Heath can only really turn his head towards Zephyr when he announces something approaching before something stabs into him. Sinclair yowls something akin to a curse before the feeling of weakness and exhaustion flushes over the pair of them. Sinclair fades into the astral while Heath drops to the ground. At the edges of his vision he sees eyes, and nothing else but a sense of foreboding. Fear puts his heart in a vice grip before he trails off into slumber.
He reawakens groggy and confused. The thumping of drums replaces his own heartbeat and as he regains consciousness he notes vaguely their target, truly exists. Realization that he has his story, pushes excitement through his veins and he quickly blinks the sleep out of his eyes to take in the details of the hybrid as much as possible so he could recreate with his own tools. He reached towards his fashionable, always in style, fanny pack of holding only to feel a tug on his wrists. Then, the fear from before began bubbling up as he took in their current situation. Fuck. FUCk!!
Heath’s eyes only widen to aa panic as he looks over at his companions and then finally turns his neck towards Billy- Just in time to see that sneaky fuck leap into action. Magic goes flying and he can sort of feel a subtle manipulation to the flora around them. He makes no move to help them and Heath can only roll his eyes at his friend. Show off as always. “Sinclair, let’s get going.” He tells the grumpy coati as Sinclair shakes himself into existence a few feet away. His tail flicks from side to side and his spine bristles with ice. A cluster of bird like icicles manifest just above his tail swirling in time with the motions of his tail before there’s a sharp flick and the cluster breaks into two. The Storm of Swallows positions itself in two groups, one just high enough for the witches’ wrists, and the other for their feet before flying forward and slashing through hemp ropes.
The pinkette felt his ropes slacken before testing them and with a sharp few tugs managed to snap them completely. He drops to his feet to make quick work of his feet before setting his sights on the lizard and the crow that was starting to shriek and hiss in alarm and anger at Billy Dr. Puddy. His eyes go to the lizardman conducting the ritual, his prize from this godforsaken stunt in the swamp. Heath concentrated mana in his palm before forcing up a Barrier between the altar and the crow to keep them at bay while they dispersed. He had little time to see or even care how much a slowly growing mass of vine and bramble does and instead goes straight for the knife wielding Lizardman. Arms up, breath in, brief thoughts on the disgusting monstrosity that was the leech mass, and out juts his right arm as he twists his torso to give it the oomph it needed as he aimed a strike right into the jaw with bloodied fists. “You speak English, bug breath? I need to know you understand how badly you fucked up here.” He snaps at the lizard, taking care not to step into the ring of fungi that had somehow sprouted up. Or if he did, to remember to move out of it.

[attr="class","gearcore"] Zephyr's broom swerves as he feels the dart pierce the back of his neck. Though he yanks it out immediately, he can see that something had been smeared on the tip, and feel it starting to dull his consciousness. Spock screams furiously as metal spears burst from the ground around the trees where the dart was likely shot from, while Zephyr's thoughts race. Was this poison? What could anyone here even do against poison?
Despite his best efforts to remain conscious, his grip on his broom weakens, and the last thing he remembers is falling just before the world faded into nothingness...
---
He's lucky he doesn't wake up with a broken neck. Honestly, he's lucky he wakes up at all. Even so, when he shifts his body (or, tries to), he immediately notices a few unfortunate details:
His arms are bound behind his back, anchoring him to a wooden pole
His skin is drenched halfway with swampy muck
His prosthetic legs are gone
He transitions from grogginess to alertness in an instant, eyes snapping open and body jolting upright. There's a lizardman standing in front of them -- a lizardman cultist? The crafter isn't entirely sure, hasn't entirely processed-- But the ritual (and, perhaps more importantly, Billy) is moving with or without him.
"Spock?" he asks across the mental link with his familiar. She was always his first concern.
"Present." Her tone of thought was bristling, itching to raise hell.
"We gotta save enough mana for a return trip -- Hang back for a while?" He suggests, knowing that flat demands would get him nowhere with her. Spock is mostly silent in response, but Zephyr understood enough of her mental undertones to be positive that she begrudgingly agreed. Though he saw a bag of some of their items across the ritual clearing, he didn't see his prosthetics or broom among them. Considering he had no idea how far they were from the boundary of the swamp, he was a bit concerned over whether he'd be able to make it back.
Ah, but he was getting ahead of himself. First things first: getting out of these binds.
Though he could worm his way out himself, it would have been less subtle and more time consuming than Spock's solution of untying the hand binds with some Hands of Gaia. The hands probably looked like some sort of swamp monster rising from the earth as they fiddled with the crafter's restraints, though he tried to block the crowd's view of them as much as possible with the rest of his body. Considering the distance between Sprocket and her witch as she skirted the edge of the crowd, she did an admirable job with loosening the bindings enough for Zephyr to slip free. He immediately yanks the cloth from his mouth, then gets to work untying Caleb while his other companions are busy distracting the lizard man.
Although the villagers don't run outright, they hastily back up, keeping a healthy distance between the action and themselves. A few offer assistance through some weak offensive spells aimed at the sudden ring of mushrooms, but don't dare interfere with the witches at its center. As the first few light beams reach the ground from Dr Puddy's technique, the lizard man makes a quick, deliberate motion with his arms and the technique is turned to harmless dust. [break][break] Heath manages to sneak in a successful punch while the lizard man was distracted by the other's spell, causing him to stagger, but not fall. "Have I?" he replies to the question, accent thick, just before a giant water monitor (easily reaching the height of Heath's shoulders while on all fours) appears between Heath and the lizard man. The beast's long tail sweeps across a significant portion of the fairy ring just before hissing and summoning a burst of shadow tendrils to grab keep the pugilist at a distance.
[attr="class","victoriousscroll"]The ropes are not tight enough to secure them, but it's doing its purpose very clearly; a few tugs and he could probably get out of these stupid ropes. Problem was, he wants to get out now. Caleb is not amused with this whole ordeal this Lizardman has to offer; he was probably getting annoyed with how much trouble he's actually getting them now.
He could see Zephyr from the corner of his eye, and his eyes widen once he looks at the blonde's legs. He could sign and ask where they had gone, but the bindings make it impossible. He simply looks at him with a worried look while he is being helped to untying the ropes. But he couldn't say anything about it.
Aria? He calls out to his familiar, and in a flash she appears before him, perched on his shoulder, already pecking and biting on the ropes to set it free. My, my, master, look what you four have got yourselves into. She says with a disapproving tone, whilst continuing to unbind the ropes that trap him on the pole.
While they are at it, he looks on to the scene happening before him. Both Heath and the raven-haired man seem to be doing some things to at least distract the lizard man, but it looks like the cryptid has protected himself already with that water barrier. As he looks on, he glares intently at the cryptid. Right now there is nothing he can do, but once he's out of here he'll be sure to get a piece of their minds.

This wasn't some strange magical creature. This was a witch. It had to be... or something very close to that. Normal creatures could not use magic. Or at least magic like this. Turning mana into dust was to the best of his knowledge... outside of the realm of realistic. Even for a lizard man. He has heard of creatures or wraiths using something like spells but not like this. Things like shooting fire balls or darkness tendrils. Well. Disappointing. "Witch huh... well that's disappointing..." he said to himself. He was sure the lizard man was a witch and not a cryptid. How annoying. Now he had nothing to mount on his wall.
On the plus side Heath's distraction allowed him to grab his bag of tricks. He threw one of his Sonic potions down towards the lizard hoping for it to hit the ground and create some kind of sound so they could have another opening. It seemed like the crowd was trying to help the thing by disrupting his sleeping spell which was... well annoying. He did not enjoy this fight as much as he should because of them. Dr Puddy was also not happy with her spell turning into dust. She would try again while they attempted to distract the lizard with another Gate of Heaven at the crowd. This time she would use more power because she was annoyed.
There was darkness magic being used. The perfect thing would of course be to shed some light on this. He pointed the palm of his hand outward using Single Shot aiming not for the lizard man but at the shadowy tendrils that were aiming for his fellow jester. So by his estimation that meant darkness element and transfiguration magic. It would explain why he looked like a beast as well as his ability to turn spells to dust. Mana to dust was after all a pretty powerful spell they had up their arsenal. He'd never seen it in person... at least that he remembers but he for sure remembers that spell existing. Also a guy in their coven for sure uses that magic to be like a furry or something... excuse me cat girl.
He would not use fairy circle again yet so as to conserve his mana reserves. It was best used when the time was right... preferably with another witch who could use plant magic. Hence why he was attempting to save Heath. He knew for a fact that the man could use plant magic... but not sure if he knew this spell. Well it was worth a shot if nothing else.
[attr="class","gearcore"] "Try t' get out of sight," Zeph whispers to Caleb the moment he finishes unbinding the Jester's constraints. Having been raised by Fane in his late childhood and early teens, the crafter had learned a lot about the Helios Knights' strongest members and supporters; the abilities of Rowenna Shepard, in particular, had given him a healthy fear over facing any strong transfigurer head-on.
Silently thanking Billy for being so goddamn flashy, the crafter follows his own advice by casting a quick spell in the midst of the surrounding chaos and vanishing in a cloud of navy smoke. He reappears on a roof of one of the village huts, on the side facing away from the battle. Out of sight, he opens his atheneum interface and tries to re-establish contact with his Yatagarasu model. At the same time, he pulls up some maps from the Wi-stor databases to figure out where the hell they were. He doubted the village would leave them any time to collect and orient themselves before leaving, and Zephyr, at the very least, wanted to make their escape in the correct direction.
Meanwhile, from the concealment of Zephyr's bag at the edge of the ritual area, Sprocket was quite pleased to see the lizardman's summon was so big. Big targets meant she had lots of surface area to stab. Calling up a garden of thin, metal spears directly beneath the monitor lizard, she hopes to make the beast suffer. (And distract it from attacking Heath... but mostly for the suffering.)
The lizard man, briefly stunned and recoiling from Billy's sonic bomb, cannot focus enough to turn Dr. Puddy's second gate of heaven to dust. The villagers begin to scatter, fleeing towards shelter or beyond the edge of the attack. The water monitor, though also partially stunned by the jarring noise, spins around in defense of its master, slapping Heath with its oversized tail with enough force to break a few bones and send him flying away in the process. The combined distance from its own shadow and Billy's light magic, however, weaken the shadow tendrils enough to be dispelled. [break][break] Shaking his head in an attempt to regain focus, the lizard man begins chanting a spell under his breath and eyeing Billy with a dangerous glare. A few moments later, the alchemist would find himself transformed into a small, non-venomous snake. Moments later, however, he shouts in alarm as Spock's spears pierce through the giant monitor's feet and the lizard-man's hands begin bleeding as if they'd been pierced by dozens of needles.

The tendrils latched onto him and he recognized the move from his fights in the Empyreal Cup. Though, that revelation fell to the wayside as the lizardman summoned his familiar of all things. He’s faking his role! Sinclair snarled, rage boiling throughout his and Heath’s connection at the realization that they had simply wandered into the trap of a disgusting wretch of a witch, not a real lizard hybrid. “Yes-” is all he can say with the hint of a grin before the water monitor slaps him to the fucking ground. He’s not expecting it, really. Too focused on the realization that he was a human. Deluded or not, this was a killer story and he was intent on taking the fucker alive and prisoner. Heath lands abruptly, vaguely spinning out but this turns out to be a bad decision as he smacks hi chest into stone.
It hurts and its slow to spread but it HURTS. And For a brief moment, Heath’s breathing is shallow and quick as deep inhales are impeded by the sharp bursts of pain. Sinclair writhes at a distance. That way more painful than just a bruise. Fuck. He sits up holding his chest weakly and turned just in time to see Billy’s form shrink into a serpent. “God- f-” he cuts himself off as he clutched his own chest and activated Iced Out. Frost and ice spread over his shirt, cooling the hurt area. Ice glittered as it formed over his ears in a thin layer before increasing until it took the form of earmuffs but without the band. He wouldn’t be able to hear but at the moment, the lizard witch was too dangerous to have witty banter with. He’d supply the dialogue all on his own.
Adrenaline pumping through him, he prays they don’t like the cold, being lizards and all but he doubted that was really the case given the variety of familiars. Still, the master was part lizard. Maybe. He closes in, guard up once more, quickly taking the deepest inhale he possibly can even while wincing. He exhales what appears to be a howl of ice and cold air jet streams towards the witch and familiar pair. With Billy down and Caleb and Zeph taking more supportive roles form the looks of it, he’d have to help keep the witch in check while Billy….slithered back to his old self? How did that magic even work? Whatever the case he sets to isolating the priest- shaman- whatever the hell he was. Pushing Sinclair for mana, the pair erect a ring not of shrooms, but ice spikes Spiked In. The move takes a bit more of mana than he’d like but he didn’t think any of his plantshaping would be useful at the moment. He’d have to rely on his element and his fists for now.
There’s no time to catch his breath as he goes in once more this time sliding past the water monitor while Spock’s spears distract the pair. He forces himself into the witch’s line of sight, snarling as he tries to pick up where he left off. “By any chance would you like to be interviewed for the Sundial Times?” he spits out as he aims his left fist toward the lizardman’s chest. The fist doesn’t make contact, a fake. Instead Heath steps in and uses his right for a tilted uppercut as he tries to strike the witch’s throat.

So this is what its like to work for Fane. Oops he shouldn't think that so loudly she might be able to hear him. Well... of course she couldn't but still better safe than sorry. After all that one was here as well. Oopsie. Back to the fight.
Well now that he didn't have arms or legs his spell casting abilities would be limited. He couldn't use most of his plantshaping magic and drawing a circle would take to long... and so far the only circle he knew was for healing injuries which would not help them at this second. Maybe later. Dr Puddy could be of great use though. The serpent and familiar would make their way to each other with the now tiny Billy slithering around his feline like he was riding her. TRANSFORM!!!!
Okay but like that wasn't a thing he could actually do. He could however still use some magic his familiar could not so it was time to go after the familiar. The witch seemed to be the focus of Heath so he and Puddy would go for the familiar to stop it from interfering with its darkness magic. The snake Billy didn't have hands so he was relying on Dr Puddy to move him so he could move. Given their small size the two would use Stairyway to Heaven in order to move around both familiar and witch. This allows for quick on the fly movement in various directions as well as the ability to drop potions on people like a bomber. After all since they can't throw the potion doesnt mean they cant drop it from their mouths.
Which is exactly what the two would do from higher up. Here comes some flames with an aquapyre potion that snake billy is carrying. Dr Puddy would naturally use her cat like reflexes to move them away from it and even shoot a Single Shot out of her mouth to try and make sure the potion ruptured to do damage. Hopefully the potion would spread quickly so it would be hard for them to disrupt the magic with transfiguration. Once it spread it was very hard to control. Besides it was a good cover for escape.
[attr="class","victoriousscroll"]As Caleb observes from the distance while Billy and Heath try to battle the "creature" in front of them, it becomes quite clear that it wasn't a "creature" at all. The Lizardman simply behaves like any normal witch; it's no cryptid at all!
It's just a normal alchemist who goes against them. And that's something he really dislikes about this mission now.
It admittedly caught him off guard, though. And he signed up for this mission in the first place.
Zephyr finally unties him and tells him to get out of the scene while they try to stop the lizardman; he nods, but a sigh finds itself out of his mouth soon after. He should probably get out of the way of the much more stronger witches for now; they could handle a situation like this as clear as day, after all.
He tries making a cut through the pathway where most people had fled, his target of place through the trees that surround the area, while the other males keep him busy. Hopefully he wouldn't be caught by the monster fleeing this way, but it was most unlikely; the area they were situated at was open as day. Anything could possibly be seen around here.
From a short distance, he looks on as Heath is turned into a snake and notices that the spears Spock had hit the water barrier with had cause the alchemist pain; his hands were quite bloody after the sudden impact.
Smirking, he stops from his tracks and closes his eyes. Aria is beside him and does the same; a sudden surge of mana suddenly whips around them like a strong wind.
A Wind Dragon Bullet is suddenly summoned, and Caleb directs it towards the water barrier. If the attempt fails, he would just have to run off and try to find a way to help the other witches get out of there.
These bois need to keep themselves safe ;_; what have you four gotten into

[attr="class","gearcore"] The view from his Yatagarasu model flickers to life, albeit smudged with swamp water that had splashed into its eyes. "Please fly, please fly..." the crafter silently pleads, unsure how much damage the machine had sustained. It makes a few uncertain movements, undoubtedly more clunky than before, but does manage to lift itself off the ground. From what Zeph could tell, its surrounding's hadn't changed, so it hadn't been moved. Good -- he marked an estimation of where it landed on his atheneum interface map, along with the location where they'd first entered the swamp. One interesting change, however, was that his broom was also lying nearby his Yatagarasu. Whoever had tranquilized the party must have grabbed it with the rest of their items, but decided it was too much of a hassle to carry and instead discarded it on their way back to the village. And that meant Zeph had a clear direction to send the robotic bird to search; he inputs instructions into his interface for the bird to grab his broom and start flying above the trees.
For a moment, he dares to peer around the roof of the hut to get a look at the situation. The oversized familiar was pinned, Heath was standing back up, Caleb was running, and Billy was... gone?
"Got turned into a snake," Spock offers helpfully.
"Fuck this swamp..." is all Zeph mentally mutters in reply.
Looking to the stars, he checks for familiar constellations so he could orient himself (yet another skill he'd learned from Fane) and get out of here. As he spots the cluster of stars he's searching for, he also sees a flutter of bird's wings. Eyes darting back to his interface, he confirms that it is, in fact, his bird. Good, they weren't too far out. Yatagarasu begins to dive at its creator's command, dropping the broom above Zephyr for him to catch, and then outstretching its talons as it curves its trajectory and aims straight for the lizardman's eyes.
The lizardman shouts something in an obscure language, and it seems to prompt many of the villagers to grab weapons and run out from their shelters. At Heath's approach, he casts yet another spell, albeit weaker than his previous ones due to his damaged hands, turning both of Heath's arms into the short, squishy tentacles of a dumbo octopus. "Sundial is a city of lies," he hisses as he follows up the spell with a deep slash to Heath's gut with the sacrificial dagger. [break][break] The water monitor familiar makes an attempt to bat away the dropped potion from Billy with its tail, but Dr. Puddy's single shot shatters the vial before it has that chance. Both it and the lizardman scream as the familiar is consumed by fire, which only grows larger with Caleb's wind dragon bullet feeding the flames. The familiar vanishes back to its native plane to prevent further damage, but even then, it was a suitable enough distraction for Zephyr's mechanical crow to swoop in and gouge out the lizardman's eyes. Injured and enraged, he tears the machine away from him and fully breaks it.

Fuck this guy its time for more fire. The flames eat away at the area in front of them. They are just begging to spread... to consume the whole town. Billy and Dr Puddy are ones that are more than happy to comply. Body counts will hopefully be high. Kill them all and let their ashes scatter to the winds.
The lizard witch slashes at Heath and turns his arms into tentacles like some bad hentai game is being played. A metal bird thing comes for the eyes. They can see the bleeding. The blood is quite... pretty to look at. The whole town should be painted that way. Well time to finish this fight and burn this town to the ground. Sure the goal was to find proof but this would probably suffice. Get rid of the imposters.
The feline familiar creates more footholds of light jumping around as close as she can to being above the now injured witch. The pair make their move, dropping three vials as close to the injured lizard witch as possible using Single Shot again to try and rain flames down upon the witch below as well as add fire to the flames already in motion hoping to spread it through the town later. Aquaypyre was notoriously hard to control once it went wild.
The cat familiar would then make its move towards Heath. They should move and regroup. Transfiguation magic made it harder to fight as well as hoping that possibly time or distance would help weaken the magic. He doubted it but it was better than nothing. Besides he needed some time to do any healing magic and that was very hard to do in the middle of a raging battle.
The cat would probably land somewhere near the ice witch on her little light square and stare at him. "We should regroup and leave. We do not know if they have others coming and given the transfiguration it would not be a fight in our favor." The cat was right. Even when they defeated this transfiguring witch it didn't mean the magic would end. That and the amount of witches around would be a hinderance even if they weren't very strong. Strength in numbers can topple even the mightiest of witches. Even those like the Knight Queen or the Mirage Serpent. After all eventually everything fell to ashes wouldn't it?
[attr="class","gearcore"] The villagers seemed to be getting over their initial fear of Billy's spell power, which posed a problem since the four cryptid-hunting witches were significantly outnumbered. With the lizard man (hopefully) blinded, there was no point in waiting around to escape. Zephyr mounts his broom, prays its handle isn't split anywhere, and pushes himself off the roof. He wobbles a bit at first and wishes he still had his legs to help with the balance, but, thankfully, the broom still flies.
With Caleb already running and Dr. Puddy (and snake-Billy, the crafter could only assume) jumping around on suspended platforms of light, Zeph's first concern was Heath, who, last he checked, had been fighting the lizardman head-on.
"Heath got stabbed, by the way," Spock mentions in their mindspace.
"WHAT?"
His concern was suddenly multiplied. Wasting no time, his broom zooms over to Heath. He creates one large Hand of Gaia to grab the lizardman and pull him back, away from Heath and towards the area of spears and fire. "Get on -- I'm not fightin' a whole fuckin' village," he says, lowering himself to a more convenient height. He eyes the reporter's injury with visible concern -- he wasn't sure they'd be able to make it back to a city without treating it first.
If Heath didn't comply, Zeph would forcefully grab him around the ribs and start flying away anyway.
"Caleb! Turn left!" Zeph shouts to the Jester as he himself begins flying in the same direction, towards the nearest way out of this awful swamp. He flies past Dr. Puddy, and hopes they follow.
"Grab some potions," the crafter asks his familiar in a rush.
"Already done," she replies as she flies up beside Zeph and Heath. she had taken one of her spears and used lift on it so that it flew like a broom, then slung the witches' discarded bags overtop.

The sounds are muffled, but the magic still took it effect. Transfiguration didn’t need him to hear the weird chants to take effect. Shit. He really did not how to combat this aside from what they’d already been trying which was just, raw overpowering. They wouldn’t have much time for that though. Or at least, Heath’s time was pretty much up. As his arms transmographied into fat octopus tentacle and sagged in the air, the lizard man leaned in with that. It was hard to hear but he could make out some sort of hatred he supposed for Sundial, before a dagger was plunged into his torso. The pain was so sharp and sudden is made Sinclair drop to the ground, and as the weapon was pulled back Heath felt a few gags as he almost threw up from the pain. He slapped his tentacles onto his stomach praying to the gods that if he had to hold his own intestines in that he at least didn’t SEE it.
Thankfully the attacks on his opponent take over for now and he’s given the briefest respite as he stumbled back against one of the ice spikes he’d used to cage the other witch. “You IDIOT!” Sinclair howled as he escaped into the astral plane, unable to continue moving quickly. Still, he doubted that helped much. He had never been afraid or disgusted by octopus before, but after getting stabbed and pulling away his limbs to see small suckers coated in his own blood, he felt the urge to gag once more and bile rose in his throat.
His clothes were stained and wet, and he felt so fucking hot for whatever reason. As the screams of the lizard man rang out and the fire bellowed around them. He was shocked really, the lingering fury from before snuffed out with ease. When Dr. Puddy stopped near him he took a look over at Billy in snake form, snickering lightly at how fitting it was before processing the advice. Right, this was a bad situation. Clearly. Zephyr seemed to agree, appearing to interpose between himself and the lizard man and offer a way to bail. “R-Right.” The reporter said with a quick nod as he hopped on, hissing as pulled away his tentacles from his gut for a panicky 4 seconds before replacing one on the gash and using the other to cling to his savior. He then eyed Spock who had taken care of their belongings. Oh good. “I think I have some saltines in mine, Spock. For the nausea.” He managed, as he began to pant, his breathing getting heavier and heavier now that there was some relief to the adrenaline packed fight.
