this is Salem, a land filled with magic and maladies. It is a place where witches and their elemental familiars gather, a home to legend and
lore that predates time itself. Yet of all the wicked and wonderful stories the past can tell us of, the most magical are the ones yet to happen.
This is Salem - this is the start of your very own journey. Welcome to starfall
Starfall is an animaga witch roleplay set in mostly modern times. Members play as witches in a world plagued by monsters, where the only safe spots are walled cities. Starfall strives to be a character-driven roleplay with expansive lore and a highly interactive plotline. We want to allow members to
create and look back on a magical journey, and mold the site and its plot as their characters grow.

when she first heard that her family had assigned her a mentor, she assumed it would be another rich asshole that had probably already decided he was going to support the sinclairs instead of the crestwalkers in the next election based on malicious gossip alone.
when she first heard her family had assigned her a commoner for a mentor, she assumed they were mediocre at best and would probably not be able to tell her anything she hadn't heard a dozen times before, that her time with them would be short lived and terrible and she'd have to suffer through an hour of someone else kissing her ass each day until she was promoted.
when she first heard her family had assigned her a commoner ex-deliquent mentor, chanel had lost her cool. first off, it was a matter of prestiege. second, what the hell were her parents thinking? third, were they really running out of enchanters, of all things, the most common affinity?
she waited impatiently at the edges of the hall, underneath one of the beautiful arcs that led into the helios knights gardens. this was going to be one hell of a first meeting, she could feel it.
When she was briefed on the job, Claire took it without further questions. At first she was reluctant, but then she only had to hear the word 'salary' to accept. Furthermore, it would be the Crestwalkers to pay her for mentoring their heiress. Everyone knows of the Crestwalkers, and Claire knows it would be good money.
What could be so hard about mentoring? She will be teaching her first affinity, enchantment, which Claire is proud to say she at least had decent skills. She is not the most social, but then again they won't be meeting for good time and so Claire thinks her awkward social capability won't hinder her for this job.
What she failed to know is the person she would work with. She does know it would be their heiress, and that her name is Chanel, which Claire had difficulty pronouncing, to be honest, but other than that she has zero knowledge on her personality. Claire had no idea what would fall upon her as she enters the Gardens.
Claire sees her standing under the arc. She is easy in the eyes, with her long blond hair and her powdered, colored face. Claire approaches, striding with confidence in her usual getup. She starts with a simple and polite, "Sorry for the wait. I'm Claire Fermont. You must be Chanel Crestwalker?"

alas, whatever faint hope she had born in regards to the other girl quickly disappeared the second the first words flew out of her mouth. she wanted to spit in the mentor's pudgy face. "channel really," she groaned, her pale blue irises doing full cartwheels in her eyes "first of all it's chanel. you could have tried for that one."
the disappointment in her face is evident (and perhaps all she wants to do is make it so) so she nods; "if you mean chanel then yes that's me." her tone is sardonic. "ms. fermont then, pleasure to meet you." the way she puts emphasis on the word is testing in and of itself. whatever respect she could have pretended to have had already soared well past the window.
"so," she says, quick with her words and eager to change the topic, (in the hopes that maybe she can get her mind off this disgrace). "is there anything you had in mind?" she smiles, but the smile looks twisted, and the cool formality seems like a jest after she'd poked fun at claire's earlier blunder.
She is certainly beautiful. Claire has said this before. Long, luscious blond hair, thick eyelashes, carefully trimmed eyebrows, painted face, curvaceous body and slender physique. Even her voice is easy to the ears. But as expected of a wealthy young lady, she has a tendency to look down on people that isn't a part of her social class.
Except for Claire. Claire will not be looked down.
The novice chooses to ignore the sarcasm thick in her angelic voice and instead focuses on her words. "My bad," Claire apologizes, however her tone isn't really apologetic. "Chan-niel, then. Shaniel. Channel." Claire keeps repeating the name for a minute, trying to get the pronunciation right. She has not succeeded, maybe only once. Slight irritation shows in her face when she finally concedes. "Ms. Crestwalker."
Claire nods, then, upon being reminded. She goes to business as exactly she is told. "I have prepared a schedule, subject to your approval, of course. This will be discussed today, after the initial test of your skills."
The novice then gestures to the barren area in front of them. This is the only part of the Gardens that isn't green and lush. It has probably been used as impromptu training grounds. "I want to know what I'm going to work with." Claire ignores the twisted smile and steps aside. She crosses her arms, and waits for her student's display.

Chanel didn't know what to think of the other woman's apparent indifference at her own ignorance. She cringed involuntarily when the novice said "Shaniel" and then looked genuinely offended when she repeated her third rate mistake by calling her "Channel" Eventually, Chanel laughed out loud at the inabilities of her teacher, but quickly regained composure when the other woman gave up and went with her surname.
"Ms Fermont" she immediately responded, quick to take the novice up on her offer of disregarding first names entirely. Better than to suffer humiliation (though she'd argue that Claire was on the receiving end of that just as much as she was).
She blinked at the quickness of her response. Wasn't an ex-delinquent supposed to be...less...huh. What was the word she was looking for? Competent?
In her hasty judgment, Chanel almost didn't hear the dangling request of her to-be mentor. A display of her skills. Well. Unfortunately for this woman, Chanel knew nothing of enchantment. She was convinced that her affinity did not matter at all; that magic, too, had spurned her.
And so she played the coy game and stepped into the garden; Sol materializing as she did. The lizard regarded the mentor warily but quickly turned away. And, after a moment's worth of concentration, a bubble of water appeared on the ground; and then water shot up from it in the fashion of a bursting fountain. It quietened and lessened immediately after, but it was the average feat of a fledgling and nothing more.
Ah, she's laughing, Claire realizes. It's probably because of her inability to pronounce the lady's name correctly. Involuntarily blood rushes to Claire's usually pale cheeks. Her lips thins to a lin, her eyes narrow to slits and her eyebrows furrow. It's a look of mild embarrassment. It feels so foreign to Claire she does not know how to act accordingly. And so she freezes there until the next course of action.
It fades quickly as Claire explains what Chanel would be doing. The fledgling complied quite nicely, but then not really in a way Claire expects her to. She realizes it when Chanel's familiar materializes.
Affinity doesn't need the presence of familiars.
Sure enough, bubbles float and pillars of water shot up to the air. Claire raises one eyebrow. It's of an average fledgling power but still quite impressive. Claire would have applauded if only it's not a technique.
The novice regards the familiar. "Mind introducing me to your companion, Ms. Crestwalker?"
For common courtesy Claire snaps her fingers. Vani appears with a shower of ice and a loud thump. The boar attempts to roar but Claire shushes him down and gives him the look.
"I'm Vani," the boar proudly says, showing off his tusks. Quite the stuck-up. It still warms her heart whenever he hears the next sentence Vani would utter. "Hurt Claire and you will have to face me."
Claire steps forward, putting a bare hand to one of Vani's wickedly long tusks. "Your technique is quite remarkable, Ms. Crestwalker," Claire starts. "But that isn't what I want to see. Perform your affinity. It's enchantment, isn't it?"

Chanel does not know what to think of the sudden embarrassment, other than the little joy it gives her. The sight of the woman's suffering isn't, however, nearly enough to really dampen the heat of the moment that comes soon after. She knows she's not playing the game the ex-delinquent wants her to play. And it's one thing if she was doing it out of spite. But she's doing it out of inability.
Sol twiches when referred to, seven-foot tail lazing about as he turns and blinks. Chanel, however, is an expert at introductions. "His name is Sol. Not quite as easy on the eyes as your lovely boar, but I think he has his own charms." Her response is diplomatic, wary. She's willing to let Claire attempt a position over her- but alas, the older woman seems to cling to her politeness as well.
Chanel nearly scowls when she's complimented. She suddenly feels a surge of every emotion imaginable, and she presses her lips together. "Of course," is her rather steely and cool response, a stark contrast from the (feigned) friendliness of before.
She removes a wand from her sleeve- it is elegant and flexible, but clearly emphasizes style over substance. She points the wand an itte above the ground and takes a stance- the stance beginners often take when casting their first barriers and stalling scrolls.
And she launches the spell, or attempts to. Enchanters, true-born and well-learned, have a knack for commanding mana. And for a minute the mana in the air flickers as though ready to respond, seems to search for something in the air, and then does nothing.
Chanel launches the spell again. And again. And a---

"I agree, I am lovely," Vani snickers, and Claire cringes. The boar is very oblivious. Apparently it hasn't noticed the tension brewing in the air. Claire rolls her eyes heavenwards when Vani looks at her for support and approval.
The lady masks her emotions well, that much Claire will give her. Claire could feel the sudden shift of mood, even if she is busy standing her ground against Vani whining and pushing against her. Claire almost, almost raises an eyebrow at that. What could be so hard about manipulating mana and bending it to your own will? But then again, anything is possible, and the Knight might just be prejudiced to others because, well, she found it easy herself.
Chanel's lips press into a thin line before she reluctantly pulls out a wand. Even her wand is notches better than Claire's. Satisfied with the turn of events, Claire stays silent and prepares herself for the worst. Vani calms down as well, looking at the spectacle Chanel would show.
The opposite of the spectacle happens, and even the worst could not even describe the pitifulness of the blonde's situation. Claire watches Chanel struggle with a dark look, utterly unimpressed. The mana is shifting, yes, but clearly she hasn't yet to master the contents of Stalling Scroll. Claire had her eyes on that scroll for so long, but that's another story.
"You can stop now." Claire throws her something—a small wooden carving. She pulls out her own wand, the type that is brittle but works just fine. She positions herself yards away from Chanel. "Obviously, you suck at this. We have a lot of work to do. Before anything else I'm going to show you how it's done. This is Pause Scroll, different from Stalling Scroll but close enough in terms of evocation."
Claire points her wand at Chanel. "Throw that artifact to me."

"You can stop now."
Chanel doesn't hear those words, not really. In her mind, several things spin about, trying hard to settle down but failing to do so. She zones in, she sees nothing but the spell, feels nothing but the spell. She's an enchantress, she tells herself. One of the Helios Knights...
Something is thrown at her, and Chanel flinches. She yelps (and clamps her lips together quickly after) but thankfully Sol has been on high alert. His gigantic tail flicks and grabs hold of the small statue, holding it so that it hovered in front of Chanel. "Please refrain from using that tone, Ms Fermont."
Of course, the poor lady probably wasn't even using any kind of "tone." But it was a line that Chanel had learned to use against anyone to remind them that she always had the upper hand. Always. "Close enough?" she asks, one eyebrow raised.
Her posture is without a chink as she turns the object over in her palm and then tosses it upwards. Sol slams it with his tail, effectively hurling the trinket at the knight.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Claire shrugs. She is using her normal tone, her choice of words the same, and if the lady is offended at that then it's her problem, not the novice's. Claire watches as the giant lizard catches the statue with ease right before it hit Chanel.
"What a shame," Claire says, her tone mocking. "It would have hit your pretty face." Chanel holds the statue, throws it, and it comes hurtling towards Claire with a motion so swift, it's too fast for the naked eye. But it doesn't faze Claire as she raises her hand and opens her palm.
The statue stops short, hovering at least three rulers away from Claire's hand. Claire lets the enchantment stay for a minute. She moves her hand, and the artifact follows. Claire holds the enchantment in place as if she has a levitating statue in hand.
Without so much of a sound or any other sign, Claire cuts the Pause Scroll short. The artifact drops and Claire catches it easily.
"Did you watch?" Claire asks smugly. "That's Pause Scroll, one of the most basic enchantments around. It works with quick thinking and the general mastery of the scroll's contents. It should be easy."
Claire waves the artifact, side to side. "Want to give it a try?" Then a pause as Claire seems to be thinking of the next move. "Though after this, it's enough. I'd have some questions to ask you."
