this is Salem, a land filled with magic and maladies. It is a place where witches and their elemental familiars gather, a home to legend and
lore that predates time itself. Yet of all the wicked and wonderful stories the past can tell us of, the most magical are the ones yet to happen.
This is Salem - this is the start of your very own journey. Welcome to starfall
Starfall is an animaga witch roleplay set in mostly modern times. Members play as witches in a world plagued by monsters, where the only safe spots are walled cities. Starfall strives to be a character-driven roleplay with expansive lore and a highly interactive plotline. We want to allow members to
create and look back on a magical journey, and mold the site and its plot as their characters grow.
Shadows appear overhead and Xuan looks up to the shape of a huge bird flying over them. His hand reach automatically for the potions in his bag but pauses as the bird continued on towards the read streak. This journey seemed to be getting more and more interesting and the corner of his lips twitch as he watches the witches over fall back down to earth.
He observes the departure of some, heading to help their 'fallen' members but does not follow, there was enough people as it is. Then another commotion happens, something about a girl in the woods with them as far as he could hear with the slivers of conversation. A little girl? Here in the woods? Xuan... Xue Mei's voice rose as she said his name and he nodded sharing her caution. A trap. I should try that sometime too...It might lure in some of those 'righteous' Helios Knights He mused and watched as another few left in aid of this mysterious girl.
Children as innocent and pure as the seem may not always be what you think they are under that sweet mask. Xuan knew and learnt that lesson long long ago with the aide of a certain redhead. A glance back and still Kasimir was still with the group left and Xuan's eyebrows rose. A temptation arose to tease Kasimir a little, wasn't he the one who is oh so perfectly good and moral? The one who despised the cruel cruel world? But, alas Xuan was not in the mood.
"I guess it's best we move on. There's people already taking care of her." He murmured, for some reason his spirits were not quite as high as it usually is, perhaps dampened by the constant paranoia that something is touching his skin.
Naomi found herself drifting towards the back of the group, gradually regretting her decision to investigate the weird streak in the sky. She should've stayed home and started drinking while the obviously better witches risked their lives or whatever. Sitting around being bored all day sounded better than getting attacked by a giant bird monster. [break][break]
Okay, none of the group were literally attacked by the thing, but it looked close enough to worry Naomi. She much preferred problems that came from the ground where things made sense. She couldn't deal with any flying assholes popping out of nowhere. The urge to run away had to be suppressed, for now. If she split off from the others, who would take care of fighting the next giant bird?[break][break]
Then again, it looked like most of them were focused on some other problem. Forest kid. Apparently, the girl didn't leave town with the group, so Naomi was supposed to ignore her. [break][break]
Trying to think about the situation any further just lead to more negativity that Naomi really didn't have time to sort out. Trap or no trap, the speed with which they decided to move on bothered her. Were they going to end up leaving her behind too? Sure, a bunch of them were members of the same shady cult, but that made it even harder to trust them. She couldn't rely on them to go out of their way to save her.[break][break]
"You would've done the same thing anyway."[break][break]
Honestly, the whole walking by as if nothing happened idea might not even work. Couldn't the forest girl just keep following them anyway? Perhaps if she was actually some monster that lured travelers into her clutches, but why would it try to mess with over a dozen witches at once? [break][break]
Either way, Naomi preferred to find out now rather than leaving the mystery unsolved until later. Someone already decided to interact with the girl, so Naomi casually watched on from a distance. She wasn't about to turn her back on a potential threat. If somebody was going to be eaten, she wanted to know right away.

in the chaos that followed the appearance of a giant monster and the conflict at the appearance of a white-haired girl, Dalton Quincey and Eleanor Afolayan were separated from the group. [break][break] the girl could almost reach out to touch the dark skinned girl, the sudden hope offered clearly lighting her face. and then there was a sudden barking and she looked away, alarmed by the frightening noise. the fortress shot up seconds after, forcing the girl to tumble backward and into the grass. it hurt. [break][break] she caught the sight of the blond perched on a broomstick that seemed to be bossing the group around and her gaze turned as intense as an eight-year-old could muster. "it's all because of-- of people like you that- the village--it!!" and she seemed to choke on her words and stand up in a fury, ignoring the help offered by the dark haired woman altogether. "i hope you get lost in the forest and die!" she cursed hysterically before storming off. the girl thundered down the path, dirtied dress bobbing up and down as she skirted across the route and then deviated from it altogether, clearly knowing where she was going. [break][break] the group had already decided to trudge on across the rightward path, and they had been only minutes into the decision when suddenly, on either side of the path, thick-petalled flowers began blooming at the speed of a thousand springs and then exploding into clouds of pollen. [break][break] the gas flooded them and surrounded them quickly- fits of coughing were bound to attack. like a disease, mana exhaustion spread over the group- filling the lungs and skin of all withces with a greater effect on fledglings. it was now impossible to discern what was in front or behind them- all they could make out where the vague silhouettes of semi-sentient venus flytraps and giant vines.

ooc notes
of several decisions, the group has made one incorrect/unfavorable choice so far. [break][break] Dalton Quincey and Eleanor Afolayan have fallen behind. they must post twice each before the start of the next round to catch up to the group. they will not catch up with the group until the beginning of the next round.[break][break]
the girl yells at the group and storms off, darting on and off the path in a rotue only she seems to know. is it too late to follow her?[break][break] before a decision can be reached, giant flowers bloom on either side of the road. huge pollen grains create a toxic gas that envelops the group, and other semi-sentient plants are rearing for an attack. [break][break] what do you do? [break][break] this round will end in 48hours. failure to post will result in moderate to severe negative consequences for the character. [break][break] goodluck! [break][break]
If anything, he felt a little out of place still. Sybil had been through so much, endured so much pain and acquired a fair amount of... Well, he had some nifty scrolls he just lacked the skills to use them which was quite pathetic. But he reminded himself, titles are just titles. He could be a fledgling for ages but still have more knowledge than a novice (which he predicted would be the case for quite some time).
At first, he didn't want to be included too much. Just help people and expect people to help him, but he just sighed and picked up his broom which wasn't too battered. The portal that opened up was quite the sight, he had never seen anything like it in fact. Hurrying, he didn't waste a second and jumped right on through.
At first, he felt nothing, just a serene weightlessness in his body before the colour returned to his sight and his feet were on solid ground. First thing he heard? Coughing, spluttering, the sound of twigs breaking under peoples stumbling feet. "What's happe-" he stopped, eyes stinging and throat itching like mad. Everywhere he looked was thick clouds of pollen, flowers blooming along the sides of the path they were on. No matter how many times he tried to talk, he couldn't, just cough and cough and cough.
There was no point in casting a spell right now, not with the sensation of his mana depleting so quickly. He'd have to rely on something else, his broom perhaps? Sybil's grip was weakening and all he could make out were more larger writhing shapes on the edges of the path. Could he even risk going back up into the air again? It seemed too hard to try and fly through all this dense woodland?
Gritting his teeth, he'd do his best to charge outwards on his broom, though sticking low to the ground. Sybil was headed towards the more clearer area with less shadows. That would be the best bet right? Anything would be better than sitting here and choking to death.
TLDR; jumps through portal, starts coughing on death pollen, kind of just stumbles around and tries to get out (and waits for the novices to help his ass)
[attr="class","intext"]Sima laughed and her mood was lifted again. Whatever it was must be a faster way back because Moosely disappeared from underneath them. She landed nicely and easily on her feet, familiarity breeding ease. She watched as the plans changed and a gate opened in front of them. She'd seen Maddox and Zephyr practice them, but she'd never actually been through one. Questions danced on the tip of her tongue, spinning dizzying circles with anxiety, but she bit them back. Sometimes, she knew, it was better to not know. It wasn't until after Julius and Sybil jumped through that she followed and she'd intended to turn to wait for Maddox, but a breath was all it took and suddenly she couldn't breathe. Breaths caught in her throat, snagged so firmly until she forced it down with a desperate large gasp only to cough it all back violently. She thought the spell went wrong at first, but through her teary eyes she could tell that it wasn't just those who'd gone through the portal, it was everyone. Dread filled her, fear, as she felt the mana slip from between her fingers like sand, but she didn't sit idly by as it disappeared. She grabbed a fistful and forced it to dance to the tune of pause scroll. She couldn't tell who was who between the thick cloud and tears in her eyes, but she could see movements of things certainly not human amd so she cast upon them, the overgrown flytraps. She'd practiced this spell a number of times, but less on living things. Maddox had been kind enough to let her try it on him a few times, but now the mana resisted her control. It pushed back against her touch and threatened to undo her work, but it stuck, it stayed, and the monster slowed and so quickly she moved onto the next. Time was against her as more and more mana slipped from her, as the coughing that raked her body threatened to finally break her focus. They hadn't come that far yet. She wasn't going to fall to her knees here.
Ah, but, some people were yelling about a girl? What was that about? Had there been someone in the forest and had she tried to warn them of this or had she led them into it? She didn't know, but now there wasn't anything she could do. Not only did she not know which way this girl went, she couldn't even tell where she herself was, really.
tl;dr: jumps through the portal and uses pause scroll (1/5) to try to slow down some monsters

that was you.
he disappears into the portal behind the small group, and when he steps back out, he knows that something has gone wrong. it rises, fills his lungs with a heavy smoke -- except it's not quite smoke, that he is used to -- and giant plants ( or what he assumes to be giant plants ) cast lurid shadows on the pollen-filled air.
part of him is more annoyed than shocked. that part, loudly, stubbornly complaining that if he is to die, it won't be because of a bunch of overgrown weeds that have no respect for personal space. "okay, now i hate the forest," he hisses, mostly to himself, feeling the mana ebb away. it is better to act now than later -- maybe he could draw their attention away.
his lungs seize; he hacks out a cough, gathers his mana nonetheless; stumbles into a run. it is not his most graceful attempt at the manoeuvre yet, but granted the visibility ( or lack thereof ) in this smog, it's not as if anyone is about to score him for his technique. moosely, he calls, almost sing-song in nature, and the familiar obliges begrudgingly.
he leaps into the air, and there's a spiral of air coiled about his legs that lifts him higher than one would expect; legs drawn tight, he spins, focuses on the reared-back head of a venus flytrap--
the air explodes before him, a sudden gale ripping through once-still air, its wrath aimed at the semi-sentient plants below. the gale's periphery skirts the edges of the pollen cloud ( he thinks, at least, because it's awfully difficult to judge when now you're basically just freefalling towards a bunch of carnivorous plants ), and, with any luck, aids somewhat in clearing the air.
the ground rushes up towards him. there are better things to than to kick a giant plant, but he does it anyway, a sudden, violent motion to catch the errant flora with all the power of stubborn determination and convenient gravity behind it. find a safe path, he bids his familiar, and prays that it is. we need to move the group.
there is an enraged bellow, a glint in dark eyes as the familiar thunders to a halt behind him. for a moment, he fears that moosely will choose this moment to ignore him, to charge the plants instead. then the moose turns on his haunches and thunders off, and maddox returns his attention to the matter at hand: namely, the gaping maw of an oversized flytrap. is this what being a fly feels like? it's not a very nice feeling.
@ the whole squad tbh
tl;dr jumps through the portal after the group. decides that plants suck, uses technique double jump and fierce gale in an attempt to divert the plants attention + clear away some pollen. sends moosely off to scout for a safer area.
[attr="class","gearcore"] Zephyr realizes a bit too late that he should have addressed the mysterious girl as well as his group. Of course he stands by his conviction that they shouldn't have been lured away from the group by pitiful-looking people in need, but if she was indeed a human and if she was willing to unhide herself from them and explain what was wrong, he would have considered the detour. How was she supposed to know that if he hadn't expressed it?
However, any ounce of regret he would have felt was easily brushed away by her harsh wishes of death upon all of them. Clearly it must have not been too severe of an emergency.
So they trudge on for a time, albeit brief before the next potential danger arises. This danger, however, is much more immediate and obvious than the last. The mechanic hastily snaps his goggles over his eyes and covers his airways with the fabric of his shirt as the cloud of pollen rushes in. Shit. Shitshitshit. The only person in their party who he knew could make large gusts of wind was Mads, and he wasn't even here right now. What was taking him so long? "We need wind," he shouts back to the group, hoping there'd be at least one other air elementalist with that kind of capability. Simultaneously, he begins dealing with the plants, lifting the ground where their roots were embedded and moving the closest ones back, away from the path.
Thankfully, one of the chains of portals hanging from the shaft of his broom quickly hums to life, preluding the missing search party which (too slowly, in his opinion) filed through. As soon as Maddox appeared, Zephyr thrust a lightweight metal container onto his person, hooking it onto the purifier's belt and jabbing a pair of wires into his skin. After the quick pricking sensation, Maddox would feel the mana within him increase, fed by the magic canister which Zephyr had just hooked up to him. "Wind," he curtly instructs, not wanting to waste any breath on more words than that before returning to moving the plants away.
Unfortunately, only after Maddox had leaped away did he consider that this could have been the purifiable work of a plantshaper, though the pollen was far too thick to see for sure.
Shit.
Meanwhile, Spock was sticking to the treetops along the edge of the pollen cloud. She assisted her human in lifting the plants away for a time, at least until Moosely reappeared. As the massive beast bellows, she leaps down from her safe perch and lands nimbly on his broad antlers, holding on tightly to prepare for the inevitable charge. As he dashes away, the monkey points (keeping her arm within his line of sight, as she remained atop his head) towards where the rude mystery child ran off to. Zephyr, true to his curious nature, wanted to know what exactly she had wanted (or what she was), but, personally, Spock wouldn't mind if she got trampled by a full-grown moose.
----------- tldr - zeph calls for air elemental ppl to make wind (lucena zamóreKorrine Lovelace) - gives maddox rothscus ✨ magic canister for increased mana - lifting the earth where the big nearby plants are rooted to move them away - spock pounces on Moosely and points towards where the mystery girl ran off to

The little girl seemed chocked up with fear and emotion when she ran away. It all happened so fast though... what could be expected. This place was dangerous... so dangerous that even the seeming image of a little girl sparked suspicion.
Pollen exploded in his face, coughing overtaking his thoughts for a moment. It tasted foul. Like if someone shoved grass in your mouth and wired it shut. Or maybe flower exploded in your face. That kind of dry throat pain and wheezing as you accidentally inhaled it. It took a moment for the effects to show their ugly head. He could feel it. His mana felt like a part of it had been locked away... drained away perhaps even? He felt weaker. This was not a good sign.
"Teddy!" he shouted as plants moved in around the group. It was like they were trying to trap them. They had to move quickly. Everything had to stop. The dog familiar bounded in front of the witch... and because of where he was standing probably a few of the fledglings as well. He could vaguely make out some witches he recognized fighting back.
The pup growled it's tiny little growl, stealing up mana to attack. Someone was threatening it and the witches around it. The dog doesn't take kindly to this kind of attack. The creature poured its mana into the ground, forcing chunks of earth to fly in various directions at the stupid plants using TECHNIQUE: EARTH SHOWER. Since they were plants it should make them much easier targets since hopefully that means they won't move very quickly. Plus it seemed the other earth boy was purposefully moving them away from the path making the targeting so much easier.
In the mean time Charani tried to keep some of the pollen and such out of his nose by riding up his shirt over his face to cover his nose and mouth. He was kind of turning his shirt into a crop top but hey it was better than nothing at least. RIght? Plus this awful feeling of damaged mana seemed to be a pain in the butt right now. Stupid sentient plants.
Summery: pup angrily throws rock shower at plants. boy puts shirt over face to block out some of the gross air and shows some tummy like a ho. don't look you perv.

moosely is, frankly, more cooperative with anyone who isn't maddox. he feels the weight of spock perches atop his head, and whirls around to follow the new direction, trumpeting his charge as he runs.
on the other side, maddox stares at the plants. considers. wonders what could have triggered an attack--
oh, right, barring the natural and increasingly occurrence of sheer bad luck, plantshapers existed.
his elbow bumps against the cannister, and belatedly -- and feeling a sudden rush of guilt as he does so -- registers what zephyr had said. clear the pollen, not test out new elemental moves on the plants.
( 'you are such an idiot, honestly.' )
nevermind that the moose is a far more strategic team player than the witch, maddox bears a startling similarity to his familiar: the ability to seriously haul ass when required.
he charges back into the fray, nearly trips over an unsuspecting witch ( has the grace to look apologetic ), raises his voice, and hopes it carries far enough. "air users--" a pause as he breaks off into a fit of coughing. there's no use of they all end up blowing pollen towards each other. "push it away from my voice."
his own fierce gale is carefully controlled ( or at least, an attempt at control ) to prevent accidentally shoving anyone off balance, drawing upon the mana that zephyr provided. but it is not sustained -- he leaves that to the other air elementalists. instead, he drops the technique barely a moment after he starts, instead focusing on the plants through the pollen, intent on resetting whatever mana may have contributed to animating these plants.

He almost feels the wind rustle sarcastically as he sighs and dives into the gate first. [break][break] He dived in and rolled onto the floor and wheezed again- completely disoriented with how up had become down and vice versa. He groaned and stood up, reaching Cass just in time for the girl to hiss and run away. Snickering, he reached a hand to pat her shoulder. "See there are some people you just can't charm, Cass." [break][break] As they walk on forward, Julius's posture is relaxed but his eyes stay on alert. The girl's death threat rang heavy in his ears and had him thinking. He had not heard all of it, but a village? Was it the same place they were supposed to be investigating? But she had run off in another direction entirely. But it wasn't like she needed to be heading back to her village. [break][break] Thinking too much meant being completely unaware of your surroundings, which was usually a risk Julius was more than willing to take. Alas, when you were in a forest where everything wanted to kill you it wasn't the best to act normal [break][break] Flowers bloom at a faster speed than Julius can react, and suddenly the miasma is filling his lungs and he's coughing wildly. Naomi decided to add a new life goal to her ever-growing bucket list: get better friends. That one kid didn't even do nothing and they already scared her off. She was the only one allowed to be paranoid and suspicious about everything. Being in a whole group of worriers sounded like an absolute nightmare. [break][break]
The first step would be to somehow survive this death march of a day. Forget the red streak. It's probably not even worth the trip. Having to deal with sudden bursts of pollen--a regular flower tended to be annoying enough on its own. These magical death blossoms just made her want to die. [break][break]
And they were certainly doing their part to help out. Naomi tried to avoid breathing in the spores, but the damned things felt like they were seeping through her skin. Her eyes started to water and then the coughing started. She gave up trying to stand and just fell on her hands and knees.
[break][break] A more talented witch might've tried to find a way out, but she gave up on being useful a decade ago. The ability to break things wouldn't clear her lungs of this filth. All she could do was wait for the end.[break][break]

Lucena could feel the weight of regret consume her body as the group moved past the strange child, the defeated cries and frustrated curses sent their way. Her breath caught at the image one shout brought and she grimaced at the truth the words held… she was no better than the adults she had dealt with when she was in a similar position. She allowed fear and the will of the group to guide her away rather than making a decision on her own accord, “Astartia, maybe we should go back to help her…” Lucena glanced to her twin sister, her voice mixed with a feeling of concern and regret. How could people ignore their own wrongs so easily?
Despite the change of heart to her previous decision, her legs continued to move her further down the path alongside the company of the group and even further away from the child in question. Lucena turned her body towards the beaten trail behind her, crimson colored eyes peering back into the dark thickets of the forest before she dared to bring her attention back to the group.
She could hardly see what lurked within the forest, the thickness of shrubs and the smog of darkness limited her vision immensely, it was far different than the forests surrounding eclipse town; almost concerning that their group was unable to see what lied within the woods that surrounded them.
Almost as if the forest was prompted, the path their group continued to trek down grew heavy with pollen while hostile creatures sprouted from the darkness with little warning. She could feel her muscles tense while her mind rushed with thought. The dazed looks of some members soon transformed into orders, she wasn't quite sure when some of the fear dispersed; air elementals were to clear out the pollen.
Silas, please, I need you… She begged, now feeling the toll of her slowly depleting mana. Without a moment's hesitation the small kestrel materialized upon the request of his witch. There wasn't much time to waste to make his presence known among the others.
“This may be no gale, but it'll do.” Silas assured, urging Lucena to use the limited techniques she knew. She breathed out a frustrated sigh, vaguely listening to the shouts of her group members, and forced her hand away from the voice. The air around her seemed to ripple for a moment, threatening to falter under her lack of control, though it was enough to create a few thin slices of sharp air. Lucena was unaware how well the attempt would disperse the pollen nor was sure if the air would have any effect on the plants surrounding them.
tl;dr: Lucena is concerned about leaving the girl behind and expresses that to Astartia. She has a momentary silent freak out when the mana consuming pollen comes into the picture, but listens to the call for air elementals and attempts to use Slices to force it away. Maybe some collateral damage to the plants?

The guilt kept rolling over Astartia in waves as the group turned their back on the girl, body growing a bit heavy with the sudden hit of sorrow and the ghost of memories she hadn’t thought of in years resurfaced for a moment. She swallowed thickly. “Yeah, I… don’t feel so right about this as I thought I did—” she replied hastily, casting an almost pleading glance to her sister, before her attention swivelled back to the girl’s evidently angered and vengeful cries. Astartia sighed, turning away again, eyes overcome with regret. “Seems a bit too late now; she’d rather have us dead, don’t know if I can blame her.” [break] They had only been walking for a short while before they were suddenly surrounded by pollen of all things— everything happened so quickly Astartia could hardly keep up. It was only moments before it got to her lungs, her hand quickly going to the collar of her shirt and lifting it over her nose to try and fight it off. She could feel the pollen not only hinder her sensory abilities, but her magical ones; she was feeling the mana being taken with great effect, and a sudden swell of panic hit her before it morphed into fierce determination. [break] She heard a call out for air elementals, but she doubted only they could help before she remembered something she’d learned from her time around the area— water could fight against pollen. “Hey!” she barked out suddenly, loud enough for people to hear even through her shirt. “Water helps against pollen, too! Whoever can use it, do your best— we have to work together now.” [break] Salacia, she commanded, and the boa suddenly appeared, wrapped protectively around Astartia’s shoulders; the witch let go of her shirt to free her hands. She didn’t have to say a word for Salacia to understand her intent, and the pair fought through the weakness to do as much as they could. [break] Various bubbles formed in the air, Astartia and Salacia working together and even trying to fill some of them with more water, sending as many upwards as they could before their creations burst, spraying the area with water more than necessarily drenching people— almost like a light drizzle, considering she was far too weak to put too much into the feat. However, she couldn’t do anything else; the effects of the mana depletion, couple with her magic, had overcome the pair too much to continue. [break] If only I was a better purifier— maybe I could fix this mana bullshit going on.

coughing big time casts bubble to try and enclose the anthers of the flowers to stop more pollen being released
[attr="class","technoscroll"]
❝
At that point, it seemed that whatever luck they had been running on was diminishing at a terrifying rate. They hadn't travelled much further down the path before a thunderous rumble shakes the trees, giant flowers sprouting from the ground and releasing pollen in the air. Hand flying up to grip onto Zephyr's shoulder as her body tilted off-course, her heart hammers in her chest at the near-fall. The pollen is quick to surround the group and she immediately begins to cough after inhalation. 'What is this?'
Evidently, they had made the wrong choice in continuing on. Maybe they should have paid more attention to the girl from before. Damn it. Is this it? Is she going to die by getting eaten by a flower?
The thought is highly...unpleasant.
Her coughs send her keeling forward as the intensities wrack her bodies. Was the pollen causing all of this? Out of breath and panting, she squints through the dust, hoping to find the cause of the air pollution. She peers at the closest flower, identifying its petals and interior anatomy. Where did pollen come from again? She should know this! Closing her eyes, her hand grips slightly tighter on Zephyr's shoulder as she tries to remember the book she had once glimpsed on flora. It was the... It was the... The anther! If only she could stop it from producing the allergen...
Oh!
She had that spell. Could she still cast it with her depleting mana? She'd never been the best at magic and she was still a fledging. Holding out her free hand, palm facing the flower, she concentrates on materialising a bubble. Within seconds, she sees a very small translucent sheen around the anther of the flower. She's encased it completely. Eyes shining with triumph, she exhales. She's done it.
There are other anthers on the one flower and she wonders if she can inhibit all of them.
She can feel the strain of her mana source within her as the pollen's influence still acts upon her, but determination keeps her hand up and she focuses on them all at once. One by one, she can feel small bubbles beginning to form around the separate anthers. Her breathing begins to falter as her mana drains further. She hears a bubble pop. Her arm falls and she huffs, exhausted at what little work she's done. Seeing only two bubbles intact, she grits her teeth. She couldn't falter here. She had to prove herself useful somehow.
The pollen he inhaled was dizzying, Xuan automatically covers his airways. It could be poison, toxins anything and Xuan could already feel mana being slowly exhausted by whatever pollen he had inhaled. Xuan!
