this is Salem, a land filled with magic and maladies. It is a place where witches and their elemental familiars gather, a home to legend and
lore that predates time itself. Yet of all the wicked and wonderful stories the past can tell us of, the most magical are the ones yet to happen.
This is Salem - this is the start of your very own journey. Welcome to starfall
Starfall is an animaga witch roleplay set in mostly modern times. Members play as witches in a world plagued by monsters, where the only safe spots are walled cities. Starfall strives to be a character-driven roleplay with expansive lore and a highly interactive plotline. We want to allow members to
create and look back on a magical journey, and mold the site and its plot as their characters grow.

the decision is clear, the way forward laid out clearly at their feet: they need to move inwards, into the eye of the storm, lest they fall prey to the vacuum outside it. so inwards is how they move, saskia leaning heavily against luci all the while. optimism grips her tighter with every step, and she is thinking that perhaps, things will be okay after all -- there is something that sounds so much like an explosion that she ducks, instinctive and defensive. and then she watches, aghast, as the building shifts, slides, falls.
she shrieks, wordless, part panic and part horror; for a moment, she is frozen, rooted to the ground in a second of sheer terror. before she truly registers what she is doing, saskia is moving, dragging luci along with her, heedless of the thin air and the tight feeling in her chest. all sense of self-preservation is discarded.
the ruined building slumps against the street like a defeated beast, and saskia makes a beeline straight for it. she hovers at the edge, hesitates, spins around. cries out, her voice strained, "help, please! there's still someone inside!"
is anyone coming? is anyone helping? some continue their dart towards the center, and she cannot fault them. luci, a growl rumbling in her chest even as she lumbers forward to help, is less than agreeable towards this plan. still, saskia is her witch, stupidity and all. the bear claws at the mess that was formerly old woman josie's little trinket store, dragging aside loose bricks and splintered wood. saskia mirrors her, uncaring of how it stings her hands.
[attr="class","victoriousscroll"]He was simply going about his day, walking around Downtown Sundial with Aria flying behind his back. But suddenly a normal day was ruined when something similar to an earthquake happened. Only it wasn't like any earthquake at all; it made the streets crack, it made buildings topple down. And mana was being sucked out of the air like some deity was operating a vacuum cleaner.
And then the next thing he knew, a member of the Helios Knights approached him and asked to move people he were to meet to the medical station that they were going to have.
Before they were to go to downtown and direct as many people as they can to the Knights medical station, he was given an enchanted necklace; it's ability to protect Caleb and those near him from the mana-deprived area should help him in this mission. He had heard that another person was given a similar necklace so the work would be faster, but he couldn't care about that right now. He still has a mission to complete; and a dangerous one at that.
Now he has spent 30 minutes of the day making sure that people were out of the mana-deprived area and directing them to the medical station to be examined by the Knights. Even if he knew that most people were going to be safe at this point, something in his gut was telling him that there are still a few people trapped in this place.
"Help, please! There's still someone inside!" Someone called out from the foggy area he was in.
Looks like he was right after all.
He dashed for the direction of the voice. They certainly looked like they were in trouble. Or rather, someone else is in trouble and they wanted to let someone else know. The young man looked around some more, since the area was getting quite foggy from all the dust emitted by the fallen buildings, but he knew they were somewhere here.
Then he saw it. Red hair that belonged to the panicked young woman in front of a fallen store. Caleb ran up to the woman and faced the fallen building. Someone else was here, according to her. Whipping his head at Aria, he instructed the eagle to keep the girl company while he ran off to save whoever person was in there. He removed the enchanted necklace and swung it hurriedly around the girl's neck, before disappearing into the dusty fog.
Aria let out a sigh before turning to the girl, a serious expression on her face. Alright girl, calm down. We are going to get you out of here. Let's just hope my master is going to find whoever person is in the building before he is sucked out of breath. She stated, turning her head left and right. Tell me, aside from the person buried in this building, are there any other people here who weren't situated to safety yet?

"Oh, of course! Let me know what I can do to help," the white-robed merchant says to the Knight who was organizing an emergency medical station, their tone laced with concern (ingenuine, but trained to sound otherwise). In reality, Raz just wanted to go home and take a nap. They didn't care about these people personally, but they also didn't want to have the public image of someone who simply walked away from a tragedy where they could have helped. Plus, the Knight was handing out mana-restoring jewelry, and (although they refused to publicly admit it) Raz's ability to retain and control their mana was incredibly weak. It'd even be a challenge for them to stay conscious on their walk home without any magical assistance.
So, they decided to help. Hopefully they wouldn't be needed for long... or get any blood on their clothes... or get too much public recognition if anyone died. That'd be a pain to deal with.
Raz enters the scene after the store collapses, with witches on the street still struggling to stand or confined to a small mana-filled area. What a pain. The merchant hurries to the confined witches first, lifting the small pendant on the necklace draped around his shoulders for them to see. "This is creating a field of mana. Please follow me, and we'll help everyone get out of here." There were no complaints.
The next person they went to was an unconcious merchant. Since the poor man couldn't protest, Raz asked their small group of rescued people to bring along his hand cart. One used for flowers, they'd use it to bring as many people as they could in a single trip. Much to small Raziel's relief, one of the stronger men in the group took charge of pulling the cart without prompting.
When the merchant then approaches the group by the collapsed storefront, they're armed with these able helpers and a solution for transporting the many collapsed witches. Ah, but the other witch who'd been given a necklace was there as well. "Do you need any help? I can take anyone who wants to go back to the medical station, away from this mana deprivation."
The enchanted necklaces help the fledgelings and those around them easily navigate through the mana-deprived area, and, now, even the area beyond the necklaces' influence has become more manageable. Those who were more skilled in the magical arts would find it merely a discomfort, and fledgelings and apprentices would find it draining and tiring at worst, like the sensation of standing in the sun on a too-hot summer's day, but without the heat. Those who are able begin to help those who'd fallen unconcious.
[break][break]The collapsed store, luckily, appears to have remained mostly intact. Though there are some splintered beams and stony rubble on the ground, saskia burovski and Luci make quick work of it, soon reaching a half-broken window of the storage attic. It was large enough for a person to climb through... if they were willing to risk the store giving in completely and collapsing on top of them.
[break][break] Further down, iolani kótsyfas can see movement through the first floor (now-basement) window. A humanoid figure within the building slowly and silently stands up in the dim light. They seem to be struggling, pressing a hand against the window for support, leaving dark streaks (were they crimson? It's so difficult to tell in the dark) as it slipped on the smooth surface before catching itself on the frame.

there are scrapes on her palms, crimson staining dusty bricks; her eyes are focused on the clearing of the rubble and little else, so naturally, the necklace that suddenly makes its way around her neck comes as somewhat of a surprise. she rears back, eyes wild, hands raised, heartbeat thudding in her throat. the bear mirrors her actions, her great form swiveling with more grace and dexterity than expected as she regards an eagle familiar.
"no, no, i'm fine," she says, indignant, spine straightening and shoulders pulling back. saskia inhales sharply, exhaling through gritted teeth, one hand clutching the enchanted necklace. already, she can feel the draining effects ebbing. some unnamed emotion wells up, rises bitter in her throat and narrows her eyes. there are people who need this more than her. "your master should have taken this with him."
"everyone else is outside, they're being helped, i think," she informs the eagle. contrary to popular belief, the danger of entering this building is not unknown to her. but there is guilt that moves her hands, a voice that tells her she should have helped old woman josie escape with them sooner instead of running off on her own. "well, uh, have a good day."
saskia steps in through the half-broken window, and luci vanishes back into the familiar plane. her steps light and cautious, painfully aware of the ceiling hanging above her that could collapse at any moment, she begins to work her way downwards, in search of both old woman josie and the boy who had given her this necklace.
[attr="class","victoriousscroll"]The female hawk listens as the girl tells her she was fine, then states that Caleb should've brought the necklace with him. She sighs and silently agrees with her. Yes. He should've. She thought, turning to where her master had disappeared into. But, he's stubborn this way.
Then the girl informs her that the other people are safe for now, being rescued by other witches. Aria nods in acknowledgement, turning to the exit. Well, if the rest of the company have been saved, then the only ones to get out of this building are this girl, her master, Caleb, and the other person who had been trapped here according to the girl.
"Well, have a good day," This statement alerts her like lightning, and before the girl and bear even leaves, she flies over to them hurriedly. I'll come with you both. I have a master to search for as well as the other person, she told them, then flies over with the girl and the bear as they pass through a window.
Master, where have you gone now?
-^*^-
Caleb lifts a couple of beams and tosses them to the side, then searches through the rubble for the other person still trapped in the building. They should be here, possibly hidden underneath the rubble, unconscious or... even...
...No. They wouldn't be dead, would they?
He continues to search through the rubble and coughs momentarily. The fog and dust seems to have an effect on him now, but then he shouldn't give up. He was stubborn that way.
His now scraped hands continue to lift more beams and toss them into the corners of the room, then he digs through the rubble to try to find any mop of hair or sign of a lying person. The search could not be disrupted. Now he was wondering what Aria was doing with the girl. Were they searching themselves?
Suddenly he heard distant sounds coming from behind him, making him turn. Who were they? Were there other witches searching right now? Or was that Aria and the girl coming in to search?
...He shouldn't be worrying about that right now.
Caleb was searching for someone and he had to get over with it.

Raziel witnesses the other necklace-bearer and, then, a fire-haired girl enter into the collapsed shop. The merchant-Knight is not blind to the danger of the situation, nor are they the only one who notices.
"Should we help them..?" asks one of the witches who'd been stuck in the eye of the storm not too long ago. Raziel imagines that filling the unstable structure with more people would just cause more trouble and chaos. And yet -- simply turning a blind eye wasn't an acceptable response either. How inconvenient...
"No," Raz says gently, but firmly, as they take off their necklace and hand it to the civilian who'd asked the question, "You will finish helping everyone up here. I'll assist them on my own. That building is likely to fall under the weight of all of these well-meaning helpers... but I'll call if the situation worsens." Although he hesitates, the stranger takes the necklace and begins to lead the group back to the medical area which Raziel had described.
The Knight just hopes that the second necklace remains close enough to their body to counteract most of the area's mana drain. Now alone, they crouch next to the broken window through which the first two entered, just in time to see the girl's hair vanish down the far stairwell. So -- at least the lower level must have been intact. They call to the witches bellow: "Hello! I'm sending some light down -- please be careful, and let me know if you need anything else!" Of course Raz wasn't going down there themselves. They enjoyed living, thank you very much.
And so, tiny Ramiel, with a familiar's ability to vanish to the inner strata at any time, would float down in his witch's stead. The blue-glowing jellyfish was so small that slipped right past the gaps in the floorboards, creating a single orb of light once he was through.
In the light of Ramiel's orb, saskia burovski and @caleb can see old woman Josie struggling to stand near a cracked window. Blood was smeared across this pane, but it still offered a view into the underground tunnel which the building had landed in. Not too far away beyond the window, they see iolani kótsyfas standing in the middle of a circle of candles and some scrawled writing too difficult to read in the shadows. It looks suspiciously like some kind of ritual circle.
[break][break]But then, Iolani falls unconcious across the circle's outer edge. Three things happen at once: the candles simultaneously extinguish, the ambient mana in the area returns completely (rushing back as if a dam had been broken), and old lady Josie falls. She is not merely unconcious, though -- she is not breathing and, if either of the other witches on the first floor were to check, had no pulse. It looked like she suddenly dropped dead.
[break][break]The store, for now, does not show signs of further collapsing.

[attr="class","victoriousscroll"]For a moment, Caleb fears that he will not survive this. Caleb fears that the person in the building will not survive at all. But he knew they were still here, breathing and alive. He could smell them somewhere, feel their presence. They're just struggling to regain consciousness.
As he started to repeat the routine of lifting off beams and removing the rubble, familiar talons swooped down his hair, making him blink in surprise. Master, you scared me! The reprimanding voice of his familiar, Aria, rushed through his ears, making him perk his head up. What would've happened to you if we hadn't come sooner?! We were worried sick! It's a good thing I came with the girl!
He chuckles silently at his familiar, then turns to two figures he couldn't quite familiarize yet. But the necklace tells it all; she was the girl he had given the necklace to. Haha... good thing it was. Were the only things he could say. He then turned to his familiar. Good thing you got here sooner, Aria... but the person still hasn't been found. He states rather sadly, making Aria frown.
Just as another witch and a glowing light that came from the jellyfish went into view, a rustling noise was heard, making Caleb and Aria turn. An old woman was struggling to stand up, bruises covering her body. Caleb instantly rushed over to the woman to help her up, try to get her over nearer to the group--
Then it happens. From the window, Aria could spot a woman collapsing, and to Caleb, he sees old woman Josie suddenly fall. There was no more pulse there, no more life... he looks at the old woman helplessly, then turns his head slowly to the girl with wide eyes.
The old woman... she's... dead.
It didn't take an old fortune teller to figure that out.

the light drifts in slowly, the room gradually illuminated by a floating jellyfish familiar. or, at least she hopes it is a familiar, or it'd mean some pretty intense hallucinations. dust hangs heavy in the air, slow-moving and cloying. for a moment, she is afraid to breathe. and she still is, really, tugging her shirt collar over her nose and mouth and praying that her lungs don't seize up. but then she sees old woman josie, she sees blood; she sees a woman standing beyond cracked window panes in an underground tunnel, and she thinks whatever fears she may have pale terribly in comparison.
many things happen in quick succession. her heart lifts at the sight of the old woman, glad that she is found; then old woman josie falls, and her heart plummets. the boy gives her a look, silent and shocked, and it speaks more than she cares to hear. she wants to say something. she finds that she cannot. death is not new to saskia, not at all, yet she is shaken nonetheless. she sends up a prayer to deaf gods, fury interlaced with a simple lament for old woman josie; she didn't deserve this.
luci is the first to move, the bear bounding forward to nose the old woman's form. she's dead, echoes the bear. dwarfed by both death and the bulk of the familiar looming over her, the truth is simple and painfully clear. other events come to her only secondary and as an afterthought: the faint candlelight from beyond the window has disappeared, drowning the tunnel in darkness once more. straining, she can barely make out the faintest outline of yet another collapsed figure.
words still escape her as of yet, so pragmatism guides her feet and she forgoes speech for action. light pools in her hand, with more ease than she expects ( the realisation that the mana has been restored grants little triumph ), and she releases this slowly, in a single shot that splinters enough of the already cracked window for her to climb through.
she crouches beside iolani kótsyfas, using what residual light is left to look over both the unresponsive stranger and the circle on the ground. voice shaky, she calls back over her shoulder. "they're alive, i think."

Although Ramiel's senses were sub-par at best, the jellyfish had been close enough to the woman to witness her collapse. Unfortunately, neither Raziel nor their familiar considered themselves healers (not strong enough magically nor skilled enough otherwise), so the Knight had to resort to the next best thing: making use of the restored ambient mana to fly back to the makeshift medical area on cupid's wings. "We need a medic over here now!"
Ramiel's orb of light dims as the distance between himself and his witch grows further. It was draining to keep the jellyfish materialized so far away, but they'd try to maintain the light and also retrieve the medic if they were able. At the very least, they refused to allow this woman to die because of any fault of their own.
"If I may..." Ramiel notes to the Jester beside him, his voice far deeper than most would expect from a creature so small, "I've heard that chest compressions can restart a person's heart... in some cases." The orb of light drifts to the correct part of the chest to press down on and bobs up and down a few times to the proper beat, for the young witch's benefit. "It may be worth it to try."
Drifting upwards to glimpse through the broken window, the jellyfish calls over to Saskia: "Is your familiar able to carry them? I believe the Helios Knights would like to question them about the course of today's events."
Aside from saskia burovski, @caleb, and the muted echoes of people organizing above, the tunnels are a place of silence. The building which sunk into the ground didn't sound a single creak or crumble, and its structure held firm.
[break][break]After a time, the two begin to hear whispers as soft and subtle as a butterfly's flutter -- but from where? The darkened depths? Behind the building? Above? Below? Within (themselves)? The echoless sensation is just barely loud enough to notice, if they even notice at all. Similar but separate, the rhythmic tap of footfalls approaches. Light and swift as a leaf blade, they're just a hair louder than the whispering Voice, but growing ever-slightly louder as they tap tap tap closer from the far end of the tunnel. Someone (something?) is coming.
[break][break]Meanwhile...
[break][break]The bustle of Sundials streets has not been halted by this series of bizarre events. Witches are flitting to and fro, checking on loved ones, scanning for people to help, looking to the authorities for some sort of explanation, or merely trying to escape from the center of the scene, to return to normalcy. raziel of the autumn court is able to zip around and over the crowds, quickly making it to the medical area where they'd first been given the enchanted necklace. Though they all appear fairly busy, a woman speaks up: "I'll come. Lead the way."

[attr="class","victoriousscroll"]It was evident in the girl's face that she did not like what she saw. This old woman Josie seemed to be someone she was close to, after all, so it was no question why she would feel that way. The boy sighed silently and was about to slowly set the old woman down, but the smaller of the three -- the Knight -- told him that a chest compression could work.
Well... it was worth a try.
The Jester smiled in agreement and laid the old woman down, then started to slowly compress her chest. He had done this quite a few times before in medical missions in his old school; he should just see what he had remembered from those days. It could save a life like right now.
Aria sighed in relief and turned to the girl and the other boy, curious about what they had discovered on the other side. The woman on the other side is unconscious, that was for sure, but the bear might carry her over here like what the Knight had said. Overall there was nothing strange still going on here.
Suddenly, from inside his head, Caleb could hear faint whispers echoing repeatedly. The boy's face distorted into one of caution and he looked around. What was that just now? The whispers still hadn't left him as he turned to Saskia and the Knight. Do they hear what he hears, too?
Aria looks at her master with a worried look on her face. Master? What's wrong?
...Nothing. I just... thought I heard something.
After saying that, he continued to worry about old woman Josie and how to try to revive her.

she registers the boy's attempts to revive old woman josie only distantly, torn between giving in to that faint glimmer of hope, or the silent resignation already settling over her. alas, there is little time to mull over her feelings; there are things to be done.
"i can take them," luci answers for herself, already beginning to kneel on the ground so that saskia can haul the stranger's unconscious form onto her back. it is accomplished with some struggle, for the augmentor has never claimed any physical prowess in the least, but it is done regardless. once iolani is somewhat settled, the bear stands back up, beginning to move back towards the broken window.
then out of the sprawling darkness comes a noise. barely audible, and for a moment she thinks she is imagining it. but it persists, slowly growing louder. the tunnel supplies her imagination: her mind's eye crafts monsters out of slithering shadows, what little light there is glinting off knife-sharp fangs. her breath quickens. she backs up, presses herself against luci's side as the bear hauls herself back into the building. "i heard something."
but not before saskia releases yet another shot of light, a thin beam that shoots into the tunnel and explodes into a cluster, bouncing off the dirt walls harmlessly. perhaps it is truly her mind playing tricks on her, but whatever it may be, she would rather know than merely speculate.
The medic arrives first, barely touching the floor of the questionably-stable building as she Blinks across the second floor and down the stairs to join saskia burovski and @caleb. "Pardon me," she says to the boy, gently touching his shoulder, "I'll take it from here. Thank you for doing your best to revive her, but she'll have a better chance at the medical station." With a mere glance at the old woman's condition, the medic knew that they didn't have the luxury of time, so she wraps one arm around the unresponsive body, tugs on what appears to be (upon close inspection) a spool of slender wire, and seems to zip away at dizzying speeds along the wire, past raziel of the autumn court on her way all the way back to where she'd first been summoned.
[break][break]She was there and gone so quickly that the medic did not notice the approaching being from the tunnels.

Saskia's beam does not last nearly as long as it should. Just as its light falls upon a recognizable face (at least, recognizable to Saskia from Silvertongue events), it, as well as the creeping whispers, are nullified. Any subsequent attempts to throw a spell at the Silvertongue would similarly fail as it hits the edge of the anti-magic field she just created. [break][break] Riley's footfalls cease only momentarily. She does not know the name of this redhead, but she looks a bit like that pet project of Dmitri's... What was his name? Kasimir? She didn't know why the Silvertongue leader bothered with that one. [break][break] "What's all this?" she asks, stepping into the shadowy glow of Raziel's jellyfish and scanning over the ritual circle before staring down Saskia with a serious gaze.
