This is a big one! If you find anything wrong or poorly explained about the new & updated systems, please let me know![break][break]
there's a new header in the encyclopedia board which lists out what order to read the basic threads. Hopefully this will make things a bit less confusing for new members.[break][break]
the rules have been slightly updated so that making an IC thread outside of a city doesn't immediately count as a death enabled thread (honestly, I forgot that this was a rule we had). Any threads in the Eastern Wasteland (which is locked, for now) will still be automatically counted as death enabled, however.[break][break]
the plot & setting thread has also been updated in a few ways:
[break][break]
the affinity list thread has been combined to include ALL affinities instead of splitting them up by member-made and staff-made. Also, the affinity necromancy has been added (more info later in this post)!
[break][break]
the progression thread now includes a reference table at the bottom with a character's capabilities at each rank. The last three rows are new capabilities which will be explained a bit later in this update!
[break][break]
the npc list thread has had a makeover to contain a bit more information about each NPC (if publicly known), including their:
In addition, the dreamweaver NPC Thalia Vesper has been added to the list, as well as many minor NPCs. You'll even see a few entirely new faces!
[break][break]
the bestiary is here! It contains information on different magic-touched species of Salem, including creatures from other worlds (such as wraiths) or made from magic (such as crafted Tin Men). This is linked in the threads Extra: Monsters & Dangers of the Wilds as well as creation: beasts and monsters
[break][break]
Kiki's shop isn't the only store in town anymore! A marketplace sub-board had been made to hold all of the various places where your character can get items, and there's a header at the top so it's easier to jump between these locations.
[break][break]
There is now a new, searchable Spell List which you can use to find spells, items, or techniques you want to get at these new shop locations. It's sourcing its data directly from the old spell list Google Sheets document, so it's perfectly fine if you prefer that version.
[break][break]
"Companion" type items now exist. Companions are creatures or sentient constructs which can make decisions without input from a witch. They can be utilized in as many threads as you like, or none at all (similar to reusable items), but do not take up an item slot (similar to permanents). Note that you can only bring in 1 companion per thread. the inventory template has been updated slightly to accommodate this, by changing the "Familiar" title to "Familiars & Companions". The only spells which were updated to allow for the creation of companions are "Tin Man" (crafting), "The Marimo Series: Golem" (plantshaping), and the group of "Summoning Spirits" spells (summoning).

Kiki's little brother, Kai, has a workshop open for business! Here you can:

An odd tradehouse is being run far to the north of any major civilizations. It's quite the unusual place... nobody who goes there can ever remember the shopkeeper's name. Here you can:
[break][break]
Kiki has updated her business plan, meaning spells will be a bit cheaper, random trinket prices have been reduced, and there will no longer be a limited inventory. She also has a few new "special" items, which are outlined in the next section...
[break][break]
Necromancy is here, just in time for Spooktober! Thanks to the appearance of one mysterious necromancer at the end of the Empyreal Cup fiasco, this affinity is now at the forefront of many peoples' minds. Though much of the knowledge about its spells has been lost to the fires of persecution, some modern witches are beginning to dabble in this forbidden art. Since necromancy is 1) illegal 2) rare and 3) difficult to find information about, you will need to buy this affinity from Kiki's shop (similarly to Divination) if you wish for your character to learn it.
Characters can now have up to 2 elements and 4 affinities, which are also being sold as bonus abilities in Kiki's shop. These are a bit more rare, and thus pretty expensive!
Characters can now have magical beasts as familiars! Anything categorized as a "beast" in the bestiary is fair game (within reason... please don't make a full-sized burrowing duneworm... pls), and if you want something new, feel free to run it by staff so it can be added to the bestiary.
[break][break]
The Saturnalia Event is still going on, and will complete at the end of this year (even if it needs to be shortened a little bit to hit that deadline). The Main Event Page is here if you'd like to join in![break][break]
*NEW* The Starfall Inktober event board is up! This an an OOC event that will be running from October 1 thru November 2 [break][break]

the plot & setting thread has also been updated in a few ways:
- The various major site arcs now have a list of relevant events leading up to the current state of things. Thank you Lav for letting me use your timeline template ;o;
- In addition to the original arc counting sheep about the dreamweaver Thalia Vesper causing chaos in Sundial, the arc the stories we burned has also been added, and will be about re-discovering some secrets which had been expunged from Salem's history.
- The paragraph in the setting post which discusses technology in Salem now also mentions some non-magical technologies:
[break]"Non-magical technologies also exist, of course, to fill the gap that common magic doesn't fill: film cameras for capturing still images, railroads for transporting large quantities of material, radios for nonmagical communication and audible media, and vinyls and phonographs for listening to music. Guns and gunpowder have not yet been invented, and likely will not be, with magic as powerful as it is."

Kiki's little brother, Kai, has a workshop open for business! Here you can:
- Create and upgrade items from spells your character knows with the "SYN" hover
- Ask for items to be created or upgraded -- even for unique items which weren't made from a known spell!
- Analyze unique items -- sometimes you'll discover new functionality, site lore, or maybe a prompt for an adventure

[attr="class","item"]
NECROMANCER
PERMANENT - UNIQUE
35 AP | Enables your character to use necromancy, regardless of whether it was learned or their natural-born affinity. Note that necromancy is very much illegal in all major cities of Salem, and using it openly in these locations will result in consequences. This can fill any affinity spot.
Characters can now have up to 2 elements and 4 affinities, which are also being sold as bonus abilities in Kiki's shop. These are a bit more rare, and thus pretty expensive!
[attr="class","stafftempstore"]
[attr="class","item"]
THIRD AFFINITY
PERMANENT - UNIQUE
50 AP | Allows your character to learn a third affinity. The character must be at least adept rank to get this item and already have a second affinity.
[attr="class","item"]
FOURTH AFFINITY
PERMANENT - UNIQUE
75 AP | Allows your character to learn a fourth affinity. The character must be at least acolyte rank to get this item and already have a third affinity.
[attr="class","item"]
DUAL ELEMENTALIST
PERMANENT - UNIQUE
75 AP | Grants your character the ability to learn and use a second element. This can be achieved though their pre-existing familiar having control of two elements, or gaining a 2nd familiar. Note that only one familiar may be materialized at any given time. This may only be given to characters of novice rank and higher. Please include your desired element in the purchase request.
Characters can now have magical beasts as familiars! Anything categorized as a "beast" in the bestiary is fair game (within reason... please don't make a full-sized burrowing duneworm... pls), and if you want something new, feel free to run it by staff so it can be added to the bestiary.
[attr="class","stafftempstore"]
[attr="class","item"]
RARE FAMILIAR
PERMANENT - UNIQUE
30 AP | Allows your characters' familiar to have the shape of a magical beast. This only applies to one familiar if you have multiple, and the shape must already be in the bestiary under the "beast" category or discussed with staff. Creatures which have magical abilities should match your element, and will not grant you additional elemental techniques.
