this is Salem, a land filled with magic and maladies. It is a place where witches and their elemental familiars gather, a home to legend and
lore that predates time itself. Yet of all the wicked and wonderful stories the past can tell us of, the most magical are the ones yet to happen.
This is Salem - this is the start of your very own journey. Welcome to starfall
Starfall is an animaga witch roleplay set in mostly modern times. Members play as witches in a world plagued by monsters, where the only safe spots are walled cities. Starfall strives to be a character-driven roleplay with expansive lore and a highly interactive plotline. We want to allow members to
create and look back on a magical journey, and mold the site and its plot as their characters grow.
The night was particularly quiet, again. That is, save for a few birds chirping and flying in the night sky and noises in the Mirrorlight Metropolis hanging around the air. Caleb was out exploring yet again, but this time he wasn't alone. Aria, his familiar, decided to come with him on his next explorations. The eagle couldn't be reassured about Caleb's safety around the towns of Salem anymore; ever since the incident with him almost getting lost in Eclipse Town, Caleb made sure to tell Aria if he was going anywhere. The bird would usually agree, but sometimes if the place is going is dangerous she would disagree and shake her head. But since Mirrorlight Metropolis was pretty much known, both decided to go there for a little break.
The hawk flew gracefully in the dark night sky, greeting a few of the other birds soaring high in the air as well. Her keen eyes still kept watch on her master, though, in case he would stray away from the path. The bird dove to meet and be at her master's side. Perching on the mute boy's shoulder, she looked around the metropolis. It is nice here, master, don't you agree? She asked of him, which earned a nod from the man.
A silent chuckle wafted across Caleb's lips as he faced his familiar with a smile. Indeed it is, Aria. It's the perfect place to explore. He replied to her. Looking left and right, he asked again, but... are there any people in here? Like in Eclipse Town, I saw a blonde haired man who tripped over his feet because--
You've told me that story over ten times already, master. I do not wish to hear it the eleventh time. Aria interrupts the boy, who simply chuckles again. The bird giggles herself, before looking over to the path they are headed to. Well, we should get going now, master. Do tell me if you want to get back home now; otherwise we would be lost in a city as large as this.
Caleb could simply nod in response, watching his familiar as she flies over the left side of the alleyway. Caleb turns his head back, eyes furrowed in worry, before he shook his head and followed Aria towards the second path.

[attr="class","hazeltextstarfall"]He should be getting home. Should being the keyword. But, as always, something just had to go wrong. Really, today wasn't his day - first, it was the client he was supposed to meet. It was a simple job, really, one that he'd done before: all he had to do was be a good courier and go about delivering items to the lazy bums who couldn't be bothered to pick up the stuff they bought themselves. It was quick and easy; he'd be paid and homeward-bound before sundown, like all the other times he'd done this. But today? No, the man who asked for his aid in the deliveries wasn't just late to tell him what precisely needed to be delivered and where, he'd also gotten everything wrong![break][break]
Hazel lost count how many times on the day's trip he'd been turned away because either the item wasn't the correct one or because the address was wrong. It was infuriating, especially since it took the man in charge ages to dig up his records and cross-check everything - heck, when he first got there, he was sure he had waited at least an hour while the man fumbled with his wares and rushed about the store in a panic, having not prepared the items to be given to Hazel the day before. Sloppy, unprofessional, and Hazel made a mental note never to accept helping the man ever again - it wasn't worth his time.[break][break]
After all, look what the trouble got him - a job that ended way into the night when the moon and stars were high in the sky and most every sane person was in their houses turning in for the night. He grumbled and cursed, winding his way through alleyways as he made his way back to the place he called home. With any luck, his family might have yet saved something for him to eat, but he was fine with going hungry; wasn't like it was new to him, that pang of pain as his stomach growled angrily for sustenance. Hazel sighed, he really didn't enjoy the day - not that he usually did, but today specifically was, simply put, shit.[break][break]
So deep in thought and annoyed over the day's happenings was he that, even when his familiar demanded his attention, cawing both vocally and mentally, he didn't pay any heed. At least, not until he'd rounded the corner and walked head-first into another person. Idiot. Came the exasperated call of his hawk, as the familiar flew to perch on the roof of a nearby building. As I tried to warn you, watch where you're going.[break][break]
It was a chiding tone - nearly scolding but not quite. Exasperated but with a hint of laughter underneath - Valen was amused, and to that Hazel scowled, though his anger wasn't true. In the moments after the crash - arms rubbing slightly sore areas, a grunt of surprise - eyes turned upward, searching looking for his hawk, before he focused on the boy before him. "Sorry." Hazel said with an inclination of his head. "You alright?" Even if he wasn't a people's person, he still at least had some common decency to ask after another's wellbeing after walking into them.
Caleb was still deep in thought. Should he really be out here all alone in the night? Aria was still flying overhead, enjoying the breeze of the night air. He could simply watch and smile. Aria was a good bird. Someone he could rely with. The bird had been there for him ever since he walked into Jester's Den, assisted him in communicating with others. He knew now that it wasn't the time to worry, since Aria is already there with him--
His thoughts were disrupted when he collided with the ground with a nice, soft thud. This must've startled Aria, who was staring down from the sky. She gasped and dove in, eventually perching on Caleb's shoulder. Now who would dare-- She did not finish her sentence once she turned her head, seeing an unfamiliar face before. Huh, he also had a bird familiar. She kept silent and turned to Caleb, who simply blinked.
"You alright?" The stranger asked him. Caleb simply nodded, standing up from his spot and dusting off the dirt that had gotten in his pants. He smiled at the other boy, then turned to Aria, who immediately nodded.
Yes,he is fine, stranger. Though he does suggest to watch where you are going, but nothing offensive.

[attr="class","hazeltextstarfall"]Their attention was held by the other’s avian familiar, to which Valen’s first thought to Hazel was, Huh, a bird. The boy simply rolled his eyes in response, giving his familiar a glare that simply said, ‘Really?’ But regardless of the mental shots they took at each other while they stood in front of the other pair, Hazel was at least still able to make conversation, while Valen simply kept watch from above.[break][break]
“…You don’t speak for yourself?” Hazel enquired, eyes flicking from the bird to the boy. He’s curious, but he also knew to respect other’s privacy. In other words, he realised he probably shouldn’t have asked and should have simply accepted being…was he being forgiven? “Thanks.” He replied, somewhat uncertainly as a result of his confusion. “I’ll…be sure to keep that in mind.”[break][break]
At that point, he would have just left, walked on and forgot this ever happen by the morrow, but Valen just had to open his mouth. …uh, beak. Hey, hey, wait. He called out, stopping Hazel from leaving. Geez, some guy you are, leaving this poor child to wander the streets alone by himself with his familiar! Show some compassion and - come on, it’s been a while since I last saw an avian familiar. We’re always so busy and I’d love the interaction![break][break]

here lies everything, the world i wanted at my feet
The young man simply looked at the other boy, eyes glistening with curiosity. Whatever was he doing here? Surely he couldn't be lost and all alone with only his familiar. Or maybe... he was exploring like what Aria and himself are doing right now? Caleb nodded and signed to him that it was okay, though he probably wouldn't understand that.
When he inquired whether he does not speak for himself, the young man sighed. He turned to Aria, who nodded at him and perched up to her master's shoulder. She'd give him a chance to talk. Then Caleb performed a gesture that seemed to be keeping his mouth zipped tight, or, otherwise, he was mute. It might not be quite understandable, but he hoped the other boy would get it sooner or later.
He saw the other turn and leave, and he was about to go his own way, too, when Aria suddenly stopped him. She smiled reassuringly at her master before turning and flying over to the other boy's familiar. Hello there, fellow familiar. She greeted the other eagle, nodding to the other eagle's master. Say, I just want to ask. In case our path's cross yet again, me and my master would like to remember your names. May I ask of your name, and your master's, too? To not act quite suspicious, she decided to tell them her and Caleb's names, first. I'll name myself first. My name is Aria, and my master you can call Caleb. And yours are...?
have my mute boy XD also, template borrowed from verdigris• Hazel Halcyon • 0000

[attr="class","hazeltextstarfall"]The stranger, as it turned out, knew sign language - Hazel could thus infer that he was either mute or deaf, since he knew that some who could not hear would sign to communicate, even if their vocal cords were in perfect working condition. Which of the two, if not both, the male was inflicted with was confirmed when the other drew a line over his mouth - signalling that he could not speak.[break][break]
Still, it was but a simple interesting fact of the man and meant nothing much to the Silvertongue member - he didn’t desire to know anything more than necessary, which in other words meant he didn’t need to know anything else other than if the other was alright. So he even when he was stopped he simply gazed at the other pair with his arms crossed, staying silent and letting his familiar do all the talking.[break][break]
Oh, call me Valen and the brooding young man over there is Hazel. Thankfully you asked me and not him for our names or I swear he’d just stare you down like the brick wall he is - like now, really! Valen squawked after he introduced himself and Hazel, flapping his wings once, then twice, before settling back onto the roof and continuing to speak, I swear, this child is impossible! Dislikes talking to others when he can help it- There’s another loud squawk from the hawk - frantic, for a rock was thrown his way - and he takes off before landing back on the same roof and shuffling away from Hazel’s position as he stared down at the boy incredulously. Really? A rock? What did I ever do to you?[break][break]
In response, Hazel just shrugged, his gaze returning to Caleb. See what I mean? Insufferable little prick! Anyway, yes, yes, those are our names but I’m sure he’ll respond to ‘wall’, ‘boy’, ‘child’ all the same. At that, Hazel looked up, growled and chucked another rock the hawk’s way - who shuffled over to avoid it while scolding the teen.[break][break]
[attr="class","victoriousscroll"]Caleb observed the young man in front of him. He didn't seem like the type to talk openly, but he did have some concern for what other people have been through. The young boy smiled and simply nodded, then perked his head up to see what Aria and the other eagle -- the other boy's familiar -- is up to. They seem to be deep in conversation right now... it's not right for him to interrupt.
Aria giggled as the other eagle introduced himself and his master. Valen, hmm? Nice to meet you and Hazel. She stated with a smile on her beak. My name is Aria, and my master over there is Caleb. He grew up a mute man, but still a kind person... he would love to strike a conversation if he could.
Then a stone was thrown at Valen's way, which almost hit Aria, and this also surprised Caleb as well. The female hawk squawked in surprise like how Valen reacted. Once Valen has started calling his master an 'insufferable little prick', she could only shake her head and let out a small chuckle as she landed on the roof next to Valen. Haha... I can see what you mean. But aren't you a little harsh on him? Or is he harsh on you?
Then Valen spoke about how those were their names, but he would respond to three other mean names all the same. Caleb and Aria both silently giggled. They noticed a lot of differences between them and the other pair, but all in all are still quite the same.
And yes, it's just the familiars talking to each other XD
