So, she's going to welcome a new Knight? This certain fellow is older than Claire, but holds a lower rank. That is why Claire is uncertain of how to approach the woman. She has been told to test her skills, and this is not an alien thin among the ranks of the Knights, although it is not practiced to every new member.
But the identity of this certain individual rings a dim bell. Argentia... it seems familiar, but at the same time, not so much. Claire doesn't remember when or where she heard it. Maybe that is why the higher-ups are wary of her, and why she has to do this. This has absolutely no bearing to the prestige of any Knight. It is more of a formality, a test of strength, a time when one can prove they are going to be more than the first impression they would give.
As far as she is told the newcomer would be at the one of barren training grounds at the Helios Knights Hall. And so Vani and Claire makes their way to the said place. Vani, unlike Claire, seems eager for this meeting.
"Hey, we gotta show the noob her place!" the boar exults. "You're gonna get a sidekick, Claire!"
A sidekick, huh.... Claire would never. This is going to be a slightly aggressive orientation, nothing more.
It's Vani who first spot the blonde hair from afar. He picks up his pace and goes as far as to nudge the woman with his tusks while Claire slows her pace, waiting to see how the woman would react to such harsh and straightforward words. Afterall, the ranks of the Knights is more cruel than what Vani can ever display.
"Your name, newbie? You better show some respect, huh," the white boar huffs , voice ringing with arrogance.

The blonde Knight makes her way towards the Helios Knights Hall, a bit hesitant at first. Someone said another Helios Knights woman would meet her there. Rogue crawled along her back, simply resting and wagging his dangling tail while his master worried about whoever was waiting for her. She would expect someone older than her, and someone of a higher rank than she is. Well, there were expected practice battles when it comes to this; she had always enjoyed fencing and swordfighting and she is well-versed with it, but with someone whom is a higher rank than hers, she would have to be careful.
[break][break]Oh, would you look at that face. You shouldn't worry about anything! It's just a Knight wanting to welcome you. Rogue cooed from behind her, and for a moment she wanted to throw him out of her shoulders. But Emery only rolls her eyes, glaring at the wild cat. "Lucky for you, mister. You aren't the one who's going to get nervous about meeting someone of a higher rank than you, do tell."
[break][break]Rogue giggled, nuzzling his face against his paws. Well, it is your first few months in Sundial, so I won't judge. Being nervous is normal, trust me.
[break][break]Emery scoffed, crossing her arms. "I was hoping you'd say that, for a cat who just made fun of my nervousness just a while earlier."
[break][break]Then both familiar and witch spot the woman in the distance. As they near the woman, a white boar runs up to them and seems to ram his tusks into her leg. Emery doesn't budge, but Rogue seems to now dislike this gesture. So this is how you welcome my master? He asks the boar, irritation oozing from his voice. Emery whips his head towards the cat, eyes wide and reprimanding.
[break][break]Emery faces the other blonde and chuckles nervously. "Hahah, I am sorry. Rogue is always like this if he dislikes a gesture." She then turns to the boar, but before she could reply, Rogue snarls at him, his face pinched like a lemon. "Rogue, quiet it down," She pats the wild cat, but Rogue still continues to glare at the boar. Emery then smiles and turns back to the boar again. "And my name is Emery Argentia. I'll try my best to behave here, like what you said."

Everyone knows that a familiar is a manifestation of a witch. They either complement the witch by being polar opposites, or match the witch in almost everything, or maybe something of a mix between the two. In this case the witch and the familiar looks like polar opposites, with the cat returning Vani's arrogance. The witch handles the situation with a bit more form.
Vani, on the other hand, turns his attention to the cat, forgetting the new Knight. "Yeah, this is how I welcome your witch," Vani replies proudly. He lowers his tusk and attempts to the nudge the cat with one of his ice-cold tusks. "Got a problem with that scaredy cat?"
Well, Vani has no way of winning against the feline anyway. The cat could jump out of the way and rake his eyes with her sharp claws as he tries to send her small body flying. Vani isn't really suited to fight... a clever opponent. And then it's game over and he'd be sulky about it for the whole month. While the two familiars beef it out Claire formally approach the female.
"Good morning, I'm Claire Fermont, one of the Adepts in the ranks of the Helios Knight. You are Emery Argentia, if I'm not mistaken." She holds out her hand in a formal handshake.
Claire glances at Vani still trying to pick a fight with the cat. "I'll just have to say that this is a perfectly normal way to welcome a new Knight. Some had it tougher especially if they come from the less privileged class. I heard you're well off financially... your last name sounds vaguely familiar though I can't be sure." Claire gives her a level look, a piercing stare that tells her Claire is talking business. "However I would give no biases over anyone, and I expect you to do the same. In no time you will be moving up, and I expect you to be virtuous with your duty."

Emery looks on in annoyance as Rogue growls at the boar again, who seems to have told him something that the cat really didn't like. At the boar's statement, Rogue snarls loudly, his claws ready to slash anything at any minute. Yes. I have problems with that, boar. She sighs and shakes her head in exasperation, before turning to the other blonde female Knight who was starting to approach them. This must be one of the higher Knights, she thought to herself. Emery takes the woman's hand as she introduces herself as Claire and they both have a formal handshake.
[break][break]"Good morning to you too. Yes, you are correct. My name is Emery Argentia." She stated, bowing at the adept. "Nice to meet you, Claire."
[break][break]Someday. She thought to herself, observing the female. I'll be a higher up like this woman. Someday.
[break][break]Claire then states that the first meeting she had with the boar was quite a normal greeting, Emery chuckling to herself at that fact. "Ah, yes. I should have told Rogue that." She then turned to the cat, still snarling at the boar, but he seemed to have calmed down a bit. Emery patted the cat on the head, before turning to Claire with a raised eyebrow. "Rogue is overly loyal, you could say. He doesn't tolerate offensive or rude greetings." Pouting, she added, "Though I don't really mind."
[break][break]The higher Knight then becomes serious after mentioning to not have any biases to anyone, and she expects Emery to be the same. Emery nods at this with a serious look as Claire's piercing stare meets her eyes. "Yes. Of course." She could simply say, but overall she totally agrees with this woman. Being a Knight is about virtue and honor, after all.
Wh--this cat has the guts to answer, huh? Vani pushes forward, trying to force the feline towards the training ring. Maybe it's time for a fight. Good thing, Vani hasn't yet eaten, might as well enjoy a good brawl for the morning. "Huh, you want to go, cat? Just say it--!"
Emery returns Claire's handshake and formally introduces herself. "A good familiar you have," Claire comments. She can tell that Rogue is a bit like Vani... but perhaps more disciplined and less arrogant to strangers. All the while Claire is observing how she would react to her words. She understands that some people are particularly skilled at hiding their emotions and keeping a perfect pokerface. Most of the time, though, one can see an unusual blink, a twitch of the mouth, a slight crease of the forehead, and those are enough to forward a stronger message.
Emery keeps a straight face, and if Claire is willing to assume further--she would say that Emery is true to those three simple words--yes, of course. Claire nods in acknowledgement, satisfied at the blonde's sincerity. "All right. Now, how about a little test of abilities. Let's see what's your worth, and how can I help in furthering your abilities. What's your affinity and element? Mine is ice, and I practice enchantment and augmentation. Quite the jock, you see?" Claire further adds with thick sarcasm.
And, before Vani gets a bloody snout full of three bloodied swipes, Claire calls him out, walking to him and tapping his wide back. "Hey, cut it out. You'll lose, anyway, might as well give up." Vani fumes at that, but does not comment any further. He just keeps snarling at the cat even as he backs down.

The blonde fledgling nods in gratitude to Claire's compliment about Rogue, even though she wasn't entirely sure if this was true. Rogue was good, yes, but sometimes there are times that he can really trip you off the edge. But she only smiled at this compliment and pats on the cat, who was starting to calm down. "Hehe, thank you." He had already stopped growling at the boar, simply glaring at him and waving his tail aggressively.
[break][break]Claire then tells her about a test of abilities, and asks her questions that relates to her magical capabilities. She then discovers that Claire is an ice enchantress and augmentation witch. Emery chuckles lightly at Claire's statement about her jock-like status. "Yes, quite the jock you are. Considering you are of a high rank." Emery states, then smiles as she replies to her question earlier. "I am of the earth element, my affinity, transfiguration."
[break][break]Then she looks on as Claire reprimands her familiar, and even though he looks angry at this, he doesn't attack any more, only snarls at Rogue who smirks and rests on Emery's shoulder. The blonde Knight turns to the cat with a bemused look, causing him to shrink down in reaction to this.
[break][break]Emery then turns to Claire and grins. "If you may, I would like to get to the test you had mentioned earlier." She then whipped her head to the training ring and tipped her head towards it while looking at Claire with an almost mischievous look on her face.
To be honest Claire does not know how to respond to the stereotype clinging to enchantment and augmentation. The jocks, the bodybuilders, the strong. It should be positive, but then enchanters and augmentors often are reduced to just that--strength. Claire doesn't understand them. But she knows better than to respond to their criticism. Judge, if they may, but it doesn't stop her from running over them once they cross the line.
Claire shrugs at Emery's comment. "Well, it all depends on preferences and personality. The high-ranking officials all vary in personality, so we should always be careful upon laying stereotypes."
Oh, so she's a transfigurator? Claire doesn't know anything about transfiguration... except that it mutates. Some can be permanent, some can be temporary. For a moment she remembers the memory of the wolf sister... that magic seems like a twisted form of transfiguration. "All right," Claire says, eager to move on. The duo move to the barren grounds, and Claire moves to one side, and then gestures for Emery to move to the other side.
"First, techniques. What techniques have you learnt so far?" Vani moves behind Claire, waiting for further instructions. He seems to be strangely smug. The boar is probably anticipating that the display he is about to see would be nothing but a joke. Claire continues, "I know only a few myself. That's the beauty of knowing little--you get proficient at the techniques."
The Knight is aware that Emery has only started, and she will hold judgment against her. Perhaps she could even help with endurance and strength training, as earth elementalists need fair power to hold out on their own.

Emery nods in agreement to Claire's later comments, but doesn't say any other words. "Yes, exactly right." She simply smiles and nods as Claire. For one, she actually has a point. Stereotypes can be wrong, sometimes, after all. And not all people come off as someone they had expected to be. Overall, she understood Claire's point. Only she didn't have to say any more than those two words.
[break][break]They finally move on to the most exciting part: training. Claire asks if there are any techniques she has learned, Emery nodding at this and smiling proudly. "I've learned only two techniques so far. And so far I still haven't fully mastered them yet." She held out her hand and lifted it suddenly high up; she also calls upon her familiar, Rogue, and together with their magic combined, they made two sharp spikes sprout out from the earth in a long line. She smiled cheekily and scratched her head. "Spears. I could only produce two, but I know by time that I will learn how to do more than that."
[break][break]Claire then points out that she had only learned little herself; Emery nods at this and smiles. "I can agree with that." She then held out her right hand and closed her eyes. "Now watch this." Again Rogue comes by beside her shoulder, and with a deep breath, she lifts her hand again and a fortress forms from their right.
[break][break]She sighs and opens her eyes, looking at Claire with a shrug and turned to the spells she had just conjured with Rogue. "Well. That's all that I can do." She said, then raised an eyebrow. "Do you have any advice for me, My Liege?"
Post by claire fermont on Aug 5, 2018 17:41:54 GMT
Ah, she just talked about stereotypes and how they shouldn't be hasty upon laying them, but here she is stereotyping herself in the next breath. She's not exactly happy about it, and the comment is thick with sarcasm. Nonetheless, she nods in acknowledgement before completely dropping the subject.
"All right," Claire simply says. She understands. Emery is just starting her career--she has much more room to grow. Claire steps aside to give the blonde space at the same time save herself from any crevasses of any sort--after all Emery would be altering the earth herself. Earth is a really powerful element, but like a double-edged sword. Powerful when abundant, weak when scarce--such is the nature of the element. Emery displays two techniques she has seen herself performed by two earth witches, namely Zephyr and Ling. Claire can definitely see the difference in strength, and how it is manifested through the technique.
"Meh," Vani snorts, gruff voice thick with the intent to tease the feline familiar. "Boring."
Claire shots him a warning glance, before continuing. "For one," the Knight starts, walking over to the earthen wall. "Earth's foundation is the durability of the witch. Keep that in mind." Claire pauses, then knocks at the fortress. It sounds a bit hollow. And when she looks at it, it's also relatively thin. "This could weaken one attack before collapsing. You and your familiar's durability would be reflected to your techniques. Be sure to work on that."
The Knight looks around and spots the line which marked the unearthing of the spears. "Ah, you also need to work on refining the spears. Sharper. I also suggest focusing on the speed of crafting the technique. A second too early can decide a battle."
Claire holds out her palm then. For effect her fingers begins to crystallize until her hand is encased with thin ice. Then, she curls it into a ball, pulverizing the chilling ice, the tiny shards barely able to pierce her skin. "Ice is somewhat similar to earth, in terms of the source of its power. I believe I know half of what I said."

Emery is done presenting the techniques she had learned to Claire, and as the superior between them begins talking, Emery listens intently. Advice and comments from other witches -- especially higher levels than her -- can certainly help her in the future. She walks up a few distances near Claire, then stands and stares as she listens to Claire talk.
[break][break]The only one probably disturbing her is Rogue, though. Hearing the insult from the boar, Rogue snarls, but Emery pats him and shakes her head.
[break][break]"Earth's foundation is the durability of the witch. Keep that in mind." Claire begins, and Emery could understand what she is saying. Of course, the foundation of the earth depends on how the witch summoned it, so the weaker the foundation the more damage it can't deal with.
[break][break]Claire knocks on the hollow-sounding fortress, and for a moment Emery froze in shame in her spot. Argh, Rogue and her really needed to work building a tougher one than that. Claire comments on her and her familiar's durability and its effect on the techniques, making her close her eyes and nod in understanding. "Y-Yes." She could simply utter out.
[break][break]But then, one learns from their failures, don't they?
[break][break]Then they turn next to the spears. Claire comments about refining the spears; sharper, she says, and the speed and time of crafting the technique. Emery makes sure she notes that in mind. In all honesty, though, Emery and her familiar did those spears in a hurry just so they have something to present to Claire, but getting a commentary like this still helps.
[break][break]Emery nods in understanding to all of Claire's words, although she has nothing to say right now. Then Claire holds out her hand covered with crystallized ice and she watches, as the ice from her hand turns into a ball. Listening to her talk, she stares at the ball for a few moments before turning to Claire.

"Sure."
Claire had said she only knows half of what she's talking about, and it's true. She's a master of enchantment and augmentation, but somehow she knows a few techniques. The beauty of the situation, although lacking of variety, she is fairly confident on the strength of the three techniques she practices with Vani.
Speaking of Vani, the boar trots forward to stand beside Claire. By now he has calmed down enough to the point when he just eyes the cat. Claire contemplates for a short minute about what to show Emery. Both Skater and Large Spread requires a large amount of space to work with. Otherwise she would destroy a cramped space. That leaves the last one.
Claire has noticed Emery's discomfort at her blunt words earlier. She isn't about to take them back, though she has something to say. "Don't be discouraged. Everyone starts from the bottom. I'll help you when I can."
She then turns to the boar. "Vani, melt the ice once it's about to hit." Vani just snorts.
Claire makes a small swipe on thin air using her arm. The temperature drops as ice materializes out of thin air in form of a sharp blade hurtling towards... nothing in particular. Claire expects the ice to melt, as she instructed Vani, before it hits the wall but instead, the blade shatters once it makes contact with the concrete.
The adept smacks the boar.
"Anyway," Claire clears her throat. "The technique is called Slicer. I developed it myself. In a way Slicer is similar to Spears--they both need to be sharp and fast to maximize their capacity. You can work first with your own physical fitness, then speed, sharpness, then the quantity of the technique. I can also--" Claire then makes a wide swipe, and a much bigger blade is created. Vani melts it as soon as it appears. Can't have it slicing a portion of the wall now.
"--Alter the size."

Claire's response makes her smile, so she steps aside and watches from a short distance. Claire tells her not to be discouraged, as she will be helping her whenever she can, and the blonde nods. She was equally glad to hear blunt criticisms from higher ranked witches and encouragements, as these made her learn much. From her shoulder, Rogue watches eagerly.
[break][break]Rogue simply stares back at the boar but doesn't even make the action of snarling; he just eyes him back, but something in his eyes challenges him. Let's see what you can do, He thought to himself. Emery suddenly smacks the cat, but before he could protest, she is already staring at Claire.
[break][break]Claire swipes the air, and from where she had swiped from ice materializes, hurtling forward but targets no one. The blonde instructed the boar earlier to melt the eyes when it was about to hit the ground. But it doesn't melt after a short while; the blade shatters once it hits the ground, nothing like what Claire had instructed her familiar.
[break][break]Once Vani is smacked, Rogue chuckles softly. Emery smacks him back with a glare.
[break][break]Claire then explains what spell that was, but once she hears that Claire had developed the technique herself, Emery's eyes widen. "You can develop techniques yourself? Amazing!" She questions, amazed. "I... I really didn't know that yet. I thought witches are accustomed to custom made spells once you are born..."
[break][break]But Claire is still explaining, so she stays quiet and listens intently, bowing her head as an apology. As Claire explains that Slicer is similar to Spears in some ways, she nods in understanding and begins thinking to herself, turning to Rogue. They'd also have to work on how fast they could cast the spears, as well as detach them and--
[break][break]Alter the size? She turns to Claire once she says she can also alter the size of the slicer. "Ah, so in a way spears can also be altered in size?" She asked, then grazed a finger through her chin, mumbling. "But then again, the larger the spear, the stranger it looks, and the duller its tip will be..." She then turns to Claire again. "I guess I'll stick to working on sharpening the spears, then."

Vani melts the big slice of ice, as he should. They would have to pay for the destroyed facilities, after all, or so does she think. Maybe that is why most of the Knights don't practice on the training grounds at all. And that is also the reason why she prefers to practice on the outskirts... on, you know, real life beasts. It's more challenging that way.
Claire nods, feeling smug. "Yes. I was given a chance to develop this technique after an event." It is an event she doesn't want to talk about, so she hurries to change the subject. "Of course not. New witches of course need to learn pre-made and perfected spells first, but once you gain enough expertise on your field then eventually the council would allow you to practice your creativity."
That reminds her--signature scrolls. This she hasn't made yet. "Right. So you can create your own unique spell once you reach adept, which is called the signature scroll."
The adept then resumes on her small speech, one she is accustomed to making. Her mind is in auto-pilot as she continues, which again reminds her that she has done this quite a few times already. It never gets old, and Claire will never get tired of it. "That is true. It's very difficult to alter both size, sharpness, and speed all at the same time. Even I find it more difficult. Perhaps what we could do is to focus on one aspect--yes, that is right. Sharpness first, then everything else later."
"Well you're different from everybody else," Vani suddenly pipes in. Claire is silent as he continues, as if already knowing what the boar has to say. "Very unlike that one blonde asshole. It makes me wanna hit her. Who is that again? Ch-Chanel?"

The blonde knight listens intently as Claire explains how she had developed the technique. She did mention something about an event... Emery wanted to ask about it, but Claire immediately switches to another topic, further making Emery fall silent as she listens to the adept once again. "Oh... is that so." She mumbles with a smile. "I'll have to work harder if I want that to happen to me, then."
[break][break]"Hmm... signature spells... interesting as well. Can't wait to become an adept like you." Emery smirks, before she grazes a finger through her chin, a sudden question coming to mind. "Do you believe that the custom spells -- those not created by us witches from this time -- have already been around for quite some time? Even in ancient times, I think?"
[break][break]Then they discuss the aspects of how to conjure the spears, or any other kind of spell, and Emery hums in understanding. "Yes, I can agree to that." She nods with a smile. One has to practice only one aspect before turning to the other, until you have the full capability to master everything they have learned.
[break][break]Her familiar turns to Vani as he tells her that she was different from anyone else, then mentioning someone with a hint of anger. Huh. Who might this Chanel be? Rogue asks with a raised eyebrow. Even Emery is intrigued, and she turns to Claire, then to Vani. "And what makes me so different?" Even she wasn't sure what he meant. Emery had always thought she was the same as the other Knights here.
[attr="class","dbody"]Claire gives a tap on the shoulder. "I believe in you," the woman simply says. The woman has to think about the question. She's no expert in history, though, and the question's kinda too hard to answer for Claire. So she remains quiet for a while, not wanting to disappoint Emery... until Vani intervenes and shoves Claire aside playfully.
"She doesn't know, that's it," Vani answers for her, and Claire just smiles slightly. "Yeah, I don't really know. It seems like I have more to study." The Adept Test doesn't really cover that portion of history, to which Claire is immensely thankful for. Books and history aren't really her cup of tea. Milk tea, preferably.
Vani seems to grow more comfortable around Emery. He takes part of the conversation with his deep, gravelly, yet strangely animated voice. He plops on the ground before speaking. "Oh, Chanel is a brat. She's the daughter of some rich family who got to become a Knight because of her family's influence. Claire here was hired to be her tutor, and guess what? She can't even perform a single Enchantment spell! How can she be so cocky with that level of ability, come on!"
He takes a pause as he considers the actual question. "Oh, uh, I don't really know. I guess you're more temperamental and respectful than Chanel. Not you, cat," he adds, looking at the feline rather distastefully.
