Claire's family is a family of hunters living in the understory. She is the eldest of the five children, and so she learned to hunt very early on.[break][break]
Hunting came as a survival instinct to Claire's family. Their roots were traced to as far as Gale Valley, and so her ancestors were mostly farmers, with basic to intermediate knowledge of hunting. They were far from landlords, though, and their small plot of land was near the south hillocks. They ward off wraiths and monsters with their magic. Enchantment, Summoning, and Augmentation ran in the family, and this was so because of their predicament. The family suffered from double-peripherality, and it was only a matter of time before they were overwhelmed, either by harsh nature, fearsome beasts, or unfair power relations.[break][break]
Famine was spreading, and Claire's great-great-grandparents knew. They knew they won't survive the next drought, so they sold their land for a few bags of gold, and moved. [break][break]
How they ended up in Eclipse Town is a mystery, still. It's something that hasn't been passed down the generations. The first few weeks the family were nomads, and as drought came it proved lesser still to survive that way. They first decided to take chances in the Mirrorlight Metropolis--but they couldn't adapt. Their simplistic rural life simply cannot match the modern way of the megacity. They seek shelter in the shades of abandoned buildings at day and scavenged at night. Their children became beggars. Their parents worked the dirtiest jobs. Starvation was imminent. During those times the family lost their two youngest members. [break][break]
Stories say that two years of living the lowliest life in the metropolis, they boarded a wagon--and slept and ate there for three days. The buildings faded in the distance, and when they woke the next day they were under towering trees. The forest was far from the fertile fields or from the huge skyscrapers, but it was the right place. Hunting gave them a head start, and so they were able to settle in the understory with relative ease. Hunting and farming combined gave them a head start. They hunted exotic beasts and kill wraiths per requests. They learned the scarce vegetation and made it work for their own. They were one of the few who can grow crops on the understory, and the place was no stranger to thievery and foolery. In no time the family was absorbed into a life measured by brute strength, to which Claire thrived.[break][break]
The girl enjoyed wrestling her brothers. The teenager enjoyed picking fights with kids on the alley. The woman wrapped her chest in tight cloth, wore her gear, and headed to outskirts of the town. She would come back with blood-stained hands. To make sure the creature was dead, she would rip off its head from the body and let the blood drip on the snow. [break][break]
Everything was fine and dandy, as much as it can be in the middle of Eclipse Town, however, there was just one irregularity. Whenever Claire's father left, usually for a few weeks, Claire was told that he received a special request to hunt a deadly monster. But Claire was no more ignorant. A knife would never kill a beast, regardless of how much you augment your technique or your strength. And cloaks were useless against a wraith. She asked so many times, but she never received an answer. Or she did, but somehow she knew they were all lies. [break][break][break]
The High Priestess stood outside of her reinforced cell. Claire didn't see that she was looking at her like she's the lowest scum on earth. [break][break]
Claire didn't bother to answer, feeling too hot to think. Her mind was melting. There was heat rising from the ground. It's in the middle of being a cozy sauna to a burning cauldron. Hot, so hot. She tried to call Vani, to make him appear to cool the place. Cold, cold, she didn't need warmth. But her head was empty and there was no voice except her thoughts. Eventually, those, too, faded away. Her consciousness was starting to slip. She panted hard. Thirsty. So thirsty.[break][break]
The High Priestess pointed her wand to the lock, and with a zap of mana, burst the lock open. Claire only heard a loud pop, and the sound of bars raising. She looked up. She can't see very well in the middle of the haze. Medeia Trevil knelt in front of her. She stuck something cold on Claire's left chest, on her wet rag of a shirt. It woke Claire up, snapped her back.[break][break]

Dirty White on Pale Skin
climax
"What happened?"[break][break]
"Your father is dead."[break][break]
"Your father is dead."[break][break]
Silence. [break][break]
"Did a bear kill him?"[break][break]
"No, he isn't a beast."[break][break]
"No, he isn't a beast."[break][break]
Sky blue eyes on cerulean. [break][break]
"He...?"[break][break]
Claire had never been afraid of a man before. Not until she saw the bloodshot eyes, bony face, and two sharp fangs. The man dropped on all fours, and Claire decided he was an animal. Not even a human. Not a scum. She trembled all along, even as her legs give up on her, she didn't stop trembling. Her body shivered so hard, yet her grip on the knife didn't let go. She breathed shallow, cold steam exhaled from her parted mouth and runny nose. There was no reason for her to keep holding on to the blade. Glassy eyes, bloodied lips, wounds all over her body, yet they were all nothing compared to the body before her--motionless, laying in a way that wasn't meant for the living. Claire tried to remember so hard. But there was nothing to remember. [break][break]
The doors to the icy chamber opened. Claire, too weak to protest, was blindfolded again. She couldn't walk--too many emotions at once rendered her legs useless. Someone touched her and she cringed so hard. Her face felt wet. [break][break]
Her father was dead, and she did well in his place. She now understood what the cloaks and knives are for. Still didn't know who or why or for whom. It's not to slay a beast but to put a soul in peace, right after the young woman made them puke their guts out. There was blood on her hands and she wiped it clean on the snow.[break][break][break]
