Unlike Aiden whom Claire had roped in to this 'training' without any prior notice, she asked Charani's help personally, and had actually scheduled a sort of practice session. She has worked with Charani so much more than she has worked with Aiden, needless to say she is comfortable upon reaching out to him. Why the observatory? Well, Claire just likes the atmosphere there. And so she waits by the telescope, looking at the sun kissing the horizon. Soon, the sun will lose itself, and night shall envelope the sky. The cycle will repeat, over and over, over and over again.
Tonight, the observatory is closed. They graciously let Claire conduct her experiment here, as she is known for her accountability. If they break something, her money's on it.
But she doubts they'll break something. Perhaps mirrors, or smaller things. Enchantment isn't really destructive, more of intrusive and generally sneaky and annoying. And considering she has Charani to purify the disturbed mana, she assumes it won't be much of a problem.
Besides, her magic would be weak on the this first time. Sadly, she has... neglected enhantment, and had focused on augmentation for offense and defense alike. She hated herself because of it. Enchantment allowed her to fake her strength, and now that she grown considerably stronger...
Claire shakes her head, her blue eyes darkening. Exactly why she is here. She might ask others though, and one name comes to mind...
Maddison.
But that is topic for another day. She turns around, attention at the door. 6:30 in the evening. The boy should be here any moment.

Gold on your fingertips... those fingertips upon my cheek. Just kiss me until I can't speak. That was the kind of dream he desired... the kind that came to him before it all went wrong. Is it so bad to want to hold something you love hostage? Is it bad to want this when the future was before your own eyes and it wasn't a good future. It was never a good future.
He sat in his bed, given his few hours of sleep had been more than he'd gotten most nights it was a good day. He was to meet Lady Claire today. She'd specifically asked him to help her with some training because of his purification abilities. Resistance training perhaps? Or maybe she just wanted someone there who could help rectify any problems that came with a powerful witch using powerful magic?
It was later in the day than he expected... the passage of time was strange now to him though since he seemed to sleep better during the day. There was just that warmth with the sun that seemed to help combat the nightmares. It was almost six thirty which was the point of the supposed meeting. Well he should get going. He put on one of Percy's sweaters he had and some shorts before going to where Lady Claire was supposed to be. The sun was starting to set when he opened the door to the observatory. Lady Claire was easily in sight at this point.
"Hello Lady Claire," he said in a cheerful tone. He waved at the woman as he stepped towards her. He was in comfy looking clothes obviously with a sweater that was much to big for him. Well whatever he was here for it was probably time to get started.
"Um... so what would you like me to do?" he asked, tilting his head as he placed his hands behind his back. It was a bit of a nervous habit he had sometimes. At least around this woman this was true. He and aiden emerson both admired her very much even calling her Lady Claire or Miss Claire despite no doubt her telling them not to do so on numerous occasions. They had to though.
Post by claire fermont on Apr 22, 2018 7:02:06 GMT
And, he arrives. Claire is glad he could make it, and he is just on time. Claire just stares as he approaches the empty space on the observatory. The floor is glass, and the observatory is dimly-lit while the city is beginning to struggle against the night. Lights switches on, fires are lighted as the natural source of the light disappears beneath the horizon.
Ah, there it is again. Lady Claire... it is a Lady now, not even a miss. She feels slightly self-conscious... as she's not really fitted to be called a miss, not even a lady. They are supposed to be for women who is more appropriate to the fashion brand the title brings with its name. Those women with long locks and painted face and flowing dresses. Certainly not her--brusque, bruised, and stiff.
However she does not comment on it. It seems like neither Charani nor Aiden would drop those titles. "Ah, yes, thank you for coming. I know this is a rather hasty request... Try to purify the things I would enchant in this room. No peeking..." Claire says somewhat playfully. "Just treat this as a game."
With her intentions clear, Claire would touch the telescope, engorging the whole thing with its stand with mana. Ice would envelope the telescope before it folds on in itself, the metal turning into a small compacted wood. Next, Claire would stretch her arm and point to the entrance to which Charani just came in. A line would glow on the door, and would show that the entrance has been chanted.
Satisfied with that, Claire turns his attention to Charani. "Basically, I want to know how long my enchantment could last with purification. If you could humbly try to unjinx them, please. It's been so long since I've used them..." She opens and closes her palms, before tightening it into a fist. "I'm afraid I've lost touch."

He could feel her mana as it was poured out of her body. Was this purification or divination trying to crawl inside of him? He had a hard time controlling his divination powers and they sometimes interfered with his purifications. He'd get a handle on them eventually wouldn't he? It would just take time... he'd had purification so much longer... or at least access to it for much longer.
"Okay. I can try." He was earnest about this thing. He even placed his hands over his eyes while she did her magic so as not to cheat. He was a good boy... he really was. He gave her a minute or two to do her magic before he put his hands down and it was time to work.
He poured mana into his eyes and instead of the hallmark green glow that came with his divination magic his irises shifted to a grey color almost as if the green had been sucked out of them. CLEAR SIGHT VOL 2 was very useful when it came to enchantments and given his time spent using his purification magic he was much better at this than with his divination insight.
The telescope seemed to be effected by the compact jinx. That was something he could easily correct. His eyes scanned around the room towards the door which glowed with Claire's mana. Some kind of spacial alteration... but it was hard to tell exactly what she'd put into it. Maybe a barrier or something of that caliber as it was placed on a door. That was the problem with spacial magic... it was hard to grasp intent which made purifying it a little more tricky.
"Let's try this for the telescope," he said more to himself than to her. He walked closer to the telescope and raised his hand outward charging it with his mana. PURGE was the best spell he had at his current level against enchantments. He pushed his mana against Claires in an effort to undo her enchantment. This wasn't actually that difficult given how simple this charm was. He could feel her mana melting away into the air like someone with a blow torch melting an ice sculpture.
He turned his attention to the doorway which was the more difficult of the two in his own opinion. He could try a full reset but that had no guarantee of working... or he could try mana disruption but without full knowledge of the spell it could make things explode when his mana collided with Claires. No the best bet was to try PURGE again. He waved her arms in a circular motion as he charged the mana into his hands. There was more of it this time as he essentially threw his mana at Claire's hoping he could disrupt the spacial enchantment enough that it would break.
Post by claire fermont on Apr 23, 2018 7:53:34 GMT
Claire is not close enough to Charani to actually note how his brilliant green eyes pales to grey. So she is left with the notion that purification is an eerie affinity, invisible to the naked eye, dangerous and wicked. Claire does notice that he has focused, and would continue to do so until he pinpoints the telescope and the doorway. Claire is impressed, but does not comment any further. Instead she watches closely as the boy tries to purify the compacted telescope.
The disrupted mana sizzles as purification sets in. To Claire's disappointment the jinx is easily countered, Charani's mana forcefully putting the telescope's mana back in place. She gives Charani a curt nod in acknowledging his success. Claire finds comfort in thinking that jinxes and hexes are of the simplistic enchants. Claire had just dared to hope they won't get recognized because of how little the mana was tampered.
However she had learned from Aiden that there isn't really a way to hide mana manipulation from purification. Enchanters, however, can hide behind layers and layers of mana. That seems to be the only way... and she kind of wants to try it with Charani today. His way of detecting spells seem much more advance than Aiden's, and she wants to experiment how long she can hide beneath her enchantments.
There is a hint of satisfaction as Charani tries to purify the spatial enchantment. It seems a rather blunt effort to dismantle the mana. Despite not practicing for months, this time Claire has put a considerable effort in casting said enchant. She is glad to see the purification struggling. But ultimately it shall end.
And so it does. However, not without a bang. The collision of mana explodes, though only minimally, the sound enough to reverberate through the observatory, not strong to destroy anything. The mana sizzles before it settles.
Claire looks at Charani, then. "How was it? Do you have any points of improvement for me? Anyway I can make it stronger, or hold longer?" Claire trusts Charani enough to trust him in giving this piece of advice.

It felt like a shockwave through the air. Like a ripple in the mana around them as the spacial enchantment vanished. It was much more rudimentary than he meant it to be but without knowing much about spell specifics it was hard to use an exact counter to the mana used in an enchantment. He could just try mass wiping the area but that spent a lot of power per shot.
"Personally with those simple spells I think you have two options for longevity. Quality or quantity in your approach." He tapped his finger to his chin, turning towards the girl as he thought about how best to explain his thinking. "Okay so I think that if you layer the simple enchantments it would force whoever is purifying your mana to work slower so as not to accidentally agitate the second spell and cause an explosion or the spell to activate itself. Another option is adding a signature to your enchantment spells. Maybe changing like little pieces of how the spell works so as to make its effets identical but the mechanics a little different to make it a little tougher to purify those unfamiliar with your changes. Ya know?"
The telescope enchantment was a standard enchantment which was why it had been so quick and easy for him to dismantle. If she could learn to change parts of the basic spell and make it slightly different it could in theory add seconds of longevity to it when someone was attempting to purify her mana. Seconds are something that can decide the tide of battle so easily.
"Case and point your spacial distortion which was harder to purify as I didn't really know the mechanics of the spell or what it did so I pretty much just tried to overpower its mana with my own," he said more to himself than to her. How could she change that? I mean if she poured more mana into the spell it really wouldn't have changed much... maybe just more energy expended by himself and possibly a larger explosion. He wasn't really sure how to fix that... especially with area of effect magic which tended to work more like that just overpowering all the other mana in the area.

There is something in enchantment that Claire finds fascinating. This affinity was the one she utilized ever since, and before she learned how to manipulate her own mana, she was an expert in enchantment, and she took pride in her craft. All of Charani's words sound familiar to her. She most probably knew all of this. Take note of the past tense. Quality or quantity... she used to do exactly as what Charani is saying.
Ah. How the mighty have fallen. The more she listens, the more she becomes aware of her own shortcomings.
Claire raises an eyebrow at the mention of signature. That is something new, something she hasn't thought about. "I can do that," Claire manages. Perhaps she could put on a more offensive undertone in her enchants--spells that are able to be an attack on their own. "Aiden has told me that as well, and I shall take your inputs to the heart. I suppose, if a purifying spell fails, it shall result into an collision of mana? I could use to that to my advantage."
The Knight sighs, then. "I have a lot to review," she muses. All of the scrolls she know as of now would fall under Charani's purification... too quickly to her liking. She does have on scroll that she has yet to use in battle. It's a scroll she learned while watching Zephyr Hart,. This is a scroll she is confident about.
There are three telescopes in the tower. One is the viewing telescope she has enchanted before. The other two are huge astronomical telescopes able to see stars of the farthest galaxies. Claire looks at one pointedly. She has very little idea on how the machine works... It's the perfect candidate. Claire looks at telescope pointedly. "There is one more scroll I wish to test. Come, and try to purify these. This is perhaps the scroll I know best." Claire would take the lead, and would put a palm flat onto the telescope.
Her palm glows, and slowly, the golden hue envelopes the telescope. There is whizzing and cracking as the gears turn. Claire removes her hand, satisfied, and turns to Charani, anticipating the man's reaction.

Lady Claire seemed to appreciate his advice at least. It was nice that he could pass on at least something to a woman who was so strong, smart and just. It made him feel a little spark of joy for... well it seemed like it had been forever when it hadn't been. He'd felt the same spark when he first met Aiden. He had that spark again when on a mission with Saskia. He had many that he forgot... or neglected because they were dim in the darkness.
"I think it depends on the strength difference of the witches as well... such as a fledgling trying to undo one of your spells probably wouldn't do anything very tangible versus someone closer to your power it would indeed cause a large collision and possibly explosion of mana." Of course if the roles were reversed even a simple spell of a very advanced purifier would be like blowing out a candle with a tornado. It would be like they'd just looked at the magic and it vanished.
She had another enchantment in mind. One which he wasn't sure he was familiar with until he saw what it did. Claire's palm glowing with her mana and one of the telescopes began to glow with mana. He couldn't see exactly what it was doing but he could see the mana manipulation taking effect. It was the sound of gears turning that drew his focus. Maybe some kind of activation or manipulation of purpose enchantment?
"I'll try Lady Claire," he said more to himself than to her. The boy stepped towards the enchanted telescope, whipping his arms in the air as he focused his mana. Purge probably wouldn't be strong enough given the power difference between the two so he'd just use FULL RESET on the area and use it to try to disrupt the spell by reverting the mana back. It would probably be more effective the sooner he did it since the less time that lapsed the better and less mana he'd need to use. He pulled the mana into the space between his hands, like he was holding a ball of mana before bursting it outward in waves. Hopefully this didn't explode them.
So it all boils down to the strength of the witch. She very well knows about enchantments exploding when tampered upon, and her blue eyes glinted upon such thought. Perhaps she can even use the enchantment as a gauge for a witch's strength. Enchantments are easily and smoothly broken by purifying, but it can also be destroyed by stronger attacks. Both parties can utilize such explosion, though in that case, it is up to creativity of the witch.
Claire nods at that, agreeing with Charani. "Thank you," she manages, voice gruff and sincere. "You have given me valuable insight, especially coming from a practitioner of the antithesis of enchantment." Though Claire hopes, at the very least, she can also partake knowledge to the brunette. He can definitely use it to his advantage if he knows the type of enchant and how it works.
The next spell she would use is her proudest one, inspired by her unlikely friend. She successfully enchanted the telescope, its gears whirring and its lenses beginning to clear and unclear. She has vague knowledge of how exactly such machinery work, but given that it is more of mechanical, she only need to know the very basics to make it work. Claire steps back, watching as to how Charani would make break the mana manipulation.
An odd ball of energy collects on Charani's hand, which he dissipates into a wave that would travel the whole of the observatory. The wave passed calmly over everything... except of course, the telescope.
Claire can tell it was effective at the very least, since it withstood the purifying spell for a solid thirty seconds before the gears made an odd creak. The mana Claire had manipulated is sucked out of the machine by Charani's own. The telescope freezes in the midst of it slowly training its great lenses on the sky.
The Knight manages a smirk. "That worked out better than I expected," Claire says, nodding to herself. And then, to Charani, "Well done. That spell is called Automation Charm. Once the machine or object is enchanted it would work, theoretically, to how abundant is the user's knowledge. I reckon that it's easy to dispel if the purifier knows more of the object than the enchanter. Suppose you are a knife-user, and I am a sword-wielder, and I charm your knife against you. You can easily dispel it... if you have not been stabbed the first second."

It took a solid thirty or so seconds for the mana to be drawn out of the telescope thing. That honestly wasn't terrible considering the power of his opponent. Of course in the heat of battle this would be far less effective in actual combat given how most battles can be decided in seconds but this wasn't one and that mattered. It mattered quite a bit.
The automation charm spell sounded interesting at least. He'd never heard of it before. "So its using mana to automate a mechanical object? That seems like a useful spell for things that require a large number of people to normally work..." he trailed off. So like could it be used to open gates or disarm traps that may require a certain number of people to work? Like a jigsaw type trap or something like that? Not to mention automation in factories. This could heavily increase output on the creation of items.
"Yes that is part of the problem or drawback of purification... its effectiveness wanes with the lack of knowledge of what is being dispelled. There are spells to get around that like the one I just used Full Reset but it is less powerful than what I used earlier. Think of it like... a bowl of water. It's easier to get something wet if you pour the whole bowl onto an object but you can of course just wildly throw it around everywhere so things will still get wet just not as much... or something like that. I'm not that good at explaining things."
Of course more knowledge about how something works like she said means dispelling things are easy for the caster. For example learning from a certain runescripter could make disarming more runes much more effective and easier just by learning how the spells work.
Yes, it's true. Automation charm is a series of complicated spells merged into one. It's quite useful, but truthfully though Claire would only use it as a last resort. Perhaps a way to distract to opponent while flees. She doesn't want to spend mana on something she has the slightest idea of how it works. Automation charm is a way to cheat your opponent, but it could only work in the instant it's drawn.
When Charani starts explaining on the technicalities and complications of purification, Claire starts to compare it with Automation charm. It depends on the knowledge of the caster, and the lesser the initial knowledge of the spell the harder it is for the witch to purify the spell. So she can win with wit, then, and how far is she willing to bend the spells even with the risk of it backfiring against her.
Claire nods. "Don't worry, I understand the gist of it. In the end, it all boils down to the knowledge of the witch. Fair enough." Claire used to think that she can't win against purifiers. Purification is enchantment's dreaded match. Enchantment manipulates mana while purification disables it. In theory, though. Ability-wise, it's probably true, but battle-wise?
Claire doesn't lose. Enough said. And if she should fall, she would come back up and exact revenge twice what she's received.
She can probably trick a purifier with newly-learned techniques. "Ah, but you're really a bunch of jack-of-all-trade individuals. I'm wondering if you have specializations. A illusion purifier, for example. I assume it must be rare, hence the importance of learning a second affinity."

She was correct. Everything boiled down to the power as well as knowledge of the witch combined. Someone with enough knowledge and skill could overcome a lack of power with purification and the reverse was true as well. A high amount of difference in power could compensate for a lack of knowledge on the spell that was being purified.
"Probably... though I think it depends on if or what someone's other affinity would be. I know atheneum fits well with purification because it's goal is to gather knowledge..." Of course many purification witches don't have another affinity because switching between using magic and undoing magic tended to be hard to do in the heat of battle. That was why he tended not to mix his divination spells and purification spells all to much as it took quite a bit of concentration to achieve.
"I imagine though it depends on exposure to spells and affinities. If you spend a lot of time around illusionists then you get really good at purifying illusions? Or something like that." This was true of all skills to be fair. For example enchantment had a wide array of kinds of spells to its name so whatever a witch practices and uses the most they would be the best at. It just made logical sense.
"Is there anything else you'd like to know Lady Claire? I can try to help but I can only speak to my own affinities and experience." He could really only comment on what he knew which wasn't a super duper amount in the grand scheme of things. Sure he knew his two affinities pretty well... well purification more readily than divination but still he knew them well enough. What else was Claire thinking? What desire did she have of this training session?
Claire utilizes second affinities a little differently. She rarely mix enchantment and augmentation, although they function almost the same. Enchantment manipulates mana outside of the body while augmentation tampers with the body itself. There are augmentation scrolls that tamper with properties of objects, but other than augmentation is focused on the body itself. She often uses enchantment as a subtle touch to battles--small traps to mess with the opponent's movements as she attacks head-on. She shrugs her shoulders. "I usually keep enchantment as sort of a trump card. I have a good grasp on enchantment, I just feel like I had to use it once in a while hence I forgot how to."
Charani's statement offers her something to think about. She has heard of this term before, but wonders if someone actually specializes in an affinity, without bothering to learn anything else. "Specialists would be a double-edged sword against a purifier. If the purifier doesn't know much about the affinity then it's the specialist's win. If the purifier is somehow knowledgeable about the affinity then the specialist doesn't stand a chance."
Around this time two is just exchanging questions, with neither of them actually having concrete answers. Claire glances at the clock--it's quarter to seven. She shakes her head. She would love to continue training, but time is not permitting them. "No, this is enough for the day. It's getting late and we both have work to do tomorrow."
Claire looks around, then, making sure that everything is back in place. Ah, they hadn't displaced anything, after all.
"We should probably go now," Claire says, leading the way to the long flight of stairs down.

It was all up to the witch how to use their powers. That was what made every person's magic unique... how their mana interacted and changes with their use of magic. It was kind of fun to watch... like a little magical fingerprint based on how they use their magic. He liked it. He missed it.
"There are of course other factors that play a role but yes that's the gist of it." Physical strength and stamina also played a big role. There were many factors to the tide of battle and Claire was well aware of them. She was a seasoned warrior after all there was no reason to doubt this fact. No reason at all.
"Oh. Okay Lady Claire." The other witch scanned the room... more than likely just looking to see that they didn't make a mess or break anything important. That made the most logical sense to Charani. With a quick step she was moving towards the door and out the room. Charani was quick to follow her.
They would have to go down the stairs and then probably they would leave the building. Given that Claire seemed to be done with the purifying witch at the moment he assumed this conversation was done. She wouldn't need him after this little training session. Nobody really needed him did they? At least not anymore. It was probably best he go home and sleep.
The conversation has dwindled down, and silence settled between the two. Claire is satisfied with how the meeting turned out. The two are able to exchange ideas, and even come up with new ones. Charani is especially helpful, and Claire just hopes she at least has been able to impart knowledge to the man as well.
She has thought of Charani as a stranger, but that isn't the reality now, isn't it? They've been through a lot and survived interesting feats, seemingly without any connection other than through their Crests. The Knight supposes, they are more than acquaintances now. When they reach the exit of the building Claire greets the guard and thanks him before swerving right to the charms shop right beside the observatory. She calls Charani, which should be the last time tonight.
She opens the door and she is welcomed with the sweet smell of incense. Claire points at the charms display. The shop features some interesting carvings and shape, particularly those featuring the night sky. Claire already has an abundance of these charms, but she figures out she should let Charani make a choice.
"I have something to give you," she says, turning to the fellow Knight. "My treat. I suppose you could consider this as a thank you, and an insurance. Do you remember how mana mark works?" She levels her gaze at him, sure he would understand. He has seen her hand them out during the time when the sky was streaked with red.
