' might not be a description that will be winning literary prizes anytime soon, but hey, she's a simple chick and it's pretty much accurate. her instincts are just screaming at her to ditch this place as quick as she fucking can and if her life has taught her one thing, it's to listen to her body's survival judgement honed over millions of years of evolution, y'know? unfortunately, she's still got this fuckass mission to complete, but you bet your ass if things go to shit she's gonna be beating a strategic retreat the fuck out of here.
the air seems to grow colder, more stilted as they approach the main cave. her ears prick up at the muffled voice, and the soft shuffling sounds of someone moving about; her fingers tighten around the hilt of her dagger, eyes sharpening to a blade-like intensity. glancing around, taking in the clearly experimental and ritualistic stuff in the room, iolani twists around to face charani and puts her finger to her lips in the universal shush gesture. then, she CLOAKS herself in the shadows, silently inching forwards towards the person mumbling to themself.
quietly, quietly, inch by inch, she creeps forwards; and finally judging the distance to be safe, she leaps forwards and slams the hilt of her dagger on top of his head. the dude collapses, instantly unconscious, and iolani lets her cloaking fade from herself to look back at the little knight with a smugly satisfied grin. so what, she might not be the most flashy witch with world-bending spells, but hey, she can get the job done with a hella fucking lot less mess.

The young woman shushes him as the get closer to whoever was in the weird robe with the cages of creatures. To be honest he was way to far away from them to make out what they were in the darkness of the cave. Iolani made her move cloaking herself and then clocking whoever the mastermind behind this was on the head knocking them out. Well that was quick.
The cages were very clear to Iolani as she was so close. If she took even a second to look at what was inside she'd figure out why she felt so... cold and... like she needed to get away. To run away. Monsters. Black and oozy creatures held in cages with dark soulless eyes. They were capturing monsters. Why? That was something the council could figure out later given the not awake state of the person in front of her.
"What do you see?" he stage whispered so the girl could hear him. A low moan could be heard from the cages as the creatures sensed someone new. They hungered. They hungered for that which they couldn't have. There was an air of dread the closer you got to them. It was like staring into an empty abyss knowing that it would swallow you whole.
The warding symbols and steel cages seemed to be keeping the monsters in check. That was good. They also didn't seem to vanish with the state of their creator so that was a good sign. They should just pick up them person and leave. That would be best. Wouldn't it? There was rattling against the cages. They wanted out. They wanted the witches.

say what you want about iolani and confidence in her own skill, but even she sort of expects there to be something else after knocking the crazy guy out. fanfare, maybe. fireworks, earthquakes, a ghost popping out to scream at them. or more realistically, the guy having some sort of back up plan, or partner. but the world patently refuses to give them some drama ( in all honesty, if something did happen, she'd be complaining about that, so y'know. whatever. ), and even leaning down to check the guy's eyes shows him to be actually honestly unconscious, so.
are they done?
well, not really, given the stuff in the cages she can now pay attention too. dark and oozing and radiating an aura of coldness, gee, she wonders what the fuck they could be? though she does wonder how the fuck he managed to get them in the cages, let alone so many of them. "a fuckton of monsters?" she answers sarcastically, pulling up her athenian interface and quickly checking to see which monsters are here. yeah, a shit ton of variety too. she narrows her eyes at the wards and symbols, not recognising them but immediately thinking about how she could use them. sell the information, maybe. or something - information will always come in handy some day. with that in mind, she starts jotting down and taking note of the shit into her interface. "just gonna make note of these wards," she tells her partner.
pause. "oh," she says, absently and unconcerned. "there's an undead fox thing heading our way. looks a little crazy. take care of it, wouldja?"

Who the hell collected monsters? They were probably being either experimented on or whoever this was planned on releasing them into the local village or something like that. He never knew with bad guys who didn't seem to have any actual plans or backing behind them. Unless he or she did but had cut ties with them? Or they were just a small time fish in the plan.
The cages were rattled harder as Iolani sat there transcribing the damn runes. They glowed a bright blue color and to be honest with a runescripter on the case like Ling those runes could easily be transcribed. They seemed to be warding runes mixed with barrier runes as a means to keep the creatures influence and body in check. Something that would be simple for any runescripter with a lick of talent.
"Well that's... terrifying?" he said with his normal voice this time. No need to stage whisper when whoever it was is for sure not awake. Then she said something about an undead fox thing coming towards them. Well that was annoying. He was very tired and not in the mood for this to keep dragging on. It was annoying. Very annoying.
The strange fox creature was... smaller than a normal fox. It was closer to Teddy's size and seemed to be very rapidly approaching. Charani flicked his wand at the creature with a shot of lightning exploding from the tip as the vibrionus spell hit the creature. You could smell the burning flesh from where Iolani was as the thing... caught fire? Well time to leave. "Okay time to go." They'd no doubt leave the damn cave and report back about their mission. On the plus side it was simple and rather quick.

transcribing the runes is boring work and she hates being bored, but it also goes a lot faster than she expects. there's a lot of repeated shit to be honest, and while iolani really doesn't know the first thing about runes aside from certain specific arrays that can be used for assassination, even she can guess that this warding is probably some more basic shit. maybe she'll go hunt down a runescripter when this is done, get them to explain. being able to cage monsters would be a fucking useful tool if anything.
"no more than the undead bat thing," she says absently, fingers blurring as she types the last of the wards into her interface. there's a flash of bright light that throws everything into harsh relief, a boom, and then the lovely smell of burning flesh. great. just the sort of shit she wants to deal with on a regular tuesday, y'know? but hey, the little knight one-shot killed the fox, so she's at least gotta give him some props for that.
closing her interface, iolani stretches out indolently, the sound of her joints cracking echoing through the cave. "okay," she says after that, unhurried and casual with that same crimson smirk resting on her lips. "i'm done. let's get outta here."
