this is Salem, a land filled with magic and maladies. It is a place where witches and their elemental familiars gather, a home to legend and
lore that predates time itself. Yet of all the wicked and wonderful stories the past can tell us of, the most magical are the ones yet to happen.
This is Salem - this is the start of your very own journey. Welcome to starfall
Starfall is an animaga witch roleplay set in mostly modern times. Members play as witches in a world plagued by monsters, where the only safe spots are walled cities. Starfall strives to be a character-driven roleplay with expansive lore and a highly interactive plotline. We want to allow members to
create and look back on a magical journey, and mold the site and its plot as their characters grow.
It is during the last days of the jamboree when the sky grows dark, and a giant hole forms, ripping the heavens in two. The pitch black ruptures spreads like a crack in the sky itself. [break][break] Soon monsters pour from the hole. Black shapes with dark red eyes -- monsters Salem has never seen before. Attendees and organizers scream, some running, some taking up arms to defend Salem. Even Cain Delacour, the leader of Jester's Den, leaps into action, directing witches into the sky. Many are simply swallowed up in the giant hole, disappearing into the rift. Bright flashes fill the darkness where they fight inside. Crowds of people on the ground gather and help with what they can. [break][break] fledglings and apprentices are fleeing the scene and have been advised to continue running as far away as possible in order to lessen casualties. however, despite attempts to escape, there appears to be an invisible barrier covered in ancient runes locking witches in place.
[break][break]Only time will tell what will happen to Salem--what will you do? [break][break]

Percy honestly could use a lesson in minding his own business, and he knows this. This is the third time today he's intervened in a fight on the streets between people, and he's doing his best to keep the peace. It's not always appreciated and he's tired by the time he'd starting to head home, sun warmed and sleepy. But then it happens.
This....is what Percy has been waiting for. The chance of a lifetime, something to prove his worth. He's still young, still low in rank, but the moment the sky opens up he feels it. That charge of electricity that lets him know that he's about to get into something deep. When the monsters start dropping from the sky? He grins. Some people look at him like he's crazy when he stands his ground, running away yelling and screaming. He can't help it though, can't help the way blood rushes in his ears and adrenaline kicks in. He clenches his fists, he's ready for a fight.
But he's still not used to magic, not used to the way the darkness swirls around him. It makes him nervous, unnerved, and he dives behind the nearest cover while witches around him take to the sky. He could do that as well, but wouldn't it be better to save people from the ground? Scanning the area, he decides to make his move. He runs into the fray, looking first for anyone who might need help.

Well it was just Matteo's luck that when the sky started raining monsters, he hot his face full of a black blob that had fallen from the clouds. It was a small, furry thing, but the red eyes were malicious and it looked ready to tear him apart. [break][break] So of course he used what he had available - a wrench - and promptly began to whack it, all the while screaming with slight terror and also sheer determination to get it away from him. After a couple good knocks on the head, the monster yelped and ran off, no doubt heading off to disturb someone else who didn't have a metal wrench nor a fire-breathing lizard on hand. Though Matteo could feel a slight twinge in his chest when he thought of it being killed by other more capable witches - even if it was a monster, it had been cute in a grotesque kind of way. [break][break] He wants to run, but he also doesn't. It feels cowardly, and though he does accept himself as a coward, he still wants to help out somehow. Not that there's much he can do - what does a talentless witch do in the middle of a monster invasion? Well, other than whack things with a wrench, there's really not much he can do. [break][break] But he can help others. [break][break] The idea roots itself into his thoughts. He debates it for a second before sighing, mumbling that he's an idiot, and decides to search around and see if there's anyone that needs help in getting to safety. [break][break] Tl;dr: Matteo defeats a small monster by whacking it with a wrench. He then decides to help others get to safety. [break][break] KqWP9SSl
Her breath stutters in her chest as the sky splits open, a void ripping itself into the fabric of the heavens and birthing a flood of monsters, blood-eyed and terrible and spilling out into the world in a deluge of ink. Fear twines leaden weights into her bones, her limbs, a primal terror beating out a cadence of war with the pulse of her heat. A nightmare forged into reality - this is what this is, and Ling doesn't think she's ever been this scared before.
She can't move; flashes of white and green and gold assault her eyes as witches of all covens leap into the skies to battle, her own coven leader heading the fray of the fighting; she can't move as her hands shake and her mind blanks and her world narrows down to that great gaping hole still pouring out monstrosities.
Something lands beside her. Ling screams, heart juddering against her chest as adrenaline grafts wings to her feet and strength to her veins and she attacks in blind panic with the first thing she grabs (a heavy scroll on barrier runes, the librarian is going to murder her). It screeches and she screams and there's distant ringing in her ears as she fights against a nightmare given shape, throws every scrap of physical strength she has against it in the wild instinct to stay alive and-
It shrieks one more time, defiant and grating as nails on chalkboard, and retreats; and Ling is left, chest heaving, blood racing, staring into nothing as her brain fails to comprehend what had happened. She needs to get away, she needs to run- TL;DR: Ling freaks out and manages to drive away a monster attacking her, but has retreated back into panic Mrj3h0vK
tl;dr elih doesn't like this and wants his pal to rUN
the day goes smoothly after its initial hiccups, a river stuttering in its flow over a few rocky outcrops before it continues on. ashanti is more talkative than he is used to, yet in the cacophony of the jamboree, a constant voice demanding to know more about each place they pass is almost endearing. almost; because he can feel a sore throat incoming from all the talking and explaining he is doing, straining his voice to be heard over the overwhelming background crowd. he barely finishes preemptively lamenting the loss of his voice before the sky above, already dark as though heavy with rain, splits apart; a jagged, ugly gash bisects the clouds, and spits out its abominations.
one lurches towards him -- him: frozen, staring at the sky with lips slightly parted, a hand moving instinctively towards ashanti in a vague gesture of protective intention -- and he scrambles out of its path with equal gracelessness. 'ashanti!' his eyes are wide, mildly terrified ( the lack of abject terror arising possibly due to the sheer incomprehensibility of the entire situation ). beside him, hamster materialises swiftly; the coyote has the size restriction removed, and his horse-high form has raised hackles and knife-sharp teeth.
the coyote turns to drag him backwards by the corner of his shirt. a short moment later, elih is displaced with some effort on the coyote's part: he sits astride the familiar, and despite turning to run ( hamster still snaps a warning at the nearest monster ), extends a hand towards it. pinpricks of ice shoot out, shattering with inaudible 'clinks' against the monster. if anything, it looks disgruntled by the attempt. he tries again, but this time his eyes dart to ashanti once more, 'come on! we've got to run.'
The first thing that crosses Vera's mind when she looks up at the darkening sky and at the literal rupture in it—she'd never thought the name was quite so literal, quite so frightening—is that the universe is being devoured before her eyes. Her body will turn back into the mana it came from, everything will turn back into mana, and all will be as it was always supposed to be: magic in its raw form.
Vera's desire to survive is too strong for her to so easily accept that notion, however.
Witches hop onto their brooms and up, up and away to the dangers of the rupture. Vera knows the general process of stabilizing a rupture, as she's had to do her research before letting Percy plunge into such madness. She knows she has no chances of being of even marginal help at this. This also means she's ready when the city, usually heavily charged and full to the brim with mana, starts to feel more like the countryside. It is in that moment that monsters begin to fall from the sky.
"Percy," she repeats out loud, her mind running miles as she makes the connection that, with a rupture so close by, he is sure to get himself into trouble fast. "Oh, for Merlin's sake," she exclaims in horror when one of the darkness-colored critters latches at her skirts.
Had she not been so damn worried about Percy's wellbeing, she'd probably have screeched and fell to the floor and sobbed until her familiar saved her from the tiny thing. Luckily for her, she really is extremely worried about not only Percy but the rest of her friends, and so she only needs to command her fire into a concentrated spot on the creature's face. Make it really, really hot, as hot as the reduced range allows her.
The creature goes from clinging onto her clothes to clutching at its pained snout. Vera learns that the creatures do have paws, and also snouts. Both discoveries unimportant in the face of the screams that start to erupt from all around. Cries of anguish and tripping bodies all seem to unite into a single chant: The city was surrounded by a barrier. Sporadic mentions of ancient runes accompany this chant.
Runes.
Vera stops short. There was no use in trying to rescue people if they couldn't even get away from this magical prison. And there was only one person she knew who could read ancient runes as if it was an everyday language. An impressionable brunette girl clad in red... The description isn't terribly specific, but Vera knows she has more chances of finding her near Sun Café, and that's where her feet take her.
On her way, she spots a girl completely still, save for the violent heaving of her chest, and is half-relieved, half-terrified to find that it happened to be the one she was looking for. "Ling?" she calls as her feet shorten the distance between them. A million and one questions run through her mind. "Are you okay? What happened? Did any of them attack you?"
Eventually, her mind settles on the most important of all, leaving the other questions to hang in the air unanswered: "I need your help. There's word—" her voice cracks, the reality of what's going on finally settling in. "They say there's a barrier around the city drawn up with runes. Do you think you could help identify it?"

Vera bullies a tiny monster using the Technique: Warmth, and then sets out to look for líng lù-xī, hoping she can offer some insight regarding the barrier surrounding the city.

[attr="class","jartoxpost"] The sky was dark. It was like every movie about the end of the world. Some kind of magic force was tearing open the sky... the air was stale and it felt like he was trapped. It was like being in a metal box... again. It was kind of strange though... it felt familiar... it felt safe. At least until the monsters started raining down from the sky. [break][break] People all around him were frightening. There were kids crying and parents trying to hide their innocent eyes from the red eyed monsters that were invading the space. Tons of powerful witches were flying into the sky to attack the monsters. He wasn't strong. He couldn't help much. He was to lost in his own mind at what was happening. He didn't even notice a small creature was approaching him until Teddy started growling at his side. [break][break] The canine leapt in front of his witch, the familiar being highly protective of Charani. He wasn't very proficient with magic so he'd do what he could. The flow of mana still felt unfamiliar to him. He could feel it flow into his hand as his familiar began to act. The canine ripped its teeth into the... possibly leg? of the creature as he poured his mana and concentration into the earth. He flicked his arm upwards in the direction of the creature, a baseball sized stone loosening itself from the ground below and being flung into the face of the creature. [break][break] The creature whined in pain at the assault before fleeing. It was like a ghost... or smoke maybe? Its leg somehow finding its way out of the dog's mouth much more easily than should be normal. What kind of creatures were these? The young boy's eye wondered around... he should do something. He couldn't help the strong up there... but he could at least try to find his friends and make sure everyone was okay. "Common Teddy, lets go find everyone." he said with a hum, already feeling a tiny twinge of weakness from the mana usage. If this devolved into an all out war battle he was not going to last long. He was to knew to using his powers.

Asha feels dizzy. Something about seeing the sky being torn up disorients her, making the ground feel like it's not quite where it belongs. She feels thunderstruck, legs planted to the ground and heart somewhere inside her stomach, mind blank and limbs paralyzed. [break][break] She can't even think, and it's only when someone shouts her name that she blinks into reality. Her breath is caught halfway up her throat, and her eyes are wide like violet oceans, but devoid of any emotion. Except for fear. The bear runs his snout underneath the girl, scooping her up like she weighed nothing and tossing her to his back. Asha screamed, but the scream was drowned out in an ocean of screams, and she tumbled and attempted to grasp his fur, pulling herself upright. [break][break] Polaris shot a few shards of ice into the sky but began darting in Elih's direction. He hovered uncertainly, watching his mistress from the corner of his eye. She seemed to have her eyes fixated on the rupture, but then she tore her gaze away and turned to Elih. So it is the dark skies after all. Percy dismissed the black heavens as simply clouds bearing rain. Little did he know it will be the gate to hell. The prank is long finished, and Percy was lounging in his chair feeling miserable when he heard that sound: the sound of a rupture opening. A flurry of emotions struck Percy. Fear, confusion, panic, adrenaline, but the one that stays is adrenaline. He had so much of the hormone it somehow materialized into a state of calmness. He sees he is in hell, with everyone else. Now all they need to do is survive.
He saw the whole act, and is the only one to remain by the window when the monsters started pouring out of the hole. All others had run off somewhere. Staying calm and collected, Percy steps out of the establishment and observes. People should have been able to escape the city by now, dwindling the numbers of the crowd in panic, but that does not seem to be happening. Puzzled, Percy catches the arm of a panicked man. The man, by all logical reasons, struggles against Percy's hold but Percy is not going to budge.
"Calm down," Percy says, voice strong. "Why haven't you left the city? It's dangerous here."
Apparently the man is too worked up to answer coherently. But Percy got the jist of it. Magical barriers. Percy curses in his head. At this rate, people civilians are going to get hurt.
By this time monsters that are not intercepted by the higher-ranking witches had reached the ground and had began terrorizing people. Percy sees people fall, and his eyes widened. It's probably time to leap into action.
Or... rather... Percy is a healer. His techniques are composed of healing techniques. He decides to retreat to the shadows, first, and make good use of his abilities. If someone needs healing, he would go. For now, though, he finds a bottle of water, and prepares himself from using the small amount as blades if a monster is to find him.

He's running, feet running as fast as they can take him. Matteo keeps an eye out for other monsters, landing the smaller ones that are tumbling out from that oblivion in the sky a good whack with his wrench. "Home run!" he yells, watching the small shadowy animal as it's hit back into the sky. He gives his wrench an appreciative glance - dang, it's a finer weapon than he realized. Maybe he should start up a line selling them - but no. That would be a fun idea to ponder another time. [break][break] A translucent barrier appears, a bright and shimmering thing that quickly traps several witches within. Matteo can't tell how many - he's too far away. [break][break] He spots a brunette male, huddling in the shadows. He approaches, curious, but also wondering if the male is a witch who's been paralyzed by fear. [break][break] As he nears, he can see his assumption is false - the man is too lax on his feet to be quite that scared. So instead, he flashes a grin and waves as he approaches. "Yo, need any help?" he asks, simply because - well, what else is there to do? Yell hello and ask him out to tea?[break][break] He just hopes the man is friendly. He really doesn't want to deal with horrid personalities right now, not when he should be figuring out how to get rid of the barrier. He has ideas, but he's no rune master. All he has is speculation and rumors. [break][break] Whatever the case, he should be doing something. Maybe this guy could help. they have taken no more than a dozen strides before the cries reach them; it is with a sinking feeling that elih realises: they cannot run far. hamster wheels around on his haunches and elih clutches tight to hold on ( with the realisation that coyotes are not meant for riding in the same ways that horses are ). a short laugh bubbles within him, a row of white teeth bisecting an otherwise grim visage. 'well, damn,' he declares, with the sort of calmness that threatens hysteria, 'we can't get out.' a hand raises, trembling ( and betraying the ostensible smoothness of his voice ), and gestures at a shimmering barrier not too far away.
hamster moves faster than elih thinks, bounding over to a heap of trash cans piled neatly in a corner. a powerful kick of the hind legs yields excellent results, though the smell that arises is enough for elih to gag: they tumble and roll haphazardly across the floor, thunderous in their fall ( though in the chaos that is going on, it doesn't seem quite as loud ). it is enough to trip up a stubborn creature, its legs flailing as it collides with the bins. elih flicks another spray of ice shards at it, and this time they stick up like porcupine spines on the creature's would-be snout, adding insult to injury.
'safety in numbers?' there is an odd melange of weary resignation and sheer panic ( the type that makes people do stupid, stupid things ) on his face as hamster turns to face a separate alleyway, one from which a distant crowd can be heard. he's not a hero, not a knight either. there's really no drive for him to help anyone ( and here the coyote agrees, because no one matters more than his own witch ); they aren't his friends, not really. but he knows enough, thinks he knows enough, to know that they don't deserve whatever grisly end the monsters have planned.
he begins to speak before his mind catches up to his mouth and helpfully informs him about the stupidity of the suggestion. 'if we can find a rope, string, whatever, we can trip them up from up here,' pausing momentarily, voice shaking when logic catches up, 'or a stick or pole. hit and run.'
A voice jolts her out of her numbed reverie, her name dragging her back to the present as if it were an invocation. Ling looks up to see a semi-familiar face - eyes like the new leaves of spring, framed by brown hair cut short - Vera Lindt, she recalls. "H-hi," she stutters out, the wild panic that had so stolen every bit of reason she'd possessed receding slightly in the face of company, someone she knows and recognises and is safe.
"I- I'm okay? Monsters- there are so many monsters, it's terrifying, what are we going to do?" Ling babbles, a note of hysteria discordant in her voice. Regardless of the slight stability Vera brings, her thoughts are still a chaotic mess, her heartbeat almost loud enough to drown out the cacophony of screeches and screams.
And then, Vera says barrier and runes and Ling latches onto these familiar concepts, latches onto the one thing she can always always count on, (and part of her intuitively knows that this is important, that she needs to focus and stop panicking. "Runes, I can do runes," she says, more to herself than to Vera. The trembles in her hands lessen. "Barriers, I've been researching- I know them-" Ling cuts herself off before her disjointed words work herself back into a frenzy.
"Lead the way," she tells Vera. tl;dr: Ling agrees to take a look at the runes and asks Vera to lead her to them. 4mdZIYcF

Anair had been at home in a state between deep REM and being partially awake when everything started happening. What woke him though was Blair's sudden appearance and her sharp call of his name, startling him enough that he sat straight in bed. The feline's usually silky shadow-like fur was almost standing on end, her eyes more vibrant than usual as she stood tensed and looking towards the window. "Something is happening and it isn't good. We need to move." It was only then that he noticed there was a tension in the air that made his skin crawl and there were sounds coming from outside. he raced to the window, ripping the curtains aside and letting out a choked noise when he saw what was there. A hole...there was a hole in the sky and some kind of monsters were attacking people everywhere. "Anair..." At Blair's soft voicing of his name he shook himself free of the momentary fear, looking at her and sensing her own unease before solidifying his own determination.
"Let's get out there and see what the hell is going on." Hearing his own determination steadied the feline and she let out a soft purring chuckle of agreement. The brunet didn't waste time in changing his clothes, speeding through it before grabbing things he'd need like the void ring he always kept on a chain around his neck when he went out. He was about to leave when a thought came to him and he hesitated, looking back towards a chest in his room and debating for a moment before going back and unlocking it. He looking down at the scroll book...knowing that if he ended up using it he'd be almost completely drained but after a second of deliberation he scooped it up and ran out with Blair at his side. Better to be overly prepared than risk being under prepared. His gaze fell on the large feline and he silently vowed he'd make sure she was safe, he wouldn't be able to endure if something happened to her.
There were people running and screaming everywhere, witches filled the sky just as surely as screams and roars filled the air. Chaos filled the area and he observed as people seemed to bang on some invisible wall that wouldn't let them continue escaping. His hair stood on end all over his body but he decided he couldn't deal with that right now...now when some odd monster was suddenly running at him. he rolled out of the way, just barely dodging a swipe of its claws just as Blair let out a battle cry and jumped at it. Claws and teeth bared as she landed on its face for a moment before jumping away, landing in front of him protectively. Instinctively, Anair reacted and called upon his Technique: Sticky Shadows and directing it to bind the monster. He watched only for a second as the shadows swirled to life and leaped at the monster, wrapping around it to keep it from lunging at him again.
He didn't hesitate to sweep Blair up into his arms and run, he needed to find someone else who would know what the hell was going on. He didn't know how long he'd be able to keep that up but at least binding them would give him some time instead of fighting them head on and wasting time. he didn't know what could hurt them...if they could be hurt at all. tl;dr - anair awoke to find everything in disarray and grabbed things he thinks would be useful. upon leaving home he sees that people cant get out because of a barrier before getting attacked by a monster. he uses sticky shadows to bind it before running hoping to find someone who knows whats going on. - void ring -caster's scroll volume 1, scroll 1

Each passing second seems like a lifetime today. Percy watches in the sidelines as more and more monsters land. Luckily enough for him, no monster seems to land on buildings, as he hears no crash of rubble, only of people screaming and monsters screeching. He's in between two apartment buildings for about thirty seconds now. So far, no monster has come to him. It's almost too good to be true. He grows tense as each second passes, and it took all his willpower not to jump when he hears a voice.
"Oh, hi," he breathes. "Yeah, I could use some help, although I'm not in trouble... yet. Thanks. I'm Percy, by the way. Excuse the sloppy introduction, we are quite in a pinch here, so..." Percy trails off with a sheepish smile, and instead takes note of the dark-haired guy in front of him. He's holding a wench, which reminds Percy that he had no physical weapon with him. "I should probably get something I could use, too. Most of my techniques are healing, so I'm not very offensive... this looks good enough." Percy grabs a three-foot long pipe, and tries swinging it.
"What--hey!" Percy hits something, and in one quick motion he retreats a step and faces the monster. It's a sinister small dude, and that's all Percy wants to know, really. With one mighty smack on the head and one mighty swing, Percy sends the monster skidding several feet away.
Percy hopes it's all they got to beat, however looking around, it seems the duo is cornered. Two small monsters, smaller than the others, at each opening. "Hey, mind if we stick together for a while?" Percy says, hoping his invitation is not too weird. "It gives us a better chance of survival. And we should probably go somewhere else."
The monsters did not give more time for chitchat and just plain attacks. Adrenaline courses through Percy, and oh heavens he only hopes he'll be able to execute this well.
